Extracts from Robert Fisk’s famously stupid commentary on Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, broadcast in April:

The issue really is, I think, is this a person who is seriously an enemy of the “West” or is this just another person who is popping up on our screens to say this is the latest mad lunatic, the latest fanatic, the latest terrorist whom we have to be concerned about? That is the real issue, you see.

Later, of course, Robert decided that we should be concerned:

I think these people are bad guys. OK, they are. There’s no doubt about it. They are bad guys.

Robert continued refining his “issue” theme:

You know, the issue is, are we in fact creating these creatures for ourselves to hate or are they creating themselves?

Later:

They want to create themselves and we help them create themselves. We help them do that. We help them do that.

In fact, coalition forces have helped do exactly the opposite.

    1. Please refrain from making fun of the mentally ill on your web site, Tim Blair.

And, as much as I hate speaking ill of the dead, fuck him.

      Actually, that felt pretty good.

      Scratch that bit about hating.

    1. Great news.

NOT killing this maniac the first time in 2003, when the US had the chance, may prove to be a PR coup. Bush’s anemic poll numbers may regain a blood supply, not to mention provide a welcome distraction from attention on Haditha.

So now that Al Qaeda in Iraq has become a headless chicken, it will be interesting to see whether this makes any difference to the violence in Iraq.

Just as interesting will be to see what the coalition PR machine does without an insurgent/terrorist poster boy.

    1. This all sounds like a good description of how we would think about Fisk himself if we had been smoking too much:

10pm: “The issue really is, I think, is this Fisk a person who is seriously an enemy of the “West” or is this just another person who is popping up on our screens to say this is the latest mad lunatic, the latest fanatic whom we have to be concerned about? That is the real issue, you see.”

11:30pm: “I think Fisk and the Fiskies are bad guys. OK, they are. There’s no doubt about it. They are bad guys.”

1am: “You know, the issue is, are we in fact creating these creatures for ourselves to hate or are they creating themselves?”

2:30am: “They want to create themselves and we help them create themselves. We help them do that. We help them do that.”

      3am: Vomiting.

And unlike #2, above, I mean it is truly great news, in and of itself, without qualification as to PR value, past, present and future, whether or not it leads to a reduction in violence, and however it affects or doesn’t affect George Bush’s poll numbers. Zarqawi was a bad man -before the war and during the war, and undoubtedly he would have been a bad man had he survived the war. The world is well rid of him, and I, for one, don’t give the merest damn how it plays out politically, PR-wise, or any other way. It is just retribution.

he saw no good coming from his death….

    1. Hey Addamo!

You were thrilled when the corpses of American servicemen were being publicized. This should make you delirious. This time, with joy. Judging from your posts, you already were delirious.

P.S. How’s the news from darkest Canada? The Canadians who are in Canada want to know. After that, you can tell us about the portal that connects the West bank to Iraq.

Or perhaps you could explain how the death of someone who revelled in the deliberate deaths of children and wedding guests in Jordan means nothing more than a bounce in poll numbers? Could it be that your only concern is in how it plays politically, rather than in the fate of the Iraqi people, or the right to hold a wedding in Amman Jordan without being blown to bits?

Think about what your post means to the people who have lost children because Zarqawi ordered their deaths. To them, it means that he at least will never orchestrate another atrocity. To others, it’s cause for jubilant comments.  To myself, another disagreeable but necesary task has been completed. Perhaps we’re closer to ending the fighting that is taking place in populated areas that causes casualties by its nature. To you, it means primarily that Bush might gain some sort of advantage.

How sad and pathetically small minded of you.
