Pope was in Hitler Youth—The Age. That’s the headline captured by Google; it’s since been changed by The Age to “Local Jews dismiss Pope’s Nazi link”.
In Germany, mood is hardly one of celebration—The Independent. Much sadness: “Liberal Germany reacted with a collective sigh of dismay yesterday to the news of Cardinal Ratzinger’s election as the first German pope for more than 400 years.”
New Pope’s Past Leaves Some Jews Uneasy—WBAL. The only Jew quoted in the story, Art Abramson, the leader of the Baltimore Jewish Council, isn’t left uneasy at all: “I discovered that this is a man who has been a great friend to the Jewish people and was instrumental in ensuring that there would be reconciliation with the Jews and that Israel would receive full diplomatic recognition from the Vatican.” But teenagers in Philadelphia are acting like journalists or something:
