* The Associated Press doesn’t know the difference between Australians and Austrians. In a related (and possibly not work-safe) post, J.F. Beck investigates curious European Union imagery.

* From Cathy Seipp’s year in review:

I discover I’m included in some lefty blog’s nominations for world’s worst blogger. By “worst” what these types really mean is “rightwing blogger that most gets under their skin.” But naturally I’m pleased to be there, even if I’m only mentioned as having a “head like a Q-tip.” (Too big? Too small? I guess it’s a reference to my hair.)

* “Fake but accurate” is kinda played out, notes Jim Treacher. Click to vote on his alternatives.

* Les Enfants Terrible is beginning a Bush nickname watch. Earlier Bush nics here.

* Hmmm. Looks like Australian authorities are just as oppressive as those Homeland Security guys who don’t investigate Mao readers. (Speaking of which, Josh Tinley writes: “When I think about my first reaction to the [Little Red Book] story, I find it absurd that, as someone who cares deeply about civil liberties, I was so excited to report on an incident in which those liberties were apparently violated.”)

    1. Damn the apparent violation of civil liberties…

    1. Help! I’m not being held in one of Rove’s torture chambers!

I like Treacher’s menu of “fake but accurate” synonyms. I also like Churchill’s euphemism for a lie: “a technological inexactitude”.

Recognizing your problem is the first step in treating your BDS.

    1. Follow the links on Becks site to see some of the most self indulgent pics you could hope to see. Betcha every one of those wankers is a art grant recipient. The one with Bush,Chirac and Queen Elizabeth is too strange to even grasp.

    1. Exactly what a shot of a female crotch adorned with the EU flag has to do with the Austrian celebration I can’t imagine.

Aw, come on JF, lighten up, it’s an attractive semi-clad female body.  Maybe some of those poor Austrian taxpayers though it was money well spent (they’re a racy lot).  One may conclude that your sense of humour, not Europe, is f***ed.

    1. slammer—it’s the same reason classical art is chock fulla them nekkid nymphs and angels.  The respectable folks are just as raunchy a pack of horndogs as the rest of us; they just have someone’s money to disguise it…

    1. “Fake but accurate” still works for me.

But I kinda like “boner fide”

    1. slammer (#6),

Now, if the photo showed a dildo adorned with a crescent jammed up the woman, that would be funny.

    1. The September section of Cathy Seipp’s year in review has the following quote from The Huffington Post’s Greg Gutfeld:

Bob Denver died. Damn. Now who is going to play Cindy Sheehan in the movie? Paul Hogan?

Is that our Paul Hogan? If so, it’s a bit harsh…

      That damned, elusive Q-tip head.

Maybe I’m just easily amused, but I’m going to be laughing over that for days.

Well, it’s obviously protesting the Austrians treatment of sheep. BTW, speaking of brieflets, there’s a new PETA chick in the ad.

And re. George Jahn: isn’t mocking der Parlament der Austria Australia a bootable offence?

    1. I have fond memories of a teacher (Canadian) who brought in Mao’s “little red book” to a year 10 high school.
Being young and mostly dumb we were all quite excited over this “forbidden fruit”.

He then proceeded to trot out some of the most lame arsed “cofucus says” crap straight from the book.
He also invited us to critique or defend any of the sayings. Poor Mao boy must have been spinning in his grave at being piss taken by a bunch of spotty faced 15 year olds.
Best social studies teacher i have ever heard of. I dont doubt if a few had expressed interest in mein kampf it would have recieved the same treatment.

    1. thefrollickingmole,

It’s sad that the country that produced Lao Tsu, produced Mao.

Sounds like you had a good teacher.  The funny thing is that we all take the rarity of good teachers for granted now that the state has ruined education.

Well, we don’t have a Paul Hogan so it must be yours.  (Unless you count the fact that we have yours, too.  There seems to be enough of him to go around.)
