MONEY GROWS ON TREES
The SMH’s Mark Coultan compares offset scams:
Under the Qantas scheme, I could pay $23.18 to assuage my guilt. I could do the same thing with British Airways, but it would cost me $44.
Elementree promises to plant 15 trees for me at a cost of $37.50. Carbonneutral.com.au says it will take 47 trees to compensate for the emissions from my flight, at a cost of $126.49.
Trees mainly grow without any human assistance, by the way. For free. It’s a well-known fact.
