Webdiary’s Hamish Alcorn abandons Webdiary:
I’ve been painted reflexively as “gone to the other side” because I dare to break solidarity with the peaceniks in my analysis. I do give up. Webdiary can fuck off. My despair is complete. The bottle, death, I don’t give a fuck. Islamofascism is a real political threat to the World, the Neocons have no answers except war and stupid bluster, and the Left are as blinded by their own propaganda as they were in the 50s. Nuance is dead. Independent thought is dead. My spirit is dead. I have no place here.
This followed an earlier moment of clarity:
At the moment I see people supporting their enemies – literally at times the very forces who would liquidate those with our values.
Well said.
(Via Leigh Cartwright)
- We have got plenty of stuff going in addition to defensive military action. Ever heard of the program of freedom, the rule of law and all those good things that make the western democracies the most admirable societies that ever existed? Sure, we have got leftwing moonbats and authoritarian conservatives, but get on with it….
Neocons have no answers except war and stupid bluster, and the Left are as blinded by their own propaganda as they were in the 50s.
It’s that attitude on the Left that many of us in the US have been complaining about for a long time. Perhaps the “neo-cons” don’t have all the answers, but when the other side doesn’t even understand the question it’s hard to take anything they say seriously. If the Left were actually to propose real solutions to real problems the whole world might be better off. The give and take between the sides might lead to the synthesis of even better answers. But when the other side doesn’t even know there’s a problem what does that leave?
- The problem with Iraq is that we tried to neutralise the threat (and did this quite effectively) AND give them something better…
What we didn’t understand, and most sensible people probably wouldn’t, is that these clowns didn’t want something better (like peace, freedom, progress, construction, etc). Instead they just wanted to drag the whole edifice down on top of themselves in the process of settling old scores, and creating new ones…
Perhaps in the future we should spend our military’s lives, and our nations treasure, just neutralising the threat, and what’s left of our opponents can just go to hell… They raise their heads and cause anymore trouble, they’ll get it 10 times harder next time!!!
If that is the only language some groups and nations understand, so be it….
- And here’s one person’s “practical” proposals for dealing with Iran:
1. Listen to the Iranians – the people, especially the young people, not the hardline rulers.
2. Provide a platform for women to play their part in creating the solutions, especially the educated, conscious women who are agitating for their rights within Iran.
3. Try respect, even in the face of the most mad utterances from Mahmoud Ahmedinejad and others, in order to create room for more perceptive communication between the people of Iran and people like us.
4. Move the moral goalposts, or in other words start improving our moral position by showing some political maturity and moving further down the non-proliferation/disarmament path ourselves.
What do ‘Diarists think of these proposals? Are there other, better possible means to deal with the issue?
I find it hard to even call them proposals. They’re more like daydreams and fantasies. How does he propose that they’ll work and/or make any difference?
1. What power do they have exactly?
2. How will you provide them that power in a country like Iran? That wouldn’t be interfering in another country’s sovereignty, would it?
3. Yeah, let’s just try it. Whatever that means.
4. Chamberlain tried a variation of that approach. And others advocated it against the Soviet Union. It didn’t really work out in either case. I don’t think human nature has changed too much over the last 70 years.
- Its kind of funny to imagine a collective like webdairy tying themselves in knots defending the regime that does the following.
A: Executes raped or “loose” women.
B: Kills gays.
C: Carries out capital punishment.
D: Regularly threatens to wipe out another race.
E: Tortures and imprisons arbitrarily.
F: Seeks nuclear weapons.
G: Manipulates oil supply to create price spikes. (like those eeevill corporations are supposed to)
H: Actively funds terrorist organizations around the globe.
I: Is a mysoginistic theocracy.Anyone want to help me out with a few more?

- So Hamish breaks ranks with the “peaceniks”, he admits that “Islamofascism is a real political threat to the World”, yet opposes the Neocon answer of counterattack.
Give us your solution Hamish – don’t waffle about ‘nuance’ and ‘independant thought’, be specific, how will you stop the Islamofascists killing us and what would you do to free those already in their clutches?
Either lay out your plan or join those who already have one.

Give us another alternative. Eh, but these jokers don’t understand: war isn’t about good and bad choices, it’s about bad and worse.
Always take bad over worse.
Exactly!
AND this…
Islamofascism is a real political threat to the World
Political threat?
Hmmmm, somehow, I guess I have this thing all wrong. Silly me.
I’ve mistaken….hacking off heads, blowing up trains, planes and automobiles, knocking buildings down with before mentioned planes and automobiles, the stoning and killing women for crimes against a book, with NO value, stating that world domination by force, killing or subjugating ALL infidels based on that book with NO value, by any means possible, is our goal….as acts hostile intent AND acts of war.
I stand corrected…politics, it is.
- it’s the treacher plan again!
Good idea! First we’ll coax Saddam out of his bunker with a trail of delicious candy. Then, once his belly is full and he’s all sleepy and happy, we’ll calmly explain that we don’t approve of what he’s been doing and it’s not very nice and we wish he’d stop. And he’ll be like, “Whoa, I never thought of it that way. You guys are my friends! I like you!” And then everybody will hug and cry, and then get a little embarrassed about crying, and then make some jokes to cover up being embarrassed. And then a beautiful rainbow will appear, and a shy unicorn will walk down it, and Saddam will ride the unicorn to the North Pole, and he’ll spend the rest of his life helping Santa make wonderful toys for all the good little girls and boys, and there’ll be hot chocolate, and, and, and, and nobody will ever ever die again for any reason ever. THE END

Lee Sales managed to drag him out for one minute forty secs.
Who says the ABC don’t do drama anymore.
- Certainly can’t fault Alcorn for wishing some of the WD correspondents damned and gone. That Phil seems an oleaginous uber-creep. One can imagine the whispy beard and the absolute self righteousness and the skanky footwear. Far more satisfying to simply push his face through the table. But that wouldn’t be right.
In the long term.
“But when the other side doesn’t even know there’s a problem what does that leave?”
…The nullification of an individual’s ability to command capital. Not only do these misguided fools not know that there’s a problem, the spiritually neutered doyens of the left openly and actively work in parallel with Islam’s fascist elements who’ve openly stated their goals to be the incremental prostration and ultimate ascendency over the secularized Judeo-Christian West whose institutions have evolved to allow us the luxury, as well as the liberty, to pursue an individual happiness of our own choosing. Apparently in their collectivist worldview, if it takes the multi-cultish conflation of the daily evils of real theocratic totalitarian fascists with the relatively tamed [civilized] instincts of Western self preservationists to achieve their egalitarian malaise, then so be it…Lalalalalala! The beat goes on.
Why the de facto pact between two supposedly diametrically opposed faiths?
In the ‘modern’ left’s perverted zero-sum world, there is no greater evil than “Joe Six-pack” and his/our personal mastery over the fruits of his/our own labor.
- Makes ya wonder what country this freak considers his own????
Because I just can’t reconcile the image of these two mussie nutters being the first to leap to “our” defence??? the life of a non-mussie is worth less than a mussie…
Along with a whole lot of other stuff about beating wives and stoning and cutting hands off etc, etc…
If you don’t mind Jack and Dave, I’ll just rely on someone else to watch my back thanks….
- Hamish is crushed by reality in a way that many people are who finally stumble through the doors of a church, looking for Truth. You won’t find the mening of life in money or fame or debauchery, and you won’t find the truth about Islam in the happy platitudes of the left. It’s not a religion of peace, the U.S. is not always to blame, and Israel is not a terrorist state.
Be patient with him; it’ll be a long, slow climb filed with many shattered illusions.
- To be fair with Hamish Alcorn…
At the moment I see people supporting their enemies – literally at times the very forces who would liquidate those with our values.
Is a point that has been made by, Mr. Downer, Mr. Blair (Tony), Mr. Bush, and here by Mr. Blair (his excellency, I believe) and well as if not all, a damn goodly number, of posters. You are absolutely correct in your assessment.
You are coming out of being held hostage by people supporting their enemies, appeasers, those that will not face reality, and outright enemies from within, dedicated to the very forces who would liquidate those with our values, to win.
You suffer from Stockholm Syndrome, you will become whole again. BUT, you did escape, good on ya’.
By the way, I believe the use of the term Neocons is better served by applying the term(s) realists or pragmatists, for what is happening, whether one thinks it is being done in a proper and forceful enough manner, is the debate, but….it IS real and IS being handled in a matter-of-fact way.
Listen to Iranians
We have heard very little about what the Iranian people think and want in this controversy, especially younger people.
I think, Ms. Elworthy, you haven’t been listening. I have been listening–at least to those Iranians who write and comment at blogs–and have concluded the following:
Yes, many Iranians, especially younger people, want more individual liberty and a more progressive, democratic form of government. BUT, they seem to think that such can be attained by a lot of “wishin’ and hopin’ and thinkin’ and prayin’, plannin’ and dreamin’ each night”. They don’t want to risk a bloody revolution and they certainly don’t want regime change imposed a la Afghanistan and Iraq. They don’t want to see any kind of sanctions imposed. And they see no reason at all why Iran, even Imawackjob’s Iran, should not be a nuclear nation up to and including weaponry. They believe completely in Persian superiority and the idea of Iran’s rightful place as the Middle Eastern leader. While I sympathize with the Iranian’s longing for freedom and prosperity, I scoff at their notion that such can be attained without sacrifice or cost.
Move the moral goalposts
A way of finessing the situation would be for the British government to declare that, in the interests of achieving a nuclear-free world, it will forego the chance to rebuild its Trident nuclear deterrent. The US could, with no risk to national security, announce the disposal of its Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). This missile has been around since the 1980s but is about to be “re-engined” to keep it operational for another thirty years.
I don’t know how old Ms. Elworthy is, but I can well imagine her as one of the peaceniks who during the Cold War advocated US unilateral disarmament in order to “set an example” for the rest of the world to follow. Elworthy ignores the first rule of confrontation: Know thy enemy. She ignores the reason why the Soviet Union could no longer maintain its “sphere of influence” around the globe and eventually collapsed altogether: “We simply could not outspend you”.
Her other two points are too ridiculous given the nature of fundamental Islam and the realities on the ground in Iran to even address. Bloody fool.

- If they have *time* the young people and women in Iran who would like to live in a modern state will probably prevail, if for no other reason than they outlive the others. Unfortunately for them the threat of a nuclear Iran is very real and the rest of the world may not be able to give them that time.
As for the neocons “war and stupid bluster”… I’m still trying to figure out what it is about “good cop” role that people don’t understand. Nothing about the war and bluster *prevents* other methods from being persued in paralell. Except that “other methods” generally consist of “if we talk real nice and act real passive maybe they’ll like us better” which isn’t sane.
I’m glad that some on the left are starting to realize that the threat is real. Maybe it will start to snowball. And while I think that the neocons have the right idea about solutions it bothers me that we’ve got this whole segment of our society whose mental and innovative resources are completely off-line when it comes to addressing the threat.

- #43. Hamish, one of the biggest problems with the war against islamofascism is that far too many people out there in the real world don’t understand that it is based on the quran.
It’s taken a few years now for people to start figuring out that those living in Iraq, and Iran, and ‘Palestine’ have bought into the poor, oppressed majority of muslims being held to ransom by the extremist minority of religion hijackers.
It’s not been helped by the collusion of academics and media commentators with those who would take away your freedom to complain about it all.
Will it come to bloody in the streets? I believe it will. Even as a warmongering, bloodthirsty rightwingdeathbogan, it’s not a situation I relish. Far from it.
I’d rather turn the clock back a couple of decades and raise my child in peace and blissful ignorance.
However… that’s not going to happen.
If it comes to nuking Tehran, so be it. If it comes to bombing the crap out of Gaza, then c’est la vie. These people voted in terrorists and support the right of a head of state to preach genocide, they deserve nothing from us.
Not from me, not from you, not from our governments.
We can talk about root causes until the cows come home, but that will not change the fact that they think that we should just roll over, and pay them money to oppress us.
Not in my lifetime, sunshine. Not now, not ever.
If you have solutions, let’s hear them.
On a slightly more personal note, I hope you can continue on your path to enlightenment relatively painlessly. It’s a very hard lesson you are learning when it comes to lefties and islamofascists and their handholding.
Apologies for the long rant.

The war against Iraq was a real blow against Islamofascism wasn’t it?
For what it’s worth, I disagreed at the time with the decision to go to war against Saddam, but I disagreed for tactical reasons, not moral reasons. Morally, if the US thinks that there are nations out there intent on killing large numbers of Americans, then it is entitled to stop them. I should add that there were Neo-Cons (e.g., Francis Fukuyama) who similarly disagreed with the decision. Regardless, contrary to my fears the invasion was successful and that war is long gone. The current situation is not that war, but a new civil war, where foreign insurgents are killing Iraqis in large numbers. American troops are sometimes targets, but typically they are simply witnesses to innocent people being killed. Schools, churches, government offices: nobody is safe. This war, insurgents versus Iraqi civilians, America cannot stop. If america pulls out, carnage will ensue on a stupendous scale.

Actually Hamish the Iraq Campaign plays an important role in the fight against the Islamist terrorists, and will play a bigger one if we don’t cut and run. The terrorists arise from the dysfunctional Arab and Muslim political culture. If that political culture is not reformed things will just get worse, and the Arab world will continue to stagnate. By catalyzing change to halfway decent consensual government in Iraq we infect the region with the virus of liberty, a deadly threat to the Islamists and jihadis. We cannot win against the terrorists by standing on the defensive. There is far too much to defend, and it’s too vulnerable. Iraq lets us fight on ground of our own choosing in several ways. Tactically we can pit skilled US soldiers and Marines against the terrorists, instead of unarmed airline stewardesses and passengers. Geographically it allows us to fight in the Middle East, and not in New York or Los Angeles. Strategically it allows us to seize the initiative, to force our enemies to react to our moves rather than we to his. This is part of what I meant about not standing on the defensive.
Finally the Iraq Campaign allows us to fight on our ground ideologically. The jihadis have a vision of a Worldwide Islamic Caliphate where the Muslims will swagger around lording it over the wretched dhimmis (that’s you and me Hamish). It is to be ruled by a totalitarian form of Islam. This is a flattering and attractive picture for Muslims, who believe they should rule the world because they’re Muslims dontcherknow. Against this we must pit our own Big Idea, which is liberty and prosperity in the modern world. This is also attractive to Muslims since they can see that the modern world works, while they have to take the Caliphate on faith. Muslims have been casting around for something to revitalize their societies for a couple of hundred years now. Pan-Islamism is just the latest false dream of doing so. But if we don’t fight it, it will triumph.
It will take time, and maybe we don’t have the time, but any other method I can see will be far more messy and far more bloody, especially for Muslims. I figured changing Iraq will take ten years or more, then other countries must be influenced to change as well. If you have better ideas Hamish let’s hear them, but don’t blather about “law enforcement”, “intelligence”, and “diplomacy”. All that is going on at the same time as the Iraq Campaign, they are conplementary not exclusive strategies in an ongoing wolrd war.

- As an ex-webdiarist, I just wanted to say that I never thought Hamish was a bad bloke.
I don’t need people to share my world-view (which is apparently conservative) in order for me to respect them on a personal level. Just being sincere, a ‘straight shooter’, no duplicity, is generally enough. (I’d actually apply that to Margo too who I still to this day think is very genuine and honest, if just hoplessly idealistic and naive!)
But some of the characters on Webdiary were, even if this sounds a little old-fashioned, “not good people”. There were some mendacious goons there who would literally claim that pigs could fly backwards if they thought it would advance their political cause. (If you ever hear of a bloke called Damian Lataan…)
And there were others who were just so obsessively biased that rational discourse was/is all but impossible. If you read that WD thread where Hamish cracks the shits, you may have noticed some posts by a bloke called Phil Kendall. (That’s if you’re able to decipher into english his bizarre style which seems to require more translation than Ahmanijad speeches.) This whackjob is the type of tosser who, when presented with an Al-Jazeera article that refutes his point, rebuts by suggesting that Al-Jazeera is a “psyop”!
I mean, you can’t even have a rational conversation with a guy like that. But Hamish is not a ‘guy like that’…
Whatever his political leanings, Hamish does live in the real world, as opposed to some of the deranged moonbats about the place whose brains had clearly left for fantasy-land.
I guess I’m just saying, go easy…
- And Solomon has always seemed to be quite a nice fellow too – if perhaps a bit serious and melancholic. But he also has quite a wry, self-depracating sense of humour.
When he said “I’d write you a poem, Hamish, but Tim Blair would make fun of me” – I suspect he knew exactly the kind of reaction it would provoke here, and probably had a chuckle to himself.

- Daddy Dave, so is Geoff, Ck, and quite a number of past/present commenters on timblair.net.
It’s worth remembering that when Webdiary was run on the SMH, Margo’s goal was to create a forum where people from different perspectives could talk (even though Margo herself is a lefty on many/most issues).
She failed – and the site became (mostly) a left-wing circle-jerk. In fact, after she left, it became worst, and seems to be dominated now by extremists, conspiracy theorists and anti-semites.
But she did try – and I think Hamish did too.
When she went independent, she said publicly on radio interview that her greatest fear was that “she would lose her right-wing regulars” (or words to that effect). She actually didn’t, but the site failed for many other reasons, not the least being a hopeless misconception of how the blogosphere actually work, and a desperate insistence that “this is not a blog”.
Margo is a lefty, but I think her true passion is media issues.
ekb87… you’re an ex-webdiarist?! Wow, you win on the ex-lefty credentials. All I can claim is lots of protests, placards, rainbow scarves, tie-die shirts, and public transport.
Just to clarify, I was at webdiary – but as a conservative.
But yes, like more than a few here (including TB himself I believe), my past has indeed included protests, placards, and an unnecessarily elevated level of concern for the fate of baby seals!
