George W. Bush: upNew York Timesdown.

UPDATE. Other trends are also encouraging:

The Liberals and Nationals have moved within striking distance of breaking Labor’s stranglehold on state power, with Labor losing its lead in NSW and struggling in Queensland.

However:

Academic and leading election analyst Malcolm Mackerras said the defeat of Labor in NSW could hurt the Howard Government, boosting Kim Beazley’s chances against the federal Coalition in late 2007.

“I think it would be good for federal Labor if Labor in NSW was defeated,” he said. “It is a fact that Howard benefits from all the states being Labor.”

There might be something to that, although Mackerras is primarily known as a reverse indicator.

    1. Interesting graph for the New York Times.

The price for Fairfax shares has more bumps in it, but the overall trend is similar.

    1. The print media is being routed by the internet.  Newspaper circulation figures in the US are plummeting.  The NYT has had big lay-offs.  Must be Intelligent Design.

It’d be even better for the people of NSW if NSW Labor was defeated.

    1. I have mixed feelings about the difficulties Beattie is finding himself in Qld.  its ture that his cabinet are a bunch of useless bastards (except Henry Palaszczuk!) and he usually has to run the place himself, but that workload has slowly worn him down and the stuff-ups are accumulating rapidly.

OTOH, in opposition we have Queensland nationals who mostly are a bunch of unreconstructed agrarian socialists (see previous references to Barnaby Joyce on this site if you are interested) and a rump of Qld liberal party wonks, whose biggest problem is that many otherwise liberal voters won’t touch them when it comes to the crunch, because what they do not want ABOVE ALL, is a Qld National Party dominant Government.  This is Beattie’s trump card. His Government could be useless and it will still be re-elected.

    1. So the New York Times is down. One may wonder why the Old Grey Hag, with all that inherited wealth and resources, has had its stock price fall by more than 45% in two year, but the reasons are clear. Here are some.
      1. Stll reporting on the Vietnam war. Stuck on Stupid, floundering in a quagmire, it does not recognize the geographic, temporal and moral difference of the two.
      2. Supre market tabloids make up better stuff.
      3. NYT rejects “intelligent design”.
      4. It has failed to end the illegal occupation of its newsroom by Al-Queda.
5.New Yorkers have found cheaper dog house-breaking materials.
      6. Hiring Baghdad Bob to unearth the crimes of Bush has turned out to be a finacial disaster.
7 Changing his name from Putz to Pinch (or is it Pinky) has confused shareholders who all belong to the Putz family.
      8. The Grey Hag has failed to notice, because of failing eyesight, that the internet publishes “actual” news, which ordinary people prefer over fabricated news.
