LEUNIG'S NEW FANS
Iranian cartoonists like Mike.
UPDATE. Leunig’s cartoon has apparently been removed. May have a further update later.
UPDATE II. Le Monde reports Leunig’s entry (via a wily prankster) in the Iranian Holocaust Cartoon Fest. Here’s a Altavista translation:
The site explains why this first caricature on the Holocaust was sent by certain a Michael Leunig, living in Melbourne, in Australia, “by solidarity with the Moslem world and to exert its freedom of expression”. This last, which says being caricaturist, explains “to have had difficulties in publish this drawing in its own country” and hopes, if the drawing is published, that that “will clarify the hypocrisy of the Occident vis-a-vis at the freedom of expression”. No independent confirmation was however obtained on the voluntary participation of the famous draughtsman.
It acts of a series of two drawings. In the first, heading Auschwitz 1942, one sees a Jew, carrying star of David and a bundle, entering the concentration camp by the surmounted gate of the inscription “work brings freedom”. In the second, heading Israel 2002, the same man, carrying this time a rifle, moves towards the gate of what resembles a battle field, with the inscription “the war brings peace”.
