The Sydney Morning Herald’s Hugh Mackay on the deaths of Steve Irwin and Peter Brock, and swimmer Ian Thorpe’s retirement:

Steve was one of our great gifts to the world. Some of the neighbours might have been saying “Steve who?” and making up jokes about stingrays, but in America people were openly weeping …

And then for Peter Perfect to go so soon after, crashing a car of all things. It was too much. Yet there was a kind of poetry in it, we all felt. A stingray for Steve, a prang for Peter. Going out doing what they loved best. May we all be so lucky.

Thinking along the same lines, you can’t help wondering whether Ian would have done better to have met with a watery accident of some kind.

What a ghastly little man is Mackay.

    1. Standard SMH “humour”. This guy makes Adele Horin sound funny.

    1. I hesitate to speculate, but there’s nothing like a death to immortalise you.

He didn’t hesitate at all.  If he had, for just one split second, he might have realized what a stupid son-of-a-beagle he sounds like.

    1. If Thorpe wasn’t prone to Peter Allen musicals, I’d suggest that Hugh wouldn’t have the balls to suggest the same fate for Warne, Michael Voss or Andrew Johns.

      Is this Galloway humour, perhaps?

    1. Is it a suicide note?

      One can only hope.

    1. Hugh Mackay is a psychologist, social researcher and writer.

Thinking along the same lines, you can’t help wondering whether Hugh would have done better to have met his end at the hands of a psychopathic patient, clubbed with his own bronze bust of Sigmund Freud.

    1. Last line says it all.

“Arrogance, triumphalism and vengeance turn out to be the most ungodly traits imaginable.”

Nearer your God, than thee, hey Hugh?

    1. ‘As for AWB, least said, soonest mended’

is this an admission that the shiny new leader has spent over a year barking up the wrong tree and the ALP line has been not only wrong and slanderous but has damaged our farmers and cost the country billions in lost exports?

    1. A completely crass sms I received from a mate after both these great Australians died: “Mate, Peter Brock died doing what he loved, Steve Irwin died doing what he loved. I’m worried about you, for God’s sake don’t have a wank tonight.”
All I can remember thinking after I heard about both their deaths is “Christ, I hope someone has wrapped David Boon in cotton wool.”
Mackay wouldn’t know journalism if it jumped up and bit him on the arse.

    1. Going by McKay’s logic, perhaps Shane Warne will be impaled by a cricket stump and bleed to death on the pitch in his final test.

    1. Merry Christmas to Tim, Andrea and all the crew here and thanks for making this site so entertaining – much appreciated

As for Hugh Mackay – he’s written this letter to the world in his wonderfully arrogant and superior style as if it’s coming from us plebs – you know Mr and Mrs Ordinary who didn’t follow the AWB matter, who actually care about Steve Irwin and   Brockie and the cricket and values

He needs a smack in the mouth as he’s getting to be as nasty as Leunig and David Williamson

    1. Obviously the Left is still smarting from Col Allen’s concise summation last month of what afflicts current journalism and hence falling circulation numbers – no humour. And the harder they try…

    1. Hugh Mackay used to make sense to me once, when he wrote in the AFR (does he still?). Is that because he did, or because I’ve shifted a lot in my political beliefs and leanings since then?

That’s not fair. Sometimes they hate whole countries as well. Like America, Australia, Israel…
