Jock Paull, of TISM and Blind Lemon Chicken, has died at 50.
Paull was born in Blackburn and educated at Xavier College and St Patrick’s College, Ballarat
I’m sorry, but I just had the image of young Paull as an altar boy.
From the Catholic Church to TISM. Talk about an unlikely career arc.Posted by SwinishCapitalist on 2008 05 07 at 11:52 PM • permalink

- Whatever happened to original and amusing rock and roll acts like TISM?
RIP.

- #1 they also had a song around the same time called “Greg! The stop sign!” which I thought was hilarious at the time.
These were guys who thought that death was funny and should be mocked.

- I loved them, a bunch of wankers, but in a good way.
For those who came in late, TISM stood for “this is serious mum”.Posted by thefrollickingmole on 2008 05 08 at 01:14 AM • permalink
- 11. True, they were definitely wankers in the theatresports/I’m so witty vein. Good muso’s though and get a free pass for the chorus:
“give me your seal of approval (and),
let’s club it to death”Live shows were good fun.

- I ‘interviewed’ them a couple of times during my time in newspapers. At my appointed interview time I had to fax them the questions and about an hour later they faxed back with the answers.
Hilarious.
I recall another time they held a press conference. They stood in the middle of the MCG with the media in the stands.
Jock will be sadly missed.

- Is this what happens when we get old? All our legends start to die off at an age not much more advanced than ours?
From their stage antics, I never would have believed he was 50.
If I can be bothered, I will listen to “I’m interested in apathy” tonight.

- An excellent background on TISM.
Their objections to other bands and their own fans are piss funny.

- I’m pretty sure Paull was actually “Jock Cheese”, wasn’t he?
Update: No, wait, that’s wrong too.
If I recall my TISM secret identities correctly…
Ron Hitler-Barrassi = Peter Minack
Humphrey B Flaubert = Damian Cowell
Tokin Blackman – James Paull – session musician
Jock Cheese – John/Jack Holt –
Eugene De La Hot Croix Bun – Eugene ChesterCalling Paull “Jock” got me mixed up…my bad.

- Hiding behind the masks of TISM were apparently some ordinary folk, including a couple of teachers.
This stands in stark contrast to the commenters here, many of whom are movie stars biding time between projects.

perhaps we all know each other in real life! Brad, Nicole, George,… is it really you? Can these masks come off at last?

- Brilliant.
Possibly the best filmclip & song of all time.Posted by thefrollickingmole on 2008 05 08 at 03:30 AM • permalink
Even within TISM he pushed the boundaries, scoring and conducting a fully realised madrigal piece that was unceremoniously tacked on to the end of an album — unlisted and unlauded.
This must have been Phillip Glass’s Arse on Machiavelli and the Four Seasons:
I could smell her perfume still, lingering in my bed,
Lingering, lingering, lingering, lingering, ling-er-ing in my bed,
But up Phillip Glass’s [high note] ARRRSE
Is where I keep my head.RIP

Remember when Tim teased us about a certain movie star being a regular reader? (Not John Malkovich, apparently).
Tom Cruise?

- Only the other day, a bunch of us hardened Oilfield hands sang “I’m on the drugs that killed River Pheonix” in relation to a clown that was working with us. God! what a lossPosted by deadparrot on 2008 05 08 at 07:15 AM • permalink
- A bit of old news- TISM certainly covered the Fuh”rer, and had a fair indication of what Brunswick, Fitzroy and lots of other tosser-toriums are infested with.
I’ll miss Jock.
- #17 I always thought TISM were really The Wiggles . . . . like, you never saw them play the same gig at the same time.Posted by Young and Free on 2008 05 08 at 08:30 AM • permalink
- School teachers and at least one advertising copywriter. The guitar licks on the country version of Defecate is gold.
Life is like cum, you gag but you swallow.
Thanks Jock. RIP.

- It’s just sad that a guy as young as that had to die. I loved TISM, had most of the albums and was lucky enough to be one of a bunch of lucky people to participate in a couple of their gigs. Oh, it was fun!:)
I’m rapidly coming to the conclusion that any talk at all about music in this country is a colossal wank.
Play it, don’t say it!

- I wasn’t familiar with TISM but death at 50. wow. too young.
Reminds me of another great one who left us at 50. Joe Strummer.
- 34 – I’d like to think that one of the band members will read that here and steal it for the eulogy.Posted by SwinishCapitalist on 2008 05 08 at 05:08 PM • permalink
- Ah TISM. They aptly described Jim Morrison with words that could equally be applied to Bill Clinton:
By Christ you’ve got a long long way
on a schoolboy’s talent with words
One crappy bit of symbolism
and you’re adored by an army of turdsYou’re a selfish, rude, arrogant prick
You’re basically pretty stupid
You’re mysticism’s a lump of shit
And so are all the girls you’ve rooted
- You know you’re a Victim of Tism when you start quoting their lyrics till everyone begs you to stop, and when you invent a Tism name for yourself – mine is ‘Jack Kerouaccadacca‘.Posted by David Morgan on 2008 05 08 at 08:11 PM • permalink

- Just to be slightly tedious the proper name of the “river phoenix” song was ‘There will never be… an old man river”.
That I think sums up the true & complete punk mentality that was/is TISM
