WEEK ONE

Well, week one and a couple of days.

A couple of upgrades await at the new site, including a daring innovation I call a “blogroll”, which lists other sites of interest. It should be added today. Also, moderation has been made speedier – although evidently not speedy enough for many PSRs (previous site readers). Apologies for that, but Australian libel laws are ******* ******* ridiculous and require that each comment be viewed before publication. Incidentally, naughty words will be ******* cut or edited, so don’t ******* use them. And editing the ******* things takes time, which causes delays, which adds to concerns about moderation not being ******* speedy enough.

(Not that many comments have required editing or cutting. Stunningly few, in fact. And the numerous lefties who’ve endlessly complained about being banned here and who vowed to show up in number at the new site simply haven’t appeared. Wimps.)

By the way, your moderators at the new site are Tran and Nkomo, two hard-working young immigrants keen to make careers for themselves in the lucrative Australian moderation caper. A live-and-let-live type of guy, Nkomo is inclined to let even the most contentious comments through. He doesn’t have issues with anybody, God bless him. Nkomo is a Libran who lists cricket and peace as his major interests.

But Tran is absolutely terrifying. The other day, down in the moderation pit, he got into a fight with one of Joe Hildebrand’s nightshift moderators over possessive apostrophes. The ambulance guys said they’d never before seen such elaborate knife wounds.

Thing is, Tran was armed only with a thesaurus. Sharpened, admittedly, but still just a thesaurus.

Treat both of them well. And treat Tran with extreme caution.

Now head on over to the new site.

But we’re still having the wake/s. You can’t stop us.

      It’s too early to think!

    1. wronwright begins cleaning out his cubicle.  He notices many and sundry items purchased from one of paco’s many companies.  All worthless now.  Truth be told, they were worthless when he purchased them new.  Boy those late nite commercials are hard to resist.

He picks up a key, one to the Tardis, entrusted to him several years ago.  Reverently he places it in his cardboard box.

He sees a big yellow sponge, a special one, provided to him by Richard McEnroe for use in sopping up a Russian lake.  Wistfully he notes it didn’t do jack when he tried using it after Hurricane Katrina.  Probably another paco product.

Which brings him to the operators manual to the Japanese weather machine.  Damn useless, that was.  How did he know the OFF button was actually the LET IT BLOW!!! button.  Let Michael Lonie figure out that manual.

Surprised, he finds his Zulu spear, hidden beneath some RWDB plans.

“Ooo, wouldn’t you know.  All this time I blamed Andrea for filching it.  Oh well, my mistake.”

Just then he hears a bell sounding the posting of a comment by Tim.

“Tran?  Treat him with extreme caution?  Tim tells this to a group of people who had to navigate the treacherous shoals of Andrea?  Oh piffle.  Tran was probably in high school when the readers here were posting comments.  Let him learn the art from experienced practioners.”

    1. Yay! Wronwright makes an appearance! You need to stay in touch somewhere, somehow with somebody, buddy; giving up wronwright would be like giving up coffee or beer for most of us (coffee and beer, for many). BTW, I don’t imagine you saved the receipts for all those Paco products? Your problems have “user error” written all over ‘em.

I expect I’ll be starting my own blog, soon; mostly a story and skit dump (including new stuff, of course), with perhaps the occasional timely observation and interesting link. That is, if I can figure out how this blogging thing works. If I ever float the the thing, I’ll post a link; although I guess it’ll have to be soon (I think I saw a “For Sale” sign in the front yard of Tim’s blog).

    1. ppfftt!!  So you have a couple of bouncers and a doorman at your new place.

Sheriff Andrea was the law in our town. Although she was known as the “hangin’ judge”, folks ‘round here respected the Lady Sheriff. She was hard but fair, and she didn’t take all the money in your pockets. She’d leave you enough coin to make sure you dropped a donation in the tin for the “Retired Sheriffs Home”.

Wronwright, I’ve brought some extra boxes. Looks like we’ll be awhile packing everything. Who are you going to donate all this stuff to?

I don’t check it all the time, but I might have to start!I thought about starting up a blog, and quickly thought better of it. I’m a spectator/participant in comments, I don’t have the time for anything else.

    1. So each blog has its own assigned mods. I had noticed a certain liberality at your blog; originally I figured there was just a roomful of people at terminals fielding comments from all over. If you’ve got yourself two perceptive moderators, Tim, well and good.
And the trolls don’t want to play. So sad, but it confirms my theory that the main attraction of timblair.net was the thrill of being banned. They wore the Mark Of Andrea like a medal – even better than getting caned by the headmaster for smoking in the toilets.

As usual some unmusterables, rangy, longhorned types with hides that tough a .223 just bounces orf, resistant to dawgs and disease, continue to hang around the ridges coming out in the late afternoon to drink.

These types ignore the choppers and the silly sirens. Men on horses are observed from afar and just giggled at.

I suspect they’ll have to be shot out.

Global warming is now changing environment: study PRINT FRIENDLY EMAIL STORY
      The World Today – Thursday, 15 May , 2008 12:19:00
      Reporter: Jennifer Macey
ELEANOR HALL: Around the world, glaciers are melting, flowers are blooming out of season and hibernating animals are waking up earlier than they used to.

Now for the first time scientists are making a direct link between these changes and global warming.

A report in the journal Nature suggests that human-induced climate change is having an impact on the natural environment much earlier than scientists had predicted.

But while the evidence from North America and Europe is overwhelming, there’s a gap in the research coming from Australia, as Jennifer Macey reports.

Yeah.  Sure an open check book without any ‘competition’ – a scientist’s dream. I think it is pretty safe to say the call will be ignored, as it should be irrespective of the politics.

    1. #27 Wand, I watched it and agree that it was good.
My impression was that he was just sticking it to the Rudd government for their hypocrisy on climate change.
His point was the contrast between Rudd’s flowery promises at Bali, and Swan’s effectively killing the Australian solar power industry by means-testing the solar panel grants.
He wasn’t really saying that something must be done about climate change.I thought it was a well-written speech and well presented. He handled the usual dopey questions from the media effectively.
The grabs on tonight’s news will reflect none of that, of course.

    1. #66 Stevo, I saw on earlier news that someone had bet $700,000 on the Toads to win. Wonder how he is feeling.
And this post makes my total 1362. Just thought you would all like to know that.
I can remember Margo’s Maid used to congratulate everyone as they hit their 1000 and I looked forward to it happening for me.
Not a word from the Maid when I hit 1000.
Sniff. Don’t you know what that can do to a fellow’s self esteem?

      Skeeter

Love the name, reminds me of Skeeter of Cartoon Corner.

If you have $700K to bet, you should be able to lose it.  Pocket money for some.  Just searching my wallet, I have $30 in it.  Feeling flush with funds!

    1. Hi paco, Pogria, kae, Skeeter and all,

wronwright is being retired.  He’s been given a gold watch and a nice pension by the VRWC.  He plans to take the Tardis on a nice long vacation to Mesopotamia.

I’ll be sure to read Tim’s new blog and certainly any that paco creates.

      Best wishes to you all.

I made my first post on the other site yesterday; shall probably transition into using my real name there.  “Anne B. aka Sonetka’s Mom,’’ that sort of thing, and eventually drop the screen name.  You’ll know me by the Chicago dateline anyway.

Maybe I’ll take over GENCO OLIVE OIL and sell them that way. I hope that’s not one of paco’s companies.

And The Conester must really believe the audience all have long pink ears- the most “interesting” questions were selected from thousands, and the Waxmuncher hadn’t seen any of them. We’re supposed to believe the most stage-managed pipsqueak ever to befoul national office ever does ANYTHING off the cuff? He wouldn’t have a shit unless he’d issued a press release and had his flacks scan the dunny for derogatory grafitti beforehand.

There really are some gerbils in the studio audience though- I reckon they’ve got a pen somewhere, and just shuttle them around in a solar bus between Gore Hill and SBS when they’re taping Insight– they’re really can’t be enough old, ugly hippies who applaud at any mention of “alternative energy”, hoot and gibber at a mention of the evil Howard regime and laugh like loons at the merest mention of Brendan Nelson to fill the audiences of these mutual fellatio sessions on a continually rotational basis.

And the resemblance between Tone and Kev is indeed disturbing- haven’t seen Cones scoffing his own secretions though.

Wooaah– Kev was getting ambushed by militant tailgunners on the left and reffo cuddlers on the right, and seriously looking like losing his shit- Snowy came to his rescue by steering it back to a plant about a bill or rights, followed by a dingbat who wants to allow perverts back to having free reign in the NT, in order to stick it up evil JWH. The assembled gibbon hooted their support, by when Waxy expressed mild support for applying law and order among indigines there was a smattering of applause and much derision.

Not going so well for the Mucus Muncher- the dementoleft love the idea of Anyone But Howard, but short of Bob Brown with an autoteller on his back anyone’s going to find it a tough audience.

While a mental image of Tim wielding a bull whip over the two of them is delicious, the reality is they probably mumble something about having forgotten to wash their hands as they amble back outside for another smoke.

Moment of the night was when Fearless Leader was snorking on about the perfidy, inaction, waste and iniquity of the previous administration while his evil clone twin who flunked out of pinying school stood at his lectern, his pointy head nodding like a bobble-headed novelty dog on the rear parcel shelf of an EK Holden traversing the Lang Lang test track at speed. 1. Kae, Habib,

I’ve been looking through the “A Guide to Brisbane Pubs”, and have decided that August is the time to come up for a visit.  They’re going to be holding the Second Annual Birthing Championships at the Brekky Creek. After the enormous popularity of the inaugural competition, particularly as it was well timed to coincide with Sailor’s Leave from visiting warships, sailors make great cheer squads, it was decided to make it an annual event.
They’ve also added another two events to the card. Because a lot of pub goers are still upset over the banning of Dwarf Tossing, there’s going to be a Placenta into the Esky toss, to be followed directly by the Dodge the Ambo in the Carpark run. A literal triathlon of human endurance!
I’m excited!! When I lived up there over twenty years ago, Brisbane was a boring place. It seems to have livened up a tad.

THERE’S no need to be scared of sharks when you’re in the Northern Territory – the crocs usually get to them first. Paul van Bruggen snapped these amazing pictures of a 2.5m saltie dining out on a shark on the banks of the Daly River, The Northern Territory News reports … Mr van Bruggen said the crocodile knew exactly what it was doing, dragging the shark on to unfamiliar dry land before finishing off its prey.

That’s Hugo, one of MarkL’s pets.  He’s very smart and very very dangerous.  I often find him following me around but MarkL claims he’s just trying to be a good minion.  But I don’t trust him!  Nor the crocodile.

I’m not complaining.  I’m just saying it’s little wonder that people are comfortable sitting around in an empty room, drinking beer (by the way, where did that come from?), and lollygagging.

It would appear that the movers have already come and moved Tim’s furniture, personal effects, and yes, the beer out.  It makes me wonder how long will it be until he sends security over to arrest the people here.  Especially those who seem to have set up cots and coolers brought in eskies.

    1. Epic of the Exodus:
      Arctic Penguins
      Remember the Man
      Long ago we penguins lived
      At both Poles, North and South;
      But up north, we disappeared
      Into the White Bear’s mouth.

      He loved his Penguin Tartare,
      It was his daily dish;
When our cousins all were gone,
      He turned to eating fish.

We were safe, a world away,
      That’s what we were thinking,
‘Til we heard the rumor that
      White Bear’s pole was shrinking.

      Warming cultists made a pact,
They would save the White Bear,
      They believed our refuge was
      Quite big enough to share.

      The vast Greenpeace armada
      And White Bear headed south;
      Each day, despairing penguins
      Grew closer to his mouth.

      Our elders counselled panic,
      Each penguin face was grim,
And then the cold mist parted,
And then we all saw Him.

      Single file, we marched aboard
      His rafts, and then set forth;
Headed for our new refuge –
      In the bear-less North.

      A million happy penguins
      Passed the puzzled White Bear,
      Waving flippers at Greenpeace
Who stopped, in shock, to stare.

If White Bear can’t eat penguins,
      He’ll eat some other meat;
      Goodbye Warming cultists,
      Goodbye Greenpeace fleet.

Penguins live a good life now,
      And owe it all to Him;
He only gave his first name:
We know him as Mad Tim.

      I know what Tim said:

Apologies for that, but Australian libel laws are ******* ******* ridiculous and require that each comment be viewed before publication. Incidentally, naughty words will be ******* cut or edited, so don’t ******* use them. And editing the ******* things takes time, which causes delays, which adds to concerns about moderation not being ******* speedy enough.

The news from both commanders about progress and security in Iraq are irrefutable and contradict the logic for withdrawal that has been flaunted by Democrats for the past several years and we all know how liberals in the media want this war to end.  Even Democrats on the committee were docile, agreeable and non-confrontational.”

  8. Just a reminder for those of you, who like me, only have access to SOHO computer.

I have a download limit of 4GB on DSL2 and never exceeded the limit, except last month.

Checked it, and News Ltd sites are the reason for my extra usage.

Both Bolta and Tim have an extensive use of ads on their blogs with lots of graphics, which have to load and unload every time you switch windows. (very poor web design practice, only the relevant section should change not the whole page!!)

This not only slows the site down but adds to your band with use.

In contrast this site takes about a fifth of band width to load!
(of course if you follow every Utube link it will add up here as well but that’s a choice!)

Orion, it’s hard for people with limited download and slow speeds. I have unlimited downloads with my ISP, but it’s not fast ADSL, so sometimes I can’t look at video links because they’re too slow to play properly, and if you can’t pause them and let them download in the background while you do something else (not on the net though), I quite often don’t bother.

  14. #8 Orion: There is another problem that I am starting suspect is the fault of the News Ltd site. I use Firefox and have been taking full of advantage of the tabs, leaving lots of them running as I open each thread in its own tab. Lately, I have had so many slow downs and stalls, mouse not responding and that sort of thing, that I opened the Performance tab in the Task Manager to try and hunt down the cause. CPU usage was steady at about 64% just coping with background stuff and PF Usage was also very high.
I closed the browser and everything returned to normal.
So, heeding your warning on usage, I have just checked and I’m already 50% over my monthly data allowance with a week to go.
Never been in that usage situation before.
No more browsing News Ltd sites for me.

  15. #14 Skeeter, I find the mouse stops responding for a few seconds on Bolta’s site as well. It even happens with javascript and plug-ins turned off, so it’s just bad design on their part. I must admit I’ve never looked at how much is downloaded from there – I had assumed it was just due to watching old movies and programs on youtube and google.

  16. News Ltd blogs have always been a bit slow, but they’ve gotten much worse in the past few months.

  17. I noticed the same thing with Firefox the other day – I normally have up to 20 tabs open, but the whole thing grinds to a halt with just 2 or 3 News Ltd threads open.  A restart of the browser quickly becomes necessary.  And yes, my mouse has frozen too for short periods.

Sorry Tim, but it sucks.  It blows.  It sucks and blows.  The message is as good as usual, but the medium is bollocks.

And don’t get me started on the moderation delay.  The next ice age will hit us in less time than it takes to get some comments published.

  81. #81 kae,
Just got home and checked the blog, (THIS one)!reading your post, logged in to Tim’s new site, Previously it took just under 1 MB to log in (it’s a lot), now it’s less than 60 KB!!!!
Incidentally it takes less bandwith to stay logged in than to get out and in again on any site, if one has limited download keep it in mind!
Also there is a certain “Upload”, going from your comp. every time one connects to a site, cookies etc. which counts as far as the ISP. is concerned, as a matter of fact the upload limit is far far less than the download, but unless you use a peer to peer programme it’s of no big deal.

In addition, I think we have to take into account, how much clout Tim really has!?
He achieved a lot in a few days and HE IS GOOD, but News Ltd is BIG, so I hate to say this, but should we not pull back a bit, and let Tim get organised!?Cheers

  85. #85 kae,
Sure, I know it’s feed back, and if we don’t tell them they won’t know!I just thought I let people know, that he listens and tries!

I am not defending News Ltd or Tim for that matter, because I have cause to be annoyed, at least with the moderators.

I shot off a reply in defense of 1.6, that was never published, I think because it was critical of Tim’s last column. As far as I’m concerned that was a dud! 1.6 only called it “lame”.

If you have to genuflect and tug your forelock, every time Tim writes a column, (and I like most of them!!) sorry I’m not interested commenting in his blog!

At least Bolta will publish most, if not all posts, whether critical of him or not!

PS. I hardly ever comment anyway, so, being ignored, is twice as hurtful!

    5th-6th July, 1918] PEACEFUL PENETRATION-SOMME 339
    link
The 6th (Victoria) Brigade was to be relieved next day by the 5th (N. S. Wales), and, during the night while the Victorian garrisons were digging and settling into the new positions, the advance parties of the New South Welsh battalions (a few representatives of each company and of battalion headquarters) arrived at the front. Next morning one of the incomers, Sergt. Walter Brown 5 of the 20th Battalion, was walking round the trench seized by Weir’s party when a sergeant of the 21st, with whom he was hobnobbing, told him that his men were still being troubled by German snipers in some position close “over there.” After waiting in vain for half an hour for these Germans to disclose themselves by firing another shot, Brown walked on along the empty trench saying that he would see if he could “have a pot at them” himself. The trench soon became shallow, and seventy yards across the open, in the direction which the Victorian sergeant had indicated, he saw a mound. Presently a shot was fired, apparently from the mound. Guessing that this place was the source of the trouble. Brown decided to go out to it. He dropped his rifle, picked up two Mills bombs, and ran towards it. As he went another shot was fired-he was not sure whether he was the target. He stopped and threw a bomb at the mound, hoping that it would kill or scare any Germans there while he made his rush, but it fell short. Dropping down in some broken ground, he waited to see what would happen. As several minutes passed

    5 Sg t. W. E. Brown, V C., D.C M. (No. 1689. 20th Bn and NX35, 492; 2nd/15th Fld. Reg,, A.I.F., 1940). Grocer; of Hobart, Tas., and Petersham, N S.W., b. New Norfolk, Tas., 2 July 1885.

    340 THE A.I.F. IN FRANCE 16th July, 1918

and the place remained without sound or movement, he got up and ran to it.
He found himself standing over one end of a small, kidney-shaped trench, empty, but with the entrance of a dugout gaping towards him at its far end and a machine-gun standing on the parados in the middle, its belt trailing from the breech. Brown jumped into the trench and ran to reach the dugout entrance before any one could emerge. As he reached it a German appeared in the entrance and began to step from it. Brown swung a blow at his jaw, and the German, crying “Kamerad” as it struck him, was knocked down the stair. Brown backed to the machine-gun, holding his only bomb ready to throw. At this moment, probably hearing movement behind him, he turned and received a surprise: at the other end of the trench, where he had jumped in, was another dugout entrance and Germans just emerging from it. He could not throw his bomb, for when it had burst he would have been at the mercy of the survivors. He therefore held it threateningly-and they at once put up their hands. He ordered them to pass out over the parapet, which they did, scowling, while he perforce kept turning his head so as to watch first one entrance and then the other. Thirteen Germans in all emerged and trotted across to the Australian line, some German post opening with a machinegun as they went, and Brown following the prisoners, bomb in hand. The Victorians took charge of them. Presently German shells began to burst around.

Actually Brown had captured an officer and twelve men of the 137th I.R. (108th Divn.). They belonged to its I Bn. and on the day of the Hamel attack had been holding the support-line posts. After that battle these posts found themselves to be the front line. The one captured by Brown appears to have been subsequently thrust farther forward; it had not been rationed since the battle, and the spirit of its garrison was low.

  190. The great escape my arse! That tunnel digging was chickenshit compared to this. This tunnel will be the death of me – but not before I have the mead! 210 metres from the neighbouring blog to here, and now I’ve come up against this concrete wall!

Starting the tunnel at the neighbouring blog seemed like a simple plan but I underestimated how humiliating it is to masquerade as lefty! That was actually worse than when I encountered the sewer pipe at 89 metres.

The stuff that came out of that in a hurry was a disgusting backlog of Miranda Divide’s comments, mixed with what Bryla passes for humour!

I’ve also run out of canaries. Who’d a thought they’d be so expensive. And tasty.

And now to top it all off, it looks like I need explosives. Aahh well, only one place to get explosives on the cheap. I’ll have to visit the “males of no appearance gang” or the “men of a diverse range of backrounds.” They’ll hook me up.

  201. OK, here’s a comment just for the old team, inspired by an LGF entry:
The big item on the ABC’s “let’s score one for the left” news tonight was about Scott McClellan, former White House spokes-wheel-person. He’s just been published in a whole book, saying that the Iraq war was a fraud, a sell-job. Well, you know money talks all languages, and sure enough someone has turned up some interesting connections to the money-fountainhead, none other than Georgie-boy.

    Margos and Penguin,

A good time was had by all. You were missed. There will be more opportunities to meet as we have decided to form a Company of Blairheads so that we may turn the fine sport of Extreme Troll Hunting into a television reality show.

As everyone at the gathering is a Dentist by profession,
we can’t show you their faces.

The place has been ransacked, and lots of stuff is missing – souvenired no doubt. And there’s backhoe tracks all over the place – and little test trenches through everything.

I’m sure Tim took the mead with him.

  231. wronwright quietly enters Tim’s old blog.  He stops.  And thinks.

Damn it, where is it?  I know it’s still here.  I checked every box and every single article when they were being loaded onto a Daily Telegraph truck and I didn’t see one keg.  So it’s got to be here.

Oh gee whiz.  It’s come down to this.  Okay, fine, I’ll try this.  paco sold me this so called “alien technology” device for $999.99.  I told him “a thousand bucks, are you nuts?”.  And he just replied “no, no, my good friend, it’s not a thousand.  I would never charge you a thousand dollars”.  Well, it’s a penny away from a thousand.  But still, desperate times call for desperate measures and I’m desperate to get to that Sumerian mead.  As I recall, it’s the stuff we filched from Urak, circa 3200 BC.  Good, really good stuff.

Hmmm, how does one work this thing?  Alien my ass.  It looks like one of those hand held devices on the original Star Trek series.  What were they called?  I bet Michael Lonie knows the name.  He’s watched every episode 40 times.  And that’s before he graduated from high school.

    * beep * beep * beep * burrrr * burrrr *

Hmmm.  I think I might have found something.
