The Sydney Morning Herald’s Miranda Devine:

In the wake of last week’s counter-terrorism raids, Treasurer Peter Costello declared: “We will never be an Islamic state. We will never observe sharia law … We will always be a democracy.”

Islamic extremists should leave Australia if they oppose a “secular state with a democratic system and independent courts—and equality for women”.

It seemed a reasonable, refreshingly unambiguous statement, echoing the sentiments of most Australians, Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Yet it was condemned as “unjustified, unacceptable and hatred-instigating” by the Lebanese Muslim Association.

So leave, already.

UPDATE. Powerline’s John Hinderaker applauds Costello. So does Italy’s Il Lupo di Gubbio, signing off with this Google-translated message:

Dear Dr. Costello, thanks, thanks, thanks of heart. It has illuminated me the day.

Costello’s full comments may be found here; a follow-up interview is here.

Well, well, well… this is the first time I’ve seen precisely the reaction that the French should be using with their problems; basically “…if you want to live in the 7th Century, go to Iran.  No one is stopping you…” and, as Rob pointed out… “and don’t let the door hit you in the arse on your way out.”

      “You are spreading wrong information.”
      “Tell it to the Jordanians.”

(a beat) “You are spreading wrong information.”
      “Tell it to the Jordanians.”

He seemed baffled that I was talking back to him; may have been the first time it happened in Los Angeles.

He is quoted in yesterday’s SMH as saying that “the Australian Muslim community is part of the solution, not part of the problem.”
This would make a nice caption under those photos of muslim men beating up a cameraman in the street recently.
Another caption idea: “Muslims fearful of backlash”.
Europe is reaping the whirlwind for allowing migration and assimilation policy to be hostage to political correctness for so long.
We must be adamant that we have a national identity (encompassing a degree of diversity) and a great way of life. Inherent in that is an expectation that migrants pass muster on tolerance and commitment to peaceful co-existence, and, yes, assimilation.
It is easy to spot those who are blatantly opposed to our way. They say many things which indicate arrogance and intolerance to an extreme degree. It is to be regretted that there are not more in the commentariat who will give an honest appraisal of what we are up against.

    1. Costello’s brave statement may have been prompted by political asylum Australia granted to self confessed militants during the 90s and until 2001, when immigration authorities were easily fooled y ignorance of Jihad and the ambient multiculturism. None of this on Howard’s watch.
A search of Refugee Review Tribunal records between 1993 and 2001 reveals that scores of self-confessed militants from Algeria and Egypt asked for and, in many cases, were granted political asylum after convincing authorities they were fleeing persecution, jail and torture.

Others claimed to be former members of Islamist groups, such as Algeria’s GIA (Armed Islamic Group) or Egypt’s al-Jihad before becoming disillusioned with the culture of assassination and brutality and choosing to desert. Al-Jihad (Holy War) is a secret organisation of militant Muslims. It split from the Muslim Brotherhood and is responsible for the assassination of President Anwar Sadat in 1981 and bomb attacks on tourists.

    1. Kim Stanley Robinson, in one of his novels, described Arab Muslims succinctly:

…Their thinking clashed radically with Western thought; for instance the separation of church and state was wrong to them, making it impossible for them to agree with Westerners’ on the very basis of government… And indeed these men had the dangerous look that Frank associated with machismo, the look of men who oppressed their women so cruelly that naturally the women struck back where they could, terrorizing sons who then terrorized wives who terrorized sons and so on and so on, in an endless death spiral of twisted love and sex hatred.  So that in that sense they were all madmen.

It’s just a novel, but he’s studied Islam and Arab culture extensively.  Sounds plausible to me.

    1. Its pretty obvious to those of us who have been following Islam for a while. First, immigrate to a western country. Second, commence putting pressure on the host country by constant demands for special treatment, ‘grievances’ and general refusal to adhere to the social mores and laws of the country. Then when the people and the govt. finally get sick of it and start cracking down, accuse them of ‘racism’ and ‘Islamophobia’ and pretend Muslims are the real victims, rather than the country that has been changed forever by allowing them in.

    1. It is okay to accept refugees and immigrants and provide them with shelter and jobs but these people must follow the laws of their new place and respect its culture just like they want to have their own cultures respected and they must not be allowed to change the shape of the host country.
I’m not sure I can write this and make sense but I believe that European governments and large parts of the natives there failed to distinguish between oppressed people and wanted fascist extremists who fled their native countries; the first group fled their original countries looking for a better place where they can live a real life and grant their children a chance for a better future and they do deserve to be given the opportunity to do this in a place other than their dictators-ruled countries while the latter; well, they want to take over in any place they happen to exist in and they want to impose their vision on others without the least respect for their hosts.
If things continue to move the way they’re doing now, I’m afraid Europe will wake up some day to find itself infested with extremism to a degree that could possibly surpass what we see in many of today’s Muslim countries.

    1. multiculturalism in australia was dreamed up by the labor party to attract voters

      the process goes:
1 identify target ethnic/cultural group with lots of unaligned voters
2 encourage that group to maintain its cultural difference, perhaps by forming “cultural associations”
3 provide grants for programs that foster apartness (eg teaching arabic to children born in australia, while cutting funding to volunteer groups teaching english to new migrants)& gratitude for government largesse
4 encourage funded groups to see themselves as an oppressed minority
5 manipulate funded groups to vote labor by saying the nasty racist liberals will cut funding, remove their cultural freedom & take community organisers off welfare
6 set up a department of (insert name of state here) communities to increase & promote social fragmentation by ensuring money goes to the more extreme groups, & to entrench culktural handout culture in the bureacracy – pioneered right here in braxtopia, where a raft of bureaucrats depends for its existence solely on maintaining social division

    1. Name one non islamic country where ther has been peacefull coexistence with immigrant muslim communities.
And when the Islamist to hit, they cover their tracks by featuring a host of “Islamic public relations spokesmen” who tell us it is all our fault and islam is the ROP. its the same old story evry time.experts in the art of “taqiya”, the art of fooling the enemies of Islam into a false sense of security before you hit them again.
Now the Brits who are almost fully fledged dhimmies of Islam have surpassed even their own cretinous srandards.
The imbeciles of the Labour party having thrown out the new anti terror laws against the wishes of the British public have appointed a “commitee” on how to deal with Islamic terrorism afetr the London Bombings.
The make up of the commitee to be politically correct is peppered with muslims
and yes you’ve got it – its all our fault we had it coming.
The proposed FO list of foreign extremist (surely it already exists) is confontanional and will be seenas oppresive
Anti terror measures will lead to even more radicalsation of young muslims. etc etc
Instead Brits need to combat islamophobia by including the ROP sedatives in the National curricullum.
Time to shed a few tears for the old country.

Davo -you forgot the Jemah Islamir leaders who were allowed in from Indonesia fourteen years ago. They claimed they were fleeing from religious persecution in Indonesia and were allowed in on those grounds.Proof of this was a current affairs tape (amazingly) handed to Asio by the abc,the tape being from that time. Thus when these people denied being J.I. after they were picked up a few years back, the authorities could challenge their denials. Some escaped however by heading back to Indonesia on false passports.(back to religious persecution no doubt?) One was teaching at an Australlian Islamic College and later found to be a fully fledged terrorist.

Not to mention the massive cost of coastal surveillance, customs searches and intelligence, anti terrorism police,ASIO and surveillance of public buildings, water supplies etc, airport and aircraft surveillance- not too mention the cost of multiculturism and it’s services.
All of this does NOT apply to peaceful immigrants who mix equally with Aussies and become valued citizens,no matter what nationality or religion.Their first loyalty must be to us.

The equivalent today would be letting in all of Hamas on the basis of claims they might be ‘persecuted’ by Israel. Unfortunately much of the damage is done, the horse has bolted and the obvious remedy is considered far too unsavoury for people to even discuss.

I wonder (and dread) what it will take before this perception changes.

    1. Davo, I have been feeling down about Britain. I’ve had this song going through my head the last few days:

ANTI-NOWHERE LEAGUE – (I Don’t Believe) This Is My England lyrics

Do you remember when Britannia ruled the waves?
Do you remember saying we shall not be slaves?
Do you remember those good old days?
And can you remember the strength of ‘44?
How we united to win that war
But will you remember when the Empire is no more?

No I don’t believe this is my England
No I don’t believe this is my England

      We chained down the lion
And let the world sit in
We build up our armies so destruction can begin
But will we ever learn the enemy lies within?

No I don’t believe this is my England
No I don’t believe this is my England
No I don’t believe this is my England
      Where are you now?

      She whispers…
      Divided we fall…United we stand
      United we stand

Would you like to feel the heart move back again?
Would you like to see the lion break its chain?
Or could it ever really be the same again?

No I don’t believe this is my England…
