Yet more per capita shame-mongering:
If the rest of the world emitted carbon gases at the same per person rate as Australia, its population would need seven planets to sustain the pollution, according to a damning United Nations report.
If the rest of the world lived in countries as large as Australia, with similarly small populations reliant on non-nuclear energy, the UN might be on to something.
Australia is third in per capita emissions to the US and Canada …
We’re all the way up to third now? What happened to Trinidad? For that matter, what happened to UAE, Bahrain and Singapore? There’s a serious lack of consensus in these emissions reports.
Prime Minister-elect Kevin Rudd … has pledged to slash emissions by 60% based on 2000 levels by 2050.
Rudd will be 93 years old by then, and in his 15th term. No man can defeat the Perma-Rudd.
Epidemiologist Professor Tony McMichael, of the Australian National University, said the report was particularly relevant to Australians.
“Our levels of production, consumption and waste generation, per person, are at the very top end of the international league table …” he said. “Hopefully, the Rudd Government will take rapid action to help redress this serious imbalance.”
Over to you, Prime Minister. What “rapid action” will you take?
As far as I can see, the most effective way to cut overall consumption is to make us poor. I expect he has started in on that already.

This is gonna be comedic gold. In 3 years, Australia is expected to have already consistently achieved a (60%/43 yrs*3yrs) 4.18% avg reduction on CO2 output. Now, we can either a. increase the death rate by the corresponding amount of population and remove their entire CO2 output from the equation (transport, food production, electricity etc) or b. commence sending container loads of taxpayers cash to Chad and the Sudan in carbon “offsets”.
Any guesses on where the ALP will take this?
“Prime Minister-elect Kevin Rudd … has pledged to slash emissions by 60%…”
Sounds like it’s back to the stone age for you guys.
Have fun walking after the socialists take your cars away.

What do Australia and Canada have in common – gee wiz think think think. Try small population in a large land mass along with one of the major industries being mining. Solution – well we can follow the European model – 192 nuclear reactors….and counting (up)!!!!
Seriously though – large land mass, long transport distances, heavy energy intensive industry (most of which is in the middle of bloody nowhere so it will always rely on remotely generated power). I guess they will only be happy when we just huddle on the coast in caves eating berries and beetles.
Damn articles like this really tick me off.
GDP per capita, I meant… here ya go…

- What a lot of codswallop this global warming/climate change is- We have seen a new government voted in with this issue one of their main spout pieces. Well today the good old CFA are out in force burning all 8 ks of road side grass. I am sitting here hoping to stop them in my neck of the bush as we have 20 native hens with nests somewhere in the long grass. Lots of tigers about-snakes that is. Al gore where are you? we need a little global coolant today.
Talking of smakes- wonder when the red hooded cobra will strike the puffy chipmunchkin.
Perhaps the good Perfesser McMichael could start setting an example of how to live a low income, low consumption life by giving back the $4 MILLION GRANT he was recently awarded.

“So and so* reckons it’s all bullshit. Clean coal, that’s bullshit too.”
There is a bit of a struggle in the EIS industry between scientific objectivity and leaping aboard the gravy train.
*As this is in the realms of hearsay, I’d rather not name Australia’s most experienced environmental impact assessor.
Aussies, Brits or any other ally with troops away from home…there are some neutrals that can be sent.

Gibbo, what’s the bull in the article stating the 1,000 against the school were against it because it would bring violence to the area?
(Though they may be right, I don’t recall that being a major complaint. Thought it was the use of local facilities without any contribution to the Local Government.)
Whew, at least we’re still number 1 at something…. U.S.A. …U.S.A. …U.S.A….

I got it all figured out: WHY DON’T THEY JUST build a s**tload of desalinization plants (preferably without rendering any dinosaurs extinct), irrigate that blank space on the map, and plant trees. Voilà—instant carbon sink.
Just as an aside – anything that follows the phrase “Why don’t they just…” is likely to be
(1) unbearably stupid, and
(b) a Labour (Australia or UK; Democrat in US) campaign promise.
Why is Rudd trying to kill off Canadians,
Does anyone in Australia even know what a -35 wind chill feels like.
Never mind that it doesn’t really get cold until January. More than a month away,…

Climate change ruling ‘sets precedent for developers’
“The Land and Environment Court stopped the $250 million housing and aged care development from going ahead at Sandon Point, south of Sydney, because of the possible impact of coastal flooding caused by climate change.”
Its going to get worse, much worse before this foolishness stops. (Wonder if they used Karl “14 metre” Krustiknickers figures of the lower ones??

Hey, I want to see Canada up there in this hall of fame. Surely we must be #1 per capita carbonistas. We have to burn energy in the summer to keep cool and in the winter to keep warm. And it’s a long way to the deppaneur corner store in Maniwaki.
Wwe’er #1. We’re #1…?

#763 Hollingshead, did you hear the hysterical fiction that was broadcast on the CBC Saturday science program? I had to turn it off after 5 minutes. The program consisted of fiction being passed off as science.

#67 – WTF, the WA State Government recently fleeced buyers ignorant of the effects of climate-change-induced rising sea levels when it auctioned waterfront blocks at Port Coogee, just south of Fremantle, for $78m. Average price for the modest sized blocks was more than $3m. The buyers should sue!
I keep looking out for terrified true climate-change believers causing a fire sale in beach and riverside property in Perth, but the values keep heading north, not south. Funny that there’s a fundamental disconnect between the global warming rhetoric and behaviour everywhere.
Academy Award Material… #70 again.
Another best/worst story on Australia.
Australia ‘third best to live, third highest polluter’
I wonder where wed rank if the terrible pollutant (since when???) CO2 was taken out?
I guess 3rd best to live & 152nd most polluted doesn’t have the same ring to it eh?And take this you Americans!!! You are ranked 12th by the mighty UN.
“Rich free-market countries dominate the top places of the United Nations liveability report, with Iceland, Norway, Australia, Canada and Ireland the first five while the United States slipped to 12th place from eighth last year in the Human Development Index.”
Geez lucky for America they’ve got Australia to help prop them up?

- Bruce Flegg has apparently been asked to finish as leader of the Qld Liberal Party.
World Today transcript headline is that the leadership challenge has fizzled… but Dr Flegg has been told by Warwick Parer Party president tells Flegg to step aside….
The pollution figures are obviously out of date. They haven’t been politically adjusted to take account of the new Rudd Labor government.
Political adjustment is a simple sliding scale that alters carbon output depending on where on the political spectrum your national government sits. Canada was actually the cleanest country on earth until it elected Stephen Harper and it follows that Australia should now sit somewhere back with the Europeans.
The best illustration of the sliding scale is that smog in China, with its newfound capitalism, is deadly, while Europe’s thick and hazy skies are actually good for your lungs.
“Australia is third in per capita emissions to the US and Canada … What happened to Trinidad? For that matter, what happened to UAE, Bahrain and Singapore?…”
‘Global warming’ is an exclusively ‘Anglospheric’ crime.
“Australia is third in per capita emissions to the US and Canada …”
Stuff that, I say we push for first, who is with me!!

- Scientists Bad, Visiting Japanese Good
Now that they’ve won the climate change argument, rules can change too.
Gus Nossel and the CSIRO think GM canola is ok, and ALP State governments are falling like third world dominoes in their rush to lift bans.
No So Fast! 7.30 Report Here: These GM crops have to be further studied, and a visiting group of Japanese have pleaded with us not to go GM. What’s more, Coles and Woolies don’t like it. Those CSIRO types are in the pay of the GM brigade. So there. Stop it at once.
#69 Wimpy Canadian nope I am one of those rare birds who don’t have tv in fact to see the Grey cup I had to visit someone.
But none of my memories of the CBC are good.
God Bless the internet, eh.
And I get to pay 70.00 per year for the left wing bias.
PS it’s still friggin cold out, and Australia doesn’t care that the polar bears are freezing to death. 🙁
