Henri Paul sure looks like the the kind of guy you’d trust to drive you at high speed through narrow Paris streets:
Oh yeah! No need for seat belts with this ace in charge …
UPDATE. Ten News tonight claimed the second photograph was taken “just moments before” the fatal crash, zooming in on Paul’s startled expression for emphasis. Not so; the Daily Mail reports the photograph was taken as “the Mercedes roars away from the Ritz” – about five minutes before the vehicle crashed. Another clue: the shot shows bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones is yet to attach his seat belt, which he was wearing at the moment of impact.
UPDATE II. Ten’s late news now claim the photographs above depict Diana and company “just seconds before [they] crashed” and that they show the driver and passengers are “plainly concerned by surrounding paparazzi”. But the British coroner records that the two close-up images were both taken in Rue Cambon – the rear exit of the Ritz Hotel. The Merc at that point wasn’t about to crash; it had just left the car park.
