Twelve Palestinians have been killed and more than 100 wounded in rolling Hamas-Fatah street battles. And now the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades want in on the action:
The al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, an armed wing of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah faction, threatened for the first time on Tuesday to kill Hamas leaders, including exiled political chief Khaled Meshaal …
“We in al-Aqsa announce, with all might and frankness, the ruling of the people in the homeland and in the diaspora, to execute the head of the sedition, Khaled Meshaal, Saeed Seyam and Youssef al-Zahar, and we will execute this ruling so those filthy people can be made an example,” the statement said.
It’s like some beautiful inversion of Blair’s Law. Meanwhile, in Iraq:
Al-Qaida in Iraq is being pushed out of its strongholds in Anbar province after three days of fighting with Iraq’s fiercely independent tribes. A number of al-Qaida fighters have been killed and captured, including Saudis and Syrians …
Where once tribal leaders in Anbar and western Iraq welcomed al-Qaida, providing them with safehouses and other logistical support, there is now open war.

This is good news, but it took Al-Qaida stomping on tribal boundaries to get the Iraqi tribal leaders (who—I am told—are shrewd but extremely territorial) to reject AQ.
Until recently, I suspect that the tribal leaders played the terrorists against the Coalition to the benefit of the tribe…..until AQ ignored the tribal boundaries, and the tribal interests suddenly and clearly included fighting AQ.
It always has been in their interests to fight Al-Qaida, if one takes the long view, and supports Western civilization, and not a Caliphate. Too bad it took AQ behaving like monsters to get tribal self-interests into the right place.

You mistakenly assume those in charge are capable of “seeing” anything other than what will either fill their bellies or empty their balls, today.
If any in positions of responsibility/authority in that culture had any competent concept of cause and effect or was capable of any functional “long view” or “big picture”, that culture wouldn’t be that culture anymore.
- heh.. brilliant. i always had a gut feeling that there was plenty of room for a bit of good ol’ “divide and conquer”.
it also points out the weaknesses of international aid perfectly – no/minimal international aid means that eventually the warring parties have to secure food/resources for their supporters and actually (*shock*) manage an economy.
the downside would be clever buggers like FARC working out that there’s good money in the black market (easily solved… legalise, tax & regulate illegal drugs).

- Seems to me to that positive use of funds and weapons to turn tribal leaders and their fighters into a well-equipped and professional anti al-Qaida militia could well be a significant turning point in Iraq.
Congrats to Maliki for encouraging a few strong tribal leaders to meet with him and convert them, at least while the cash and arms keep coming, into a pro-government force.
According to the report tribal fighters in Falluja as well as Anbar are digging them of long held strongholds.
We in al-Aqsa announce, with all might and frankness, the ruling of the people in the homeland
Could that possibly be a mistranslation of
Mike and Frank?

- Ok, so these morons took on Israel and were starting to get a beating when Hezb’Allah got shat off about them getting the limelight, so Hezb’Allah jumps in and takes on Israel; which takes the limelight seriously off Israel kicking the bejesus out of the PLO Arabs arse; so the Useless Nations jumps in and saves Hezb’Allah’s useless arse and takes the limelight off Israel; and everyone’s forgotten about the PLO Arabs. So they start killing each other.
You know, this middle eastern mindset is real easy once you get the hang of it. Kill, just kill, and you will get attention.
- The VRWC plan is working then! (You remember, get Hamas elected, close the borders, stop the free cash inflow, and force them to fight like dogs over the scraps remaining in their locked cage.)
Of course, if you are not a conspiracy theorist, you could just think of it as evolution in action.

Nah, they can reach a logical and consistent framework to incorperate this new paradigm. Repeat after me
“Its all Bush’s fault”
See its easy, even chompsky can do it.

- Hmmm.
I guess I’m a little confused – are there ANY Palestinian groups/entities/organizations/wings that are NOT armed?
Well the Rotary Club of Jenin limits itself to small arms, RPGs and mortars. Other than that, I have no idea.
I’m sure a Palestinian Shriners group would be seriously kick ass. Think about all these heavily armed nutjobs wearing fezzes riding small motorcycles in odd formations. Then again could such a thing be any stranger than the training techniques for the Palestinian police?
Hamas legislator Mushir al-Masri said al-Aqsa was “pouring oil on the fire” between the rival groups.
Oh, nonsense. The Palestinians don’t have any oil. Which is why no one really cares.
“[The tribal leaders] are pragmatic and follow their own interests,” said one western official. “When al-Qaida arrived they had lots of money. Now they don’t, and it is the government that is throwing lots of money at cities such as Ramadi. Also the al-Qaida types tend to come in with the ideology of killing everyone, which does not fit in with the way that tribal types think about fighting. In short, they are pissed off.”
Presumably the “tribal types” are more selective killers. One of the things that’s endlessly fascinating to me about the Arab/Muslim mindset/culture is that money can solve any problem, satisify any insult, right any wrong. Which, I guess, is to our advantage.

- ”…so they’ve opted for less risky forms of participation in the anti-war effort, such as photo-shopping, blog rants and voting the Democrat ticket.”
The United States has fought five major wars since the Republican Party came into existence, the Democrats started one of those wars (our Civil War), and got us into the other four (two world wars, Korea and Vietnam).
Naturally, the anti-war left loons vote for the Democrats.
Makes about as much sense as any other thing left loons do.

- One of my worthless annual predictions on my blog for 2006 was:
The Palestinians devolve to what will be, in effect, a civil war.
Close…and with three months yet to go. WooHoo!

Where would the anti-war movement be without a war?
Seriously—between the fall of the Berlin Wall and 9/11, they weren’t heard from much, excepting the Gulf War. Their objection then, from what I recall, was that the US wanted to do something about an invasion and looting of a country.
(They’re not really anti-war, of course.)

- OT but related, Prophet not perfect, says Islamic scholar:
A LEADING adviser on Islam, Ameer Ali, has attacked Muslims who “blindly” follow their faith and fail to question the veracity of the Koran, saying that even Mohammed had “flaws”.
The chairman of John Howard’s Muslim advisory board yesterday warned that Islamists would continue to breed jihadis unless the Koran was “reinterpreted” for today’s society.
Dr. Ali seems to be the real deal (although not perfect by any means–Dr Ali called for Hezbollah to be removed from the Government’s terror organisations list two months ago, saying they were freedom fighters defending their country against Israeli invasion–but then who among us is) and his appointment a tribute to John Howard’s excellent judgement. Wonder how the vaunted Muslim street will react to his remarks.

Certainly, dead Democrats can’t do as much harm as living ones.

‘Police fired 110 shots at Angilo Freeland, 27, the target of a massive manhunt in central Florida following the shooting death of Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Williams Thursday.’
‘“That’s all the bullets we had, or we would have shot him more,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told the Orlando Sentinel newspaper.’
If only our national government had the same attitude towards Palestinian terror groups (groups that have murdered gobs of Americans over the years) that these guys in Florida have towards cop-killers, there wouldn’t be any Palestinian terrorists left.

- Hey guys. Peace be upon you all.
I live within earshot of Gaza. One of our little games is to sit on the balcony on a quite Friday evening, listening to the BOOM BOOM BOOM, and taking little bets on how many that one got. I confess to a small feeling of guilt until now, because maybe one of our guys was on the wrong end of the delivery system.
Now. Fucking hell. Give it stick! The more the merrier. Let each rat-a-tat turn into another dead rat. Put the bodycount into a cruise missile and send it on its way! Only 10 dead? Always knew the buggers couldn’t hit a barn from the inside. There’s millions of them packed in there. There’s millions of rounds of Kalashnikov bullets. A perfect match!

They usually do that whilst hiding under their beds from their latest home invader.

Well, for one the Christians. So they are increasingly persecuted and marginalised in the PA, and their holiest churches are used as sanctuaries for Moslem terrorists.
There are even some Christians on the PA legislature, but do they ever publicly protest?? Don’t be silly, it’s all Israel’s fault..
And where is the leftist indignation about Palestinians using targeted killings -which ‘will only produce more terrorists’

- #29 Art, maybe something like this?
“We the People’s Front of Judea, brackets, officials, end brackets, do hereby convey our sincere fraternal and sisterly greetings to you, Abbas, on this, the occasion of your martyrdom.”
“Your death will stand as a landmark in the continuing struggle to liberate the parent land from the hands of the Zionist imperialist aggressors, excluding those concerned with drainage, medicine, roads, housing, education, viniculture and any other Zionists contributing to the welfare of Bedouin of both sexes and hermaphrodites.
Signed, on behalf of the P. F. J. , etc.
And I’d just like to add, on a personal note, my own admiration, for what you’re doing for us, Abbas, on what must be, after all, for you a very difficult time.”

Well, of course. When Europeans engage in their periodic outbursts of mass killing (whether in their wars, or in mass purges carried out by Communists, Nazis, et al) they leave stacks of bodies numbering in the tens of millions.
They’re hardly likely to be impressed by the feeble attempts of Americans to match the famed European ability to slaughter folks.
We Americans are rank amateurs compared to expert killers like the Euros.
