“I’ve always encouraged people not to engage in hunger strikes in the past,” says Andrew Bartlett, “and I still don’t encourage them to do so.” Nevertheless, the former Democrats leader plans to begin a hunger strike this weekend.
He’s an unpredictable fellow, our Andrew. Did you know, for example, that he’s a closet P.J. O’Rourke fan and a reader—an approving reader—of this site? Maybe we should send him some food. Bartlett and George W. Bush aren’t the only politicians who get blogs, by the way; yesterday I received a Christmas card from Minister for Foreign Affairs (and fellow pawn of the hegemon) Alexander Downer. You know, if this place is enjoyed by conservatives and Democrats alike, I must be doing something seriously wrong.
Sam Ward is operating on a much higher level, becoming ensnared in a drinking session with Ian Chappell, Waqar Younis, and Simon O’Donnell. I was an O’Donnell drinky victim in ‘93, although we weren’t joined by other old cricketers; instead, we had to make do with the company of model Jo Bailey.
Sigh.

- I wish somebody would explain hunger strikes to me, I mean, how they’re supposed to work. Or even how the hunger strike person thinks they’re supposed to work.Posted by rhhardin on 12/18 at 05:52 AM • permalink
- P.J.’s one of my favorite people, so I had to post this on Barlett’s blog.
If you’re a leftie, you may not be able to follow this line of thought. Although I haven’t vetted P.J. O’Rourke’s work for accuracy, it really doesn’t matter because P.J. writes humor and biting commentary and doesn’t pretend he’s writing textbooks.
On the other hand, Michael Moore’s books and films are fantasy and distortion and he calls them documentaries. If he’s telling lies, it really does matter. See the difference?
Isn’t it about time the left stops using the tired old propaganda ploy of claiming moral equivalency when there’s none to be found. It’s getting embarrassing.
- Do you have Jo Bailey’s telepone number?
Actually this is spam, posted by his famiily, we want him to get banned until the new year so he can get off the computer over the festive season.
(Admin note: I fixed your link here. You must have hit “enter” in the middle of the link words “Popper on education”; anyway there was a line break that broke the code.)
- Bartlett’s pseudo-self-immolation is a convenient and hypocritcal excuse for losing a few kgs before Xmas. That is, a pre-Xmas diet instead of a post-binge one.
Still, how can the Democrats get publicity these days, when they are a spent force that voters don’t give tuppence for?

- Bartlett, from what I have been told by members of the Democrats, has a very dry sense of humour (dry – get it). Okay, I used to be a member of the bloody Democrats.
He also used to be a goth and they have a sense of the absurd, or they are just plain absurd.
Goths also have been known to survive on nothing but goat’s blood and moonlight. However, it takes a lot of food and grub to feed someone with an elevated sense of their own morality and importance (i.e. a Democrat).
He’ll never make it.
PS – Hate to ask because I am so shy and retiring, but the link on my name at the sidebar is on my old, evil blog. Can this be changed?

- Whoops! I just copied Tim’s old blogroll, that’s right. I’ll change your website link asap. And I’ll add you, Quentin. I actually copied the newest one, but it’s possible I accidentally deleted a line or two.Posted by Andrea Harris on 12/18 at 02:04 PM • permalink
- There. Updated. People will not be led to evil Blogspot if they click on Darlene’s name. I put you under Currency Lad, Quentin.Posted by Andrea Harris on 12/18 at 02:06 PM • permalink
- What a wonderful way to bring in Christmas + the New Year. As if Bush and Howard winning re-election (a 4th term in Howard’s case) wasn’t enough, now we have at least two Lefties (Bartlett and Tom Keneally) going on Hunger Strikes. Can you just FEEEEEL the compassion?

- I thought the idea of a hunger strike was to carry on until your demands were met or to continue starving until you carked it.However in spite of all the detained illegal “refugees” who have gone on hunger strikes I can’t recall one who has had the guts to go the distance.Let’s hope Andrew shows a little more committment because I don’t think Amanda is likely to fold.
- I can never take Barto seriously, everything he says sounds like he has been at the singing syrup again.
Thankfully, I won’t have to listen to the dunce after he drops off the radar next July.
A “goth”? and he got into the Senate? Sheeeesh.
