    1. Memories of Japan.

I walked into a bar that was a favored hangout for the “50s” dudes.

Brillcreamed hair in a ducks ass. White tee shirts with a pack of smokes rolled up in a sleeve at the shoulder (even if they didn’t smoke).
Straight legged Levis rolled at the cuffs just so.

Pointy toed boots and biker jackets slung over the chairs.

Mounted to the wall above where the leaders of the pack sat was…
A large metal sign. Industrial yellow color with a black border. A large red skull and crossbones in the center. Above the skull was LIVE HARD. Below the crossbones was DIE YOUNG. Below that was CREAM SODA.

It was a fun place to hang out.

But, we really shouldn’t mock them. In a 1000 years, Japan will be the only place on earth were a person can go to see a genuine Elvis Impersonator.

It’ll be called something like an Eruimpenah. And no one will remember what it’s meant to be about. And it will be considered high art of the most traditional kind. But it will be a nearly exact rendition of what’s done today.

There’ll even be a heretical sect that believes that in order to be a real Eruimpenah, you must put on about 30 lbs of additional belly weight and only wear sequined jumpsuits.

    1. It’s silly season at the ABC -in their own peculiar ideological way:
I’ve seen the usual TV program debunking the Bible and repudiating the story of Jesus, based merely on prejudice and the BBC.
Last night it was naive nature religion radio preaching – Eco-fundamentalism at full bore in several senses.
Professor Mohawk of NY State U. [I kid you not] informed us that we all lost true human culture when we stopped being hunters and gatherers and became farmers.  He intoned: ‘Corn, it turns out, is quite a mystical plant’.  ‘Relationships with intelligent plants’ is vital for us all.

Listen for 2 minutes and it sounds like a parody, but it’s called ‘Revolution From the Heart of Nature’.

The ABC default position is to hate most aspects of our Western Christian tradition…
Have a joyous Christmas, and brush up on your
      pagan fundamentalism….

Spent some time in Tokyo in 94/95, there used to be a place called Hirajiku (sp?) where once a month they closed off the street and had markets and stuff. And a big mob of shit Elvis bands and other “Happy Days” type stuff.

It was fundamentally awful, but very funny in a Japanese way.

      MY WISHES!

      To All My Democrat Friends:
Please accept with no obligation, implied or explicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2008, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere. Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee.

      To My Republican Friends:
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Toby’s doing great.  He sits, he comes when called and he’s house trained.  Also, he’s a big smoodger.

In other news, I found my convicts.  Two of them.  One was a 19 year old pickpocket caught trying to steal a handkerchief worth 2s.  He was transported to Tasmania for life in 1833.  Makes you think, doesn’t it?  I bet his first Christmas here wasn’t much fun.

The woman he married was transported in 1838.  Haven’t found out what she did yet.

    1. #58: I have to say there’s a lot there I agree with. I keep waiting for the Libs here in Victoria to expose the planned desalination plant for the expensive white elephant it is and promise to build Melbourne the dam that was promised 30 years ago on the Mitchell….but nothing…not even chirping crickets. I do not know what they stand for, as it seems they take this ‘shadow cabinet’ business a little too literally for my taste. I keep hoping they’ll come good – but how many more years?

      THAT is controversial?
Only in the world SBS inhabits…
Their listing for the 25th is the only free-to-air of 6 to have NO programs at all about the day itself…

      Pogria:

A promise made to one is a promise made to all.

I just made that up but I expect to have it ratified and passed through the Committee on Proper Behavioral Protocols and Oath Management before noon tomorrow.

Until then I may be forced to obey the dictates of my spell checker and redub you Peoria.

If you were referring to Peoria smelling as sweet…

I wouldn’t know. Never been there. It’s in Illinois, so I assume it’d smell a bit on the industrial side.

Dunno about the bush link, it’s an email address.
The hitler one shows that Will Smith needs a whack with the clue bat, and the table top followthrough, as described by Pogs here.
Hitler loved furry animals and was a vegetarian. He didn’t mean to implement the “final solution”.

      Will Smith is an idiot.

I also thought it BRILLIANT that an artist like he, was lauded by the average folk, instead of being accused of warmongering and political INcorrectness.

I’ve saved it. I want to watch it again and again. I also want to subject people weaker than myself to it, over and over again.

    1. #139 Pogria – Well to tell you the awful truth (and a family secret) my father was born of fine German stock who named their children with Anglo Saxon names, albeit many are probably germanic in origin.

That worked well for his 10 siblings… and then for some reason, a regression happened and Dad was named “Franz Gotlieb”. So! long story short, the missing “t” was lost somewhere in Gramps education. 🙂

  1. Right! Now it’s off to my wife’s parents for a traditional Sri Lankan (Burgher) Christmas Lunch.

Her mom makes exquisite pan rolls, fish balls, and a pork curry that you simply cannot stop eating—made from tender, fatty belly meat, with fresh ground and roasted spices. It will remind you for days that you ate it…but even knowing this, you can’t stop, you just can’t stop.

As you eat it, piling in more saffron rice, yoghurt, and the occasional slab of honey glazed ham, her old man goes to the cupboard, pulls out a few bottles, squints at them, puts two back and triumphantly presents his “three drops yer dead” Sri Lankan home-made hot sauce.

I remember the day I got his blessing to marry his daughter—I’d poured about two tablespoons of his best onto the side of the plate and dipped every bite into it, saying in that impolite, sort of muffled way you do when talking whilst eating—“Man, this is good! Wow, this is really good! Man!”

He presented me with a bottle and his daughter that same day…

I am so glad I pigged out at dinner last night.

Stomach is stretched and I am sooooo ready!

    Merry Christmas one and all!
