“If a person was about to be killed,” writes Margonaut Marilyn Shepherd, “I would bring them out of the country in a boot.”

You know, it’s just as well Margo employs two full-time comment editors, otherwise blunders like that might actually be published. So also might these, from a single comments stream:

His appalling racist comments about Asian immigration in 1988, although I was only 11 years old at the time I still remember it very clearly because my best friend was a young man by the name John Huang a recently arrived immigrant from Taiwan.

Are we waiting for Australian’s to be killed?

What a loverly dreamery world Craig lives in.

In my eyes Margo has a huge and generous heart and her words and ideas are aimed designed to build a inclusive and magnificent cathedral.

Future must be entrusted to voices of Craig Wartons.

I find whats happening in politics very disturbing.

I find what’s happening in Margotopia very disturbing. How much is she paying these illiterate bolderers?

On the other matter you raise, comments editing is full on, Craig, and is absolutely punishing on anyone who does the job for more than a few weeks. Yes, mistakes are made, but we’re trying always to get consistency in editing

Funny how she left a letter from Ben Oquist untouched regarding the Greens yet never mentioned exactly who he works for. I thought that Webdiary posters had to disclose their political affiliations? Those extra letters must really get the ‘hit counts’ up.

    1. 99% of the Afghans who came on the boats live here as genuine refugees. That is because they came this way and the only nation that has signed the refugee convention is us.
If they had other protection elsewhere we would not owe them protection under the convention – we did and they are here.
Oh my god! Unilateral convention signing!  A blatant breach of the UN’s turf.  Shame, Australia, shame.

Wha…? Marilyn Shepherd channels the Fish License sketch?

      Mr Praline Marilyn:
I am not a looney! Why should I be tarred with the epithet looney, merely because I have a pet halibut? I’ve heard tell that Sir Gerald Nabardo has a pet prawn called Simon and you wouldn’t call him a looney; furthermore, Dawn Pailthorpe, the lady show-jumper, had a clam, called Stafford, after the late Chancellor, Allan Bullock has two pikes, both called Chris, and Marcel Proust had an haddock! So, if you’re calling the author of ‘A la recherche du temps perdu’ a looney, I shall have to ask you to step outside!

    1. This from a guy going under the name Graeme Finn was pretty funny too:

I criticise US policy because Australia supports it and I am Australian and wish us to stop our lockstep march to privatised military madness. Critical comments towards the previous USSR would be a waste of time as I have no influence in those countries.

Single man, 44, in share accom in inner west, no car, one bicycle, one indoor cat (with a taste for my blood) and I save spiders as well.

Ladies? Graeme has influence in countries other than the “previous USSR” and is generally a dreamboot: “share accom, no car, cat, spider saver.” Hell, I’d do him and I’m a guy. And, uh, not gay.

I trust so, because in a post of this nature it would be somewhat of a pity to bowdlerise that particular word. (That would be “bowdlerize” with a zee for our spelling-challenged Amreican allies).

Is the pot calling the kettle black? Is this a case of bowdleriser, heal thyself? Is the boot (that’s trunk for our American allies, with a tee)on the other foot.

Not really. It’s actually an interesting social phenomenon. Throughout the 80s there was a concerted movement that forced the hitherto incarcerated mentally unstable population to live at large in the community. A lot of people were thrown out of asylums. 1. What worries me is that the Left in this country is still trying to fight the 2001 election, boat people as an issue ended in 2003 when they stopped coming. This is because the Liberal party not only stemmed the flow, they turned the tap off completely. It seems to me that Beazley, the ALP and the Left are still trying to claim the 2001 election was lost due to the Tampa arriving, not the fact that they had no policies or that the Australian people wanted to dump Beazley as leader, justified in recent news polls. This obsession with the past was again demonstrated in the 2004 election, Latham admitted as much on Lateline, when the ALP was again caught focusing solely on the issue of security and Iraq, Howard then raised the issue of economic management which completely blindsiding the ALP and hit them for six.

    1. Holy crap hank (#31), that bio is really a satire of recent left history.  You couldn’t look at it and not start laughing.

I smiled at the statement that kind of implied she had seven genetic parents.

I snickered at the discovery that dear marilyn was an anti-vietnam and franklin dam protester ( pigeon hole anyone?).

A started giggling a the revelation that she worked for ‘fairies in the garden’ John Coulter (an ex leader of the Australian Democrats whose campaign started in the back yard, with goodness and light surrounding).  It would not surprise me if it was all her idea.

I ROTFL at the next paragraph, which revealed she worked with Tony Kevin on the consipracy thoery that the Government was somehow involved in the sinking of SIEVX (or was it the government knew SIEVX was sinking, but turned the navy away??).

Tears ran down my face when it transpired she was involved with the charletan Bakhtiaryi family (fake refugees who pretended they were Afghan to seek asylum, when they were in fact pakistani).

I have not participated in the ridicule of marilyn before, as I thought she was a well meaning old bat, and thus it was somehow cruel.  Now I know better.  Calling her loony is an insult to loons.

    1. Marilyn would wait right up until the last second, when a person is “about to be killed” before she would bother to rally her incandescent spewing rage to move away from her keyboard and to get off her butt to help anyone.

Given that this is her own criteria to engender action, it wouldn’t take much for the intended ‘rescuee’ to end up dead; when you are “about to be killed” a few seconds can make the difference, one way or another.

Therefore, I conclude, that Marilyn intended to write “boot”.  It’s well known that the bodies go in the boot, not the boat.

    1. What a glorious day. I finally rated a mention on Timblair.net. Thank you Tim for pointing out my minor spelling mistake and punctuation error, your constructive criticism is much appreciated. My only criticism of you is that you didn’t attribute my name to my comments. This has lead to a few of your contributors confusing my words with Marilyn’s (is that the correct use of an apostrophe?).

I was the person who was 11 years old when John Howard was suggesting a reduction in the level of Asian immigration. For those of you who may not recall the context and substance of those comments, in July 1988, following earlier comments by Geoffrey Blainey that the level of Asian immigration posed a threat to Australia’s future, Howard began to speak in media interviews of a possible reduction in Asian migration. If you recall, these comments did not go down too well and helped hasten his political demise as leader of the Opposition.

Tim and friends by all means question my views and opinions. The reason I contribute to such a public forum is to have my beliefs challenged. But to engage in such a childish display of nitpicking, over a spelling mistake and a few punctuation errors, diminishes you more than it diminishes me.

BTW, the boot Marilyn was referring too is a car boot or trunk. According to The Australian Pocket Oxford Dictionary a boot is the “luggage-compartment of a motor-car.” I hope that clears things up.
