A note from reader Nigel S.:

I am absolutely appalled at some of the things being written by people on your blog’s comments forum. Do you, as a professional journalist, actually put your name to that forum?

I have just read the comments written about G.W. Bush meeting with families of war victims/US soldiers. It sickened me. Are these the kind of people you want to list as your supporters? The comments in the Ann Coulter board are also appalling.

UPDATE. Nigel W. writes:

On behalf on Nigels everywhere, I apologise for the behaviour of my wimpy namesake. I hate to say it, but he is such a Nigel.

I, on the other hand find the things written by people in Tim’s blog to be quite uplifting.

Nigel S. (in pre-banned NS10 guise) could also be the author of this gem of wisdom:

      “this website is f*cked”!

Sorry Nigel, way too nuanced for the stump toothed sister marrying morons found on Tim’s site.

    1. Nige old son – Why not pop over to this site. Should be more to your liking. It’s of course the well known “League for the Fifth International – fighting for the formation of a new world party of socialist revolution”. Especially as they have recently expelled the revisionist “International Tendency” faction. And I couldn’t agree more with the reasons for the expulsion –

The International Tendency, then Faction developed a ‘downturnist’ perspective that played down opportunities in the global class struggle, in order to justify a set of tasks for the League based on routinism and passivity

We’ll have no downturnists and routinismists here, thank you very much.

I emailed Tim Blair, rather than post my question or comment, because I had been banned from the site for writing ONE post of a differing view… and you all call me the sook! (or was it because I used the f-word? But similar appears elsewhere on this site?).  Well, who is the one here, having had to take several routes to get back on (that banning system is very thorough) copping all the sh%t from dozens of you thick heads?

Here is what I was appalled at:
“What we need are leaders who are cold-blooded mass-killers a la Woody Wilson, FDR, or Harry Truman; guys who aren’t afraid to lay waste to entire nations or slaughter millions of civilians if that’s what it takes to win. In short, we need a liberal butcher to run the war effort.”

If this was a joke, then yes, the joke is on me.

I have also finally been able to get back on to post a reply in the Ann Coulter section, after the banning barriers.

Ahhh, yeah.  You really show your stupidity, but anyway… I’ve been to the footy mate, played footy, and been in a pub, combined hundreds of times (almost as many times as you repeated grade 6).  Didn’t commit suicide there.  I leave that for the legal refugees our country locks up, including children, who have escaped from regimes we supposedly go to war to liberate.

If your woman still had have been in my bed when I sobered up, suicide may have been committed.

    1. Nige S, it’s all a matter of whether you consider your society to be under an existential threat from Islamic extremists. Clearly you don’t. In that case, such a comment would indeed seem outrageous and unnecessarily bloody-minded. The author of the comment, however, believes that without decisive military action, World War II style, a new World-War-II-style threat (expansionist theocratic fascist ideology) will engulf us.
These things have been debated at length on different threads that you have obviously not read. Incidentally, such arguments were not considered offensive in 1942. The question is, is this 1984 (as you and your friends believe) or 1938?

    1. Nigel, ol’ buddie, I just had to pipe in.  You’ve garnered 83 comments, 84 if you count mine.  I can see you need the attention, and those who need attention ought to get some.  Like families who have lost their irreplaceable members to this war, for instance.

My own loss is still very raw, so I didn’t comment on the Bush thread, even though my family has benefited from the president’s kindness.  He doesn’t have to do it, you see.  But being a gracious human being who understands that we are in this together, he makes the effort.  He doesn’t stand up waving his arms while he does it either.  I know some rather cynical pols who would never think of doing what he does without making sure everybody knows about it—every single time—if they managed more than a single time sans cameras and sound bites, that is.  There are many things I don’t like about the man, as you would know if you weren’t some hit-and-run yahoo, but his kindness to my sister and brother-in-law sure as hell isn’t one of them.

I hope you are feeling better soon.

I’m plumping for hyperbolic.  It’s the kind of language that should make anyone but a reflexively sooky wowser stop and think.  Wilson, FDR and Truman had the courage to make terrible decisions they knew they would have to live with till the end of their days.  That takes a kind of clear, cold-blooded, understanding of what’s at stake that wussy boys worrying about their own peace of mind and whether other folks will like them simply do not have.

    1. “I have never experienced so many assumptions being made…and so many uninformed, irrelevant replies/remarks of a personal nature…I knew you were stupid, narrow-minded and reactionary”

      That gets a 10 on the Irony-meter.

    1. OTOH, it’s rare that we see a post dedicated to a troll.  Nigel, with but a few posts and an e-mail, has joined the ranks of elite trolls such as Miranda Divide, fatfingers, and other like minded denizens of the blogosphere.  Congratulations!

It’s just not something that I’d write home to Mom about, is all.

    1. Tim, can we get “bongoman” or “a muslima” back as “duty troll”?  Not that they’re great, but I reckon Nige s/NS10 needs some more time in the minors.

    1. “he’s a computer program generating random leftoid nonsense.”

So what’s the difference between the computer program and a real live leftist then?

    1. “Never has so much attention been given to such a small brain.”
Yes, 100% correct & reasonable statement, well done.

Regardless, yes you did give an insightful argument/input at #87, thanks, my apologies for not acknowledging that.

    1. Nigel, I admire someone who admits when they’re wrong, but don’t cave thatquickly. We need a verbal stoush around here to liven things up from time to time.

    1. Thanks DD – but don’t worry, there’s plenty more here I’m not caving about.

My query with the verbal stoushing here is, when many users direct personal insults at me, why do others then complain about my language or words?  Or, accuse me of being a wimp (in more colourful terms) etc etc.

      Jaysus-H-Christ.

You are right daddy dave.  It has to be a chatter bot – or, as I postulated elsewhere, a very bored Andrea taking the piss out of all of us.  if so, I’ll put my hand up as being suckered.

On the other hand, we do know some of these trolls are remarkably unable to recognise when the piss is being taken out of them and keep coming over all sincere in wanting to ‘debate’ and ‘put arguments’ which they just know we can’t win.

I’ve never figured it out – why do they think blogs like this are substitutes for the Oxford Debating Society?

    1. Nige S wants to know why no one will answer his questions. Here’s why, Nige – BECAUSE THEY’RE FUCKING OLD!!! We are so bored of two bit trolls coming in here spouting “it’s just a war for oil!”, “but Saddam’s regime was secular!” or “Hamas is the only Palestinian body providing public services!”

So been there, done that, dude.

Consequently, when you come in here with what you think are earth-shattering observations that will blow your ideological opponents away (ie. us), you are met with resounding yawns – followed up by mockery – because your elementary leftist talking points have been thoroughly masticated and spat out by 90% of us years ago.

Under such circumstances, yeah, we do tend to play the man. Otherwise we’d get bored.

No, it’s not me. I have a full-time job and barely enough time to tend to this blog, much less make up imaginary (really lame too) trolls.

I dunno…a good troll is probably easy to create; it may be that lame trolls are the work of genius.

    1. The number one defining characteristic of trolls is it’s all about me – and Nigel got a whole thread where it really was about him.

This is troll heaven, Nige and I hope you realise that you are one lucky, lucky boy.
