In the tradition of last year’s casting out of the swampies, a superb example of counter activism from Queensland meatworkers:
Animal activists bit off more than they could chew this morning when they chained themselves to the killing area of an abattoir at Ipswich in south-east Queensland.
The 12 protesters got a fright when meatworkers took matters into their own hands and used angle grinders to cut the chains off the activists so they could get back to work.
I love this country.
Protester Angie Stephenson says it was terrifying.
“The workers, they were standing around cheering and whooping and yelling and making lewd comments so we had to call the police and tell them to get out here straight away,” she said.
They called police to protect them from people who were determined to get to work. This might be the happiest news story of the year—made even more so by the fact the protesters were attempting to disrupt something called the World Meat Congress.

shame they didn’t do that.
Why don’t they go over to the ME and protest there? Maybe there they’d get
their chainscut off their chains. If it was near Ipswich it could have been at Dinmore. Would have given the meatworkers some entertainment.
I will ask my next door neighbour when next I see him, he works at those meatworks.

There’s a major disconnect somewhere in her mind map of what constitutes appropriate behaviour.
There’s a major disconnect with more than the mind map that discerns appropriate behaviour. She has a whole lot of blank areas labled “Here Lies Terror”. I’ve never figured out how demanding that everyone else be as ignorant as you are just will make you safer, though. It must be terrible to be so afraid of the world. Amazing how so much of that terror evaporates when one grows up and acquaints oneself with reality.

What if little Angie Angst had hit the meatpacker with the chain after being cut free? Let us further assume that she didn’t fling a “warning chain” over his head first.
Could she be arrested becaise she did not “retreat” first? After all, she thought she was still in danger or she wouldn’t have called the police.
Just a simple query.

- I eat your spring lamb on the rack frequently. Don’t change a thing.
“The meat industry is responsible for the deaths of 50 billion animals each year – many of whom suffer terribly before their premature death,” Ms Stephenson said.
Now, I’m an animal lover (and an animal eater sitting as I do at the top of the chain) and I never want animals to suffer needlessly. However, Angie and her crew behave as though animals have a cognitive awareness of their mortality and quality of life and an expectation of longevity. The lamb led to slaughter probably senses something bad is about to happen, but that’s his instinct at work not psychological angst at the prospect of his “premature” death. If these ridiculous people were merely working for humane conditions for these animals, I would be right behind them. But they’re not, so I’m not.
While we’re on the topic of working people, a side note to all the Yanks passing through: On Monday, May Day, we’re supposed to boycott work, school and shopping in solidarity with our “immigrants”. So, be sure to go to work and/or school and, for God’s sake, buy something (something expensive—you can take it back on Tuesday). Oh, and go see Flight 93. I don’t have a job or school to go to, but I’ve planned a shopping spree for the morning followed by a matinee showing of the film. Then maybe my husband and I will go out to dinner. Shaping up to be a fine day.

A dead cow doesn’t present them with quite enough of a moral and engineering problem, no no. A live cow, on the roof, would keep them busy for days and days, which in turn would cut down on all the other stupid mischeif they find time for.

- Perhaps they’d like to return to a more natural form of death, like the way the big cats tear the limbs off their prey and chow down without bothering to actually kill it. Dinner is hardly going to run away sans legs.
Spike Milligan once claimed to be a vegetarian. He had a strict policy of not eating meat-eating animals.
- I must say, Nora and I actually appreciated Channel 7 Brisbane’s coverage of this story last night. Newsreader Kay McGrath’s intro was totally sarcastic and when it came to footage of Stephenson bleating about how afraid the poor girl was, the reporter noted ‘Outside, there was plenty of crying but no tears’ inferring her angst was a put-on. They must all be meat-eaters up at Mt Coot-tha.
Incidentally, it was the Churchill meatworks, Kae.

They live a bit too far away for Sunday dinner, and I solve my holiday problem by inviting them to their grandma’s. She makes enough food for an army, so they can always find something to gnosh on. Otherwise, if they come to my house, they get spaghetti. With Ragu. I love them, I do, but not enough to give up meat-eating.

- This reminds me of a story of greenies trying to stop loggers from working. A greeny climbed a tree and chained himself to it stating that he wouldn’t come down.
One of the loggers decided to help him come down by firing up his chainsaw and starting to cut down the tree.
A local copper tapped the logger on the shoulder and shook his head. When the chainsaw stopped the greeny was supposed to have nearly run down the tree. Yelling that the were all mad and savages.
Lesson to both these stories don’t mess with a bloke carrying a chainsaw or anglegrinder. If steel and timber can’t stop them a little hippy or vege isn’t going to be much of a problem.

Artist Lyrics: Arrogant Worms
Song Lyrics: Carrot Juice Is Murder
Album Lyrics:
[Buy ” ” CD]Listen up brothers and sisters, come hear my desperate tale
I speak of our friends of nature, trapped in the dirt like a jail
Vegetables live in oppresion, served on our tables each night
The killing of veggies is madness, I say we take up the fight
Salads are only for murderers, cole slaw’s a fascist regime
Don’t think that they don’t have feelings, just cuz a radish can’t
scream
CHORUS
I’ve heard the screams of the vegetables (scream scream
scream)
Watching their skins being peeled (Having their insides
revealed)
Grated and steamed with no mercy (burning off calories)
How do you think that feels (bet it hurts really bad)
Carrot Juice constitutes murder (and that’s a real crime)
Greenhouses prisons for slaves (let my vegetables grow)
It’s time to stop all this gardening (it’s as dirty as hell)
Let’s call a spade a spade (is a spade is a spade…)
I saw a man eating celery, so I beta him black and blue
If he ever touches a sprout again, I’ll bite him clean in two
I’m a political prisoner trapped in a windowless cage
Cuz I stopped the slughter of turnips by killing three men in a
rage
I told the judge when he sentenced me, this is my finest hour
I’d kill those farmers again just to save one more cauliflower
CHORUS
How low as people do we dare to stoop
Making young broccoli’s bleed in the soup
Untie your beans, uncage your tomatoes, let ptted plants free
Don’t mash that potatoe
I’ve heard the screams of the vegetables (scream scream
scream)
Watching their skins being peeled (fates in the stir fry are
sealed)
Grated and steamed with no mercy (you fat gourmet slob)
How do you think that feels (leave them out in the fields)
Carrot Juice constitutes murder (V8’s genocide)
Greenhouses prisons for slaves (yes your compost’s a grave)
It’s time to stop all this gardening (take up macram_)
Let’s call a spade a spade (is a spade is a spade…)

- I get my lamb at Costco ($13-15 for a typical rack)—pricey, yes, but no more so than a quality steak and oh so worth it. I trim the fat as close as possible, do a pepper, garlic, rosemary rub and cook it over an open flame, which gives it that wonderful crust, until it’s medium rare. My favorite accompaniments are red potatoes tossed in olive oil and garlic salt roasted on the barbie and pear salad, and, because my mother is a southerner and it’s the way I grew up, often with a little mint jelly on the side. And, of course, a robust red wine. Sublime. Okay, enough of that since it’s only 9:00am and my mouth is watering and I don’t happen to have any lamb in the freezer presently. Must buy some on Monday.
Richard—Some of us are organizing a scavenging hunt for Latino-Free Monday. The winning item is to find a California WalMart cashier who speaks English. Good luck with that. How far north do you think you’ll have to go to find one? (Everybody up here speaks English, so if you have to come this far, gimme a ring.) AP reports that rumors of a massive nation-wide sweep caused thousands of “immigrants” to stay home from work and keep their children out of school. A rep from the So Florida general contractors assoc was pissing and moaning about how 50% of the construction crews didn’t show (“This is costing millions of dollars a day, and I don’t know who is going to pay for it,” he said). 50%! I guess construction is one more of those jobs Americans just won’t do anymore.
