The seminal event in the resurgence of polio was a fatwa issued by imams in the Islamic state of Kano, in north-western Nigeria, two years ago. Reacting angrily to the US-led intervention in Iraq, the clerics instructed Muslims to refuse polio vaccination for their children. They insisted the vaccine was part of an American plot to spread HIV in the Islamic world and render girls infertile. A ban based on this obnoxious propaganda lasted almost a year. As a result, 3.8 million children in Africa’s most populous nation were put at risk. The edict was lifted in July last year. By then Nigeria had reported 600 cases of infantile paralysis. The virus had also spread to 14 other African states, along with Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
