US television networks report Abu Musab Zarqawi is dead following a bombing raid. No links yet. (Note: Zarqawi’s demise has been prematurely announced once or twice previously.)

UPDATE. Breaking news at MSNBC: “U.S. officials: Al-Qaida in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has been killed.”

UPDATE II. Reuters: “Iraq’s prime minister will announce the death of al Qaeda leader in Iraq Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, state television reported on Thursday.”

    1. He cant be dead. And even if he is dead hes only dead because hes a construct of the US anyway, which means hes misjudged not evil, unless you say he is in which case I agree. Hes a pivitol player in the insurgency, but only because the US made him out to be, so his death or non death are either pivitol or irrelivant, as the case may be ….or not be, what was the question…

    1. Heh. This prediction came true awfully quick:

      Zarqawi Scheduled for Martyrdom

June 7, 2006: The relationship between terrorist leader Abu Musab al Zarqawi and and the mainline al Qaeda leadership continues to deteriorate…

Given that Zarqawi has become a loose cannon and that his actions are handicapping Al Qaeda’s efforts, it seems reasonable to expect that an accident may befall him at some point in the near future. If handled right it can be made to look like he went out in a blaze of glory fighting American troops or that he was foully murdered. Either way, al Qaeda gets rid of a problem and gains another “martyr.”

Was his location betrayed on the order of his “higher-ups”, perhaps?

    1. Well, I don’t think Al Gore, John Kerry, and other Democrats will like this.  No sir.  They’ve been arguing that the War Against Terrorism is wrong.  That it instead should be the Law Enforcement Action Against Some Alleged Perpetrators of a Crime Who Do Not Necessarily Come From a Particular Group of Persons Because That Would Be Bigotry.

They would have preferred the New York police department carry out a five year investigation, seeking evidence that proves a crime was committed beyond a reasonable doubt.  If and when that standard could be met, then the US government—a constitutionally elected one, not one stolen through the shenanigans of the neocons—would request that the Taliban kindly, very kindly, oh please!, hand over the alleged perpetrator, maybe to a world criminal court in The Netherlands, who would put the person on trial for five years or more.  After which time, the man would take his own life out of sheer boredom, a la Milosovic.

But from my standpoint, I say wrap the remains of the man in a pig blanket and bury him in a pig pen near a synagogue in Israel.  But do it respectfully.

    1. A difficult day for the left, requiring much reshuffling of the “reality-based” community cards.

For example, Mr. Fisk can now declare he was correct before he was actually correct:
“I don’t know if al-Zarqawi is alive or exists at the moment. I don’t know if he isn’t a sort of creature invented in order to fill in the narrative gaps, so to speak.”

And Mr Ware will be pounding on doors all over Bagdad, looking for a new superstar:
“Who’s winning from this war? Who is benefiting right now? Well, the main winners so far are al-Qaeda, which is stronger than it was before the invasion. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was a nobody. Now he’s the superstar of international jihad.”

Take all the rope in Texas

      We’ll sing a victory tune

      We’ll raises up our glasses

Put a few more in the ground
Send them all to their Maker
And he’ll set them on down
You can bet, He’ll set ‘em down

Cause justice is the one thing
