Tony Parkinson, sane guy at The Age, on events in Iraq:

This week, for a second time this year, Iraqis braved violence and intimidation to go the polls. Whichever way the vote goes on the draft constitution, never before have citizens of an Arab nation had the right to decide the laws under which they will be governed.

You might think that, in itself, is a significant milestone. But no. Instead, we have heard how the constitution was flawed, the vote fraudulent and the result destined to trigger civil war. The nay-saying has been relentless.

Comical Ali, wherever he is, must be loving this. For of all the lies Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf told during his infamous stint as Saddam’s minister for disinformation, none have been quite so brazen as the attempts this week to turn the facts on their head.

Parkinson may lately have been reading dispatches from Comical Paul McGeough.

    1. Judging from recent articles like this one and this one, it looks like Michael Gawenda is joining Tony Parkinson in The Age’s Sane Guys’ Society.

    1. sbs “news” tonight showed the flooding of Malta by “refugees” from Africa. The tiny country has been overwhelmed by 1500 asylum seekers this year, after a “terrible sea journey.”
Presenter hot lips Chen -“over and over the same question is being asked, will no other country take some of these people?” Sound familiar? Morocco is being inundated by so many people that it is shooting them.
The dastardly West is at fault again…its our fault that our countries are so good to live in because we are democracies.
If the left and the public media has their way we won’t be desirable for much longer.

When Muslims invaded Europe,France etc they had a profound influence on art, philosophy and science.(presumably a “beneficial” one according to aunty and geraldine.
Well bet the conquered populations were very happy about that (not). Oh good oh,that’s all right then…..

But of course…spreading your culture is just fine unless you’re the evil US, and if you’re from a Muslim country you’re even allowed to do it by invading. Omelets and breaking eggs, I’m sure somebody at the ABC would explain it as.

    1. sorry to be such an oaf and infantile but do some of us think abc and sbs are traitorous?Especially when they are using our money and only represent about 15% of the population or 18% altogether.
Is it time more people got up and said so..
presumably we still have free speech in this country.

    1. Tony Parkinson has been a real lone-hand at the Age for some time.

Notice, however, that his by-line changed from ‘Foreign Affairs Editor’ to ‘Senior journalist’ just a few weeks after newbie Andrew Jaspan arrived to mess things up (and fire Gerhard Henderson at the same time).

    1. don’t know about free speech with the taxpayer-funded ABC running their multiple stations

but certainly something approaching free speech sees the age’s circulation dwindle alarmingly to about two suburbs in inner-city melbourne and a couple of copies for the editor’s desk, maybe, so he can analyse the kerning, the type, the pic, whatever

not forgetting the scores delivered to ad agencies whose clients like to believe some shit the salesman has told them about a bigger paper showing their products larger to a couple of aging ABs in Wattletree Road.

      but real readers?

real readers are like, the age? i bought a car decades ago and a house years ago, why would i read the age any more?

I know Malta well. It’s tiny, its poor, but it has got by, albeit with very little margin – farmers have microscopic plots and tanks to wash the soil off vegetables before sending them to market – it’s that precious.

This invasion could be a disaster for it.

Free speech?  Crash, this type of talk is squashing SBS’s right to dissent!  And you’re the squasher.  And you’re probably oafish and infantile too.

All in all, it makes me wonder if you’ve been the one stealing commas from the font cabinet.  (Does everyone here have a freaking key to the font cabinet?  What kind of security is that?).

    1. Crash when are you going to get your own blog? I’m sure you’d go from zero to 4000 hits a day in no time – mind you, I’d have no time to raise a child because I’d be reading Timblair and the crashblog.

I’d just have to improve my time-management skills.

    1. #5,6 – Please, not the ‘Arabs had flush toilets in 1263’ meme.  Yes, they did a lot, and they preserved certain crucial classical texts for us.  Next time you sit down to drink some al-cohol, before starting a difficult problem in al-gebra, remember where we get those words.  But a word to our Muslim masters: hey guys, thanks for the al-cohol, and those nifty numerals, but while you were out of the room, we had these things called a Re-naissance and an En-lightenment.  Too bad you couldn’t keep up.
