This tragic news will have everyone crying like a Kennedy at closing time:

Green Left Weekly is facing a serious financial crisis. Last year we finished with a $35,000 deficit and so far this year are almost $65,000 down — that’s a combined shortfall of $100,000! We have borrowed to keep going, but if this trend continues we can’t go on. It’s as simple as that.

Here’s to simplicity. “The last two years have been hard for the progressive movements,” continues Green Left Weekly’s Peter ”Lance” Boyle. “The retreat of the huge global anti-war movement after the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and the re-election of PM John Howard’s Coalition government have left their mark.” Boyle then pleads for cash. No money for retreaters!

And sell what? Empty patchouli bottles, corroded bongs and old Indigo Girls vinyl?

    1. What, Dave?  You’ve never been to a yard sale that had nothing but junk the owners couldn’t bring themselves to toss?  Sounds like the Greens to me!

It’s either that, or they start up a bordello.  OTOH……if most of their members are ancient hippies, never mind!

    1. I think, historically, “grue’’ in philosophy has been used to mean “green before 2000, and blue afterwards,’’ the idea being that all the evidence that something is green (when it was used, before 2000) is also evidence that that something is blue.  This was used to fluster students.

But now we can distinguish them.  The greens turn out to be grue.

    1. I checked out their web site: the omnipresent picture of Che Guevara (green-hued, of course), various lefty links (caution: something called the Third Annual Australia in Solidarity with Latin America conference is coming up in October), and . . .pretty much nothing else. Conspicuous by their absence were those entities known as “advertisers”. What, no capitalists willing to sell rope to these commies (or donate rope, in this case, since they’re so broke)? I enjoyed the reference in the appeal to “left regroupment”, which I take to mean the misguided sons and daughters of (most likely) the idle rich, gathered at poolside to discuss the travails of the proletariat, and complain about mom and dad’s insistence that they get real jobs. The Flat Earth Society is less absurd and irrelevant than these bozos.

Why should a magazine as important as Green Left have to worry about things such as having a market for what they produce?

    1. well I can see drastic action is called for.

First – cutbacks – typesetting and printing to be outsourced – ancillary staff such as Doctrine Adherence Supervisors have to go.

Next – remaining staff to be placed on AWAs. Higher bonuses for more effective performance. We have to push our presence in the market.

Next – Strategic alliances. –  Having our own distribution network is a sub-optimal paradigm. We should be teaming up with distributors like the Larouchie’s Epoch Times, Falun Gong and the Big Issue. Yes I know those scabs are giveaways while we sell ours but hey guys, the revolution’s over.

Next – Advertising – no more turning away Starbucks, Gunns and Benson and Hedges – if they have the money, we have the space.

Finally – Donations to the Greens have to be stopped.  Donations now only to be to parties who’ll do something for us – if you know what I mean.

And if this fails – I’ve heard Murdoch is in the market for another newspaper.

    1. Why don’t they just recruit a new editor, from, say, Scotland, re-design the paper every three days or so, and launch a glossy lifestyle insert?

A shortfall of $100,000?  There’s that number, coming back to haunt them.

    1. If property is theft, and profit is the decaying paradigm of capitalist oppression, why are they bothered about such arcane concepts as profit and/or loss? The collapse of the military-industrial complex is imminent- so what if they get evicted from their office and have to survive on the meagre pittance unwillingly doled out by the state (like that would be a change anyway); when the workers, enraged by their increased earnings from ditching unions and signing VWAs, rise up and smash the neo-con parasites and install a state based on equity, justice and diversity, the editorial staff of GLW will be first in line for a ZIL and a concrete apartment overlooking the new Kremlin people’s assembly.

    1. “I’m glad you guys are keeping up the fight”, isn’t what I overhear people say, when they pass by Green Weekly street sellers. More like, “How terribly ‘70s” and “Quite quaint, really; sort of nostalgic”. Perhaps the National Trust should be asked to list GW as a heritage/ endangered species item.

Well, how I’ve always said it is: “The Workers United, Will Never Be Elected!”.  Goes down a treat at protests.

I can only hope the publishers’ personal fortunes are sunk into this fiasco of a ferrago, and not my bank’s, or worse still, my taxes.

    1. Here’s an idea.
Why don’t they have a local Live 8 style concert on the Sydney Town Hall steps where stoned buskers and bongo drum players from around the nation can come play to their captive audience. The ABC and SBS could telivise it applying pressure and pleading with the lending institution to forgive the $100K debt. Then we could have the concert again in another 12 months time for the very same cause and things could continue exactly as they have been in perpetuity.
      Problem solved!
