The Sydney Morning Herald’s Margo Kingston, who last year declared that “the fundamentalist Zionist lobby controls politics and the media in the US and Australia?, concludes her latest online column with a cheery:

Heil Howard.

Kingston is deeply troubled.

    1. “AGAIN Howard has defied public opinion in the one area where majority public support is absolutely neccessary in a democracy – asking our troops to give their lives to defend Australia.”

THIS is the one issue? So, on every other issue, like, say, education, health care, taxation, jobs, housing, law enforcement, she thinks the government can just steamroll the people, but people choosing of their own volition to enlist in military service require public approval to do their jobs?

Is there any facet of a person’s life that Kingston *doesn’t* believe should be subject to outside scrutiny?

    1. When I was teaching a university class a few years ago, I had a student come out with that Zionism controls America bollocks.  He seemed to think that ‘the Jews’ dictated the US economy, until I asked him what religion Henry Ford was.

    1. Look at the bright side. She spelled Heil correctly. That’s a step forward for Margo.

    1. It’s hard to believe a major newspaper has a columnist who’d use “Heil” when referring to anyone. Such demagoguery shows a lack of ideas and poor writing skills. Plus she’s looneytunes.

The left should be given free range because they’re “defending democracy”.

    1. She belongs in the same category with the nutty professor (Prof of English) who believes his teachings have failed because John Howard was re-elected.
Early this A.M. on R.N. your ABC Critterndon interviewed an academic about casualties in Iraq. The Lancet was dusted off and wheeled out again to support the presenters theories (and his guest) that the coalition of the willing lied about the extent of Iraqi deaths and also the number of American deaths etc.Bit like the plastic turkey ….OK Andrea have I avoided making any innocent cry? Thanks for the tip.

    1. Margo needs an “intervention.”

All seriousness aside, has anyone ever seen Margo Kingston and Joe Vialls together?

    1. I don’t think she means anything cognitive by it.  It’s a cry of frustration.

Incidentally, is “Heil’’ an imperative in German?  I have the feeling the thing is misheard in English.  It’s something like health or welfare being wished, but my pocket Collins is too small and old to verify this.

    1. Well Margo at least you can vent your frustration by pelting them with eggs when they return from their tour of duty, as was done by your ideological ancestors to the returning Aussie troops from Vietnam.
That should make you popular amongst your left wing mates!
And I almost forgot those Aussie helpers in Aceh. surely they are inciting those poor Jihadists to violence by their very presence and deserve the odd omelette too.

    1. 11.

      It’s a noun. From my 1061-page 1965 Wildhagen:

In salutations: “cheers or hurra for”; poetic “hail to.”

    1. Just in case you thought St Margo was a peacenik;

Your comments make me wonder what your position would have been in World War II. War is war. Take the position that war is bad and that effectively means you cannot wage war outside your home country, regardless of the circumstances.

I would also argue that your position would preclude you from waging war within the country itself. War, after all, is bad and bloody. Compromise is the answer, even if it means on bent knees.

Margo: Rubbish. I wrote before the war that I would support an invasion with UN sanction. Nothing I wrote in the piece you’re commenting on justifies the conclusion that I am a pacifist.

Margo isnt necessarily against the war in Iraq she is just contrarian by nature (and thats putting it mildly).

If we hadnt gone to Iraq she would be lambasting the PM for being Howard the Coward

    1. I left a comment on that post yesterday. Interestingly, Margot has to personally approve comments.

Isn’t that rather hypocritical for someone who whinges about corporate media all the time?

    1. I actually think this is quite serious. The word “Heil” in this context is meant to refer to Howard being a Nazi. I am concerned that if the word is used often outside its original context, it will lose its effect as a reminder of what Nazism actually was.

Is Howard a Nazi? Not by any stretch of the imagination, however, to continually call him and others, Nazis, only serves to diminish our sense of reality and in turn, demean the real suffering that others have experienced.

      Shame Margo, shame!

    1. Nic I totally agreed but remember these idiots used the 1000’s who’ve died in 9/11, bali, spain, beslan and others as political footballs. Do you think they really care about the millions hitler killed?

    1. Here’s an interesting comment by someone called Chris Masters in Margo’s blog.

    1. Nic,

You’re absolutely correct. John Howard is without doubt the most vilified PM in Australian history. He has been called a lot of names through his long career and I am sure he can cope with the latest Margo outrage. The people who should feel most slighted by this type of rhetoric are the victims of real Nazism. Labels can become de-stigmatised through frequent misuse. More troubling is that these comments come from the same person who has bemoaned “the fundamentalist Zionist lobby control(ing) politics and the media in the US and Australia?.  Now, I don’t believe for one moment that Margo is an anti-Semite (as distinct from a fool), but this type of rhetoric does provide comfort and credence to radical Islamists and the far right who wish to perpetuate the worlds oldest hatred. Since 9/11, it is also rhetoric you will find mostly from the so-called “liberal? left.

    1. ” ..to continually call him and others, Nazis, only serves to diminish our sense of reality and in turn, demean the real suffering that others have experienced.”

I agree. It’s happened with other terms also like racist and fascist. They have been so overused and misused by (mainly) the Left they have lost the ability to convey much of anything. They’re becoming just ordinary epithets.

I’m so used to seeing BushHitler, and all the other Nazi symbols and phrases used against Bush and the US, that I barely pay attention any longer.

    1. There is an old law on the internet that roughly goes “The first to invoke the Nazi’s in a debate looses the debate.”

Basically if you are in a debate and you label the otherside Nazis/Hitler/etc you have run out of logical arguments and have decended into personal abuse/dummy spits/etc.
