“YOU ARE AN IDIOT”
A strongly-worded opinion on Sydney racism … from someone who has never been to Sydney.
I left a comment for her at her site:
Sorry to rain on your thought parade, Michele, but Australians simply don’t use the language that Kunthea described. There are none, nil, nada, zip that talk that way. The way the comments were claimed to have been framed sounds more Anglo-European to me, which Tim pointed out. It would be the same for a black Australian to go to the USA and then claim to have been calld a ‘coon’. Wouldn’t have any credibility.
Posted by Jack Lacton on 2007 01 08 at 10:45 PM • permalinkAccording to the site, Michele is a
Young conservative woman
I’ll buy the “woman” bit, and possibly the “young” (if the light’s right). But there’s no way I’m buying the “conservative”. There are a few of these so-called conservatives on the web. I call them ‘cinos (Conservatives in Name Only - pronounced chee-noh, as in cappuccino, their beverage of choice).
The giveaway is their breathless rush to mirror leftist orthodoxy. Kunthea Ker said racism? It must be true. ‘Cos only whities lie or exaggerate!

Fair dinkum, he’s got a few kangaroos loose in the top paddock and no mistake, silly as a two-bob watch. Bastard wouldn’t know if you were up him with an armful of chairs- bloody hell, wouldn’t know you were up him with a tram ‘til you rang the bell. What a drongo, a dill, no, make that a dag.
Her comments are so devoid of facts or actual knowledge of which she speaks who could possibly take here seriously?
Bryan Law obviously would, but we expect no less.
Posted by curious george on 2007 01 08 at 11:15 PM • permalinkInteresting point Mongrel. Brayan Law (I thought he died? Unless it’s a gee-up) proves our point thus:
You don’t have to visit Sydney to understand that racism is virulent in Australia (and sooo hard to transform).
Racism is everywhere and in Australia’s case is likely to be in the form of a few epiphets such as ‘slope’ or ‘slant-eyed….’
However, there is a view amongst white liberals that the only people possibly capable of racism are whites, which is a racist notion in itself. Hence the ‘Chino’s’ subtext of ‘what Asian would do such a thing’‘family’ and all that?
She needs to travel more, a lot more. I suggest she start in Japan.
As many have already observed, the original story simply doesn’t hang together. It doesn’t fit in with behaviour patterns or language idiosyncrasies I’ve observed in Sydney, where I’ve spent the bulk of my adult life.
That’s the point of the original posting. Not whether racial sledging ever occurs.
And to imply that Australia is broadly anti-Asian is just plain ignorant. Some people are simply dickheads. They don’t need any special ethnicity to be identified. And like-minded dickheads always seem willing to step up on the podium with them.
Kunthea kicked that Aussie redneck’s drunken ass in front of his white supremacist countrymen until he was forced to flee into the crowd!
It does sort of fire up a certain type of “conservative” imagination, I suppose. Let’s chant “USA! USA!” while I cue up the theme song from “Team America”...
Don’t Mess with Texas. Or Swarthmore.
I am an American. I have been to Sydney. Kunthea’s story stinks as much as does Michelle’s asinine outrage.
Once again, I wish to sign a “not in my name” petition distancing myself from this faux conservative. For the record, we get these kinds of conservatives writing outraged letters to the editors in US papers - Republican all their lives, yadayadayada, BUT… insert lefty boilerplate argument here. My father finds it amusing when he spots the names of lefty acquaintances attached to the letters.

Her claim that someone shouted “I hate Chinese”, however, may be. It might have happened when all 5 feet of her was bashing up the bystander. Both Kunthea and Michele may not be familiar with the (very) dry sense of humour in Australia - there’s a well-known radio commercial in Australia which has the constant refrain “I like Chinese, I like Chinese”.
Also, I am still wondering at Kunthea’s reference to “other Asians in the crowd”. Did it ever occur to her that they just might be Australians?
Since 9/11, there have also been several American and Canadian anti-Muslim racist graffiti, Koran desecrations etc. on e.g. university campuses that have been found to have been perpetrated by the aggrieved Muslim complainant.

A ‘street person’ staggers on and sits across from me. After being quiet for a minute he yells out ‘I hate Chinese’ several times, aimed at a couple of young Chinese girls sitting next to me.
This being NYC, at least a half dozen people told him to STFU. He left for another car for a repeat I assume.
Why would Sydney be any different than a city not known for it’s gentle and retiring denizens.
She’s conservative, huh? And I’m the Queen of Spain.
By the way, I’m an American, I’ve never been to Sydney, but I think that I’d believe the observations of someone who actually lives there over the rantings of a “creative writing major” who obviously has a chip on her shoulder, and who is also full of shit. For one thing, I find it hard to believe this Kunthea Ker was able to fight off the fearsome white racist Australians. It’s more likely that she was already in a mood (booze, pills, PMS) and misunderstood something an Australian said to her (she wouldn’t have been the first American to be totally confused by an accent—“but—but Crocodile Dundee didn’t sound like that!”), and went into hysterics.

SO here’s my comment:
Michele, I’m a conservative, I read Tim Blair regularly….and I passed up commenting on that post strictly because I’ve never been to Australia, let alone Sydney.
OTOH, if I had to venture a guess, I’d point out some incidents of manufactured racism in the United States (take your pick just which way), and Say, “How do you know Kunthea didn’t lie? A warm and fuzzy feelng deep inside? Or are there facts that you haven’t presented in your post?”
Let me also point out that, in all seriousness, having Bryan Law (AKA Bryla, a leftie well known to the folks at the Blair Blog) on your side is emphatically not a point in your favor. Quite the opposite.
You might want to read this for an example of Bryla’s, er, “logic”.
And in addition to that, I want to point out to Michele that hate crime hoaxes are all too well known. Y’know, a bona fide fact, and not “truthiness”.

Can’t be bothered adapting these lyrics, but very apt all the same. Especially spoken word bit.
I’ve Never Been To Me
( Charlene )Hey lady, you lady, cursing at your life
You’re a discontented mother and a regimented wife
I’ve no doubt you dream about the things you’ll never do
But, I wish someone had talked to me
Like I wanna talk to you…..Oh, I’ve been to Georgia and California and anywhere I could run
I took the hand of a preacher man and we made love in the sun
But I ran out of places and friendly faces because I had to be free
I’ve been to paradise but I’ve never been to mePlease lady, please lady, don’t just walk away
‘Cause I have this need to tell you why I’m all alone today
I can see so much of me still living in your eyes
Won’t you share a part of a weary heart that has lived million lies….Oh, I’ve been to Niece and the Isle of Greece while I’ve sipped champagne on a yacht
I’ve moved like Harlow in Monte Carlo and showed ‘em what I’ve got
I’ve been undressed by kings and I’ve seen some things that a woman ain’t supposed to see
I’ve been to paradise, but I’ve never been to me[spoken]
Hey, you know what paradise is?
It’s a lie, a fantasy we create about people and places as we’d like them to be
But you know what truth is?
It’s that little baby you’re holding, it’s that man you fought with this morning
The same one you’re going to make love with tonight
That’s truth, that’s love…...Sometimes I’ve been to crying for unborn children that might have made me complete
But I took the sweet life, I never knew I’d be bitter from the sweet
I’ve spent my life exploring the subtle whoring that costs too much to be free
Hey lady…...
I’ve been to paradise, (I’ve been to paradise)
But I’ve never been to me(I’ve been to Georgia and California, and anywhere I could run)
I’ve been to paradise, never been to me
(I’ve been to Neice and the isle of Greece while I’ve sipped champagne on a yacht)
I’ve been to paradise, never been to me
(I’ve been to cryin’ for unborn children that might have made me complete)
I’ve been to paradise, never been to me
(I’ve been to Georgia and California, and anywhere I could run)

Me thinks there has also been some artistic license in regard to the retelling of the event - Our little she warrior beating off the native white savages… more like - she gets shoved, goes ballistic at assumed male shover, male shover shrugs and wanders off and finds somewhere else to squeeze in. - A typical Australian behaviour is to find the path of least resistance rather than stand ones ground and fight over something trivial. We Aussies are generally easy going and are not going to nuts over the little things - It is something that makes us uniquely Australian.
Meanwhile, little she warrior goes off with a bee in her bonnet and feels the need to write something that, in her mindset, allows her to justify her actions and seek pity from others at the same time.
The context of HER story has been reframed in a such a manner that elements of the confrontation do not reflect the typical signature lexicon of an Australian but that of a “straw man” racist figment of she-warrior’s fantasy.Posted by CanberraNeoCon on 2007 01 09 at 01:08 AM • permalinkI don’t know about you, but I was at the Sydney NYE fireworks and when I first saw the huge illuminated question mark on the bridge I immediately thought….question mark…is like a hook….like a hook nose…hey those bastards are being anti semitic!
It was also implicitly racist to set off fireworks without any salute to China as they invented gunpowder!
As for the giant coathanger that lit up later on, obviously that was a direct reference by the patriarchal, sexist right to life movement to smear the pro-choicers!
Are you blind!! I tried to get the corwd around me to see the racist and sexist messages, but they thought I was being paranoid.

Albert is Hong Kong Chinese.
Albert bought a tee-shirt with all these horrified little Chinese heads poking up out of the snow.
The caption read: Ski The Slopes.
Albert thought it was the greatest joke.
He wore it with pride.
We all laughed ourselves sick about it.Some people better get a fucking life - quick!
People’s perceptions of racism are often distorted by the lense of their personal politics.
In my younger days, the early 1980s, I worked as a storeman for a large chain hardware store in the suburbs of Melbourne (Victoria not Florida). We all went off for a Christmas party at a club at which a female singer was (badly) singing 70s Motown hits - it was the 80s and we considered her boring and she was heckled unmercifully.
She became extremely abusive and accused us of inexcusable racism - it was only when she started speaking that we realised that she was African-American (she had sounded that way while singing, but that was expected when singing Motown). Her skin was lighter in colour than most of the Italians, Maltese or Indians in our group under the lights her skin looked lighter than mine - the idea that she considered herself “black” was frankly ludicrous in an Australian context (I only found out about the US “one drop” idea in the 1990s).
She could not see any possible reason for anybody to not like her singing except for racism - the very possibility that people found her music irrelevant and boring did not enter her head.
Reading the article at the top of this thread I came away with the impression that the woman complaining focussed on racism as the only possible explanation for the fact that people objected to what she was doing - her perception and reality may be unrelated.
Look, it’s gotto be said. I’ve known people,
educated and accomplished people, who attribute every disappointment in life (the raise denied, the promotion unforthcoming, etc.) to nothing but racism. And be convinced of it.And here I’ll lean out into the thin, whippy twigs of the tree of fellowship. I’ve also noted similar lamentations, but of sexism, from various of the gentler sex of my acquaintance. That is, similarly accomplished and successful people, too.
*crickets*
Sure, Australians are racist. When I was at an Australian rules football game, I was (oddly) wearing a Wales National Rugby jersey. An Australian came up to me and said, “fuck off, mate.” As an American of Welsh descent, it was obvious to me this was a comment motivated by race.
Boooo, racist Australians.
Aussies are frightful racists. Cop this:
Apart from being shoved in the back by a family of asians for the full 20 mins of the midnight NYE display for the racist crime of being taller than them and obscuring their view (my letter to Fairfax is in advanced draft stage), my highlight of the (overrated) Sydney Harbour cracker night was a young drunk aussie teenager. He and his mates had irritated some poms by trying to squeeze past them amidst the frustrated ‘millieu’ who’d been camped there since early in the afternoon. After being told to shove off by the poms, he yelled out as he walked past “at least we’re not effing useless pommy bastards and getting smashed in the cricket, f@ggots!!”
As the last word left his lips, an arm reached out of the crowd and grabbed the kid by the neck. The arm was attached to a hitherto hidden, barrel-like englishman who proceeded, with his mate, to give the kid a touch-up, in full view of half a dozen coppers.
Maybe the soap dodgers aren’t so good with pen and paper…
Basically, there are 3 camps here.
Camp 1. Those who believe her. This group subscribe to the stereotype that Australia is a racist place and this story fulfils that stereotype.
Camp 2. Those who don’t believe her. Main thesis here is that a truly racist Australian would have used a more colloquial word than “Asian”. This explanation fulfils the stereotype that the SMH has a leftist anti-Australian slant.
The majority of people fit into Camps 1 or 2.
I subscribe to Camp 3.
Camp 3. Who gives a rats toss about some hypersensitive tourist?
Likely explanation?
She was in an extremely crowded situation (over a million people on the Sydney Harbour foreshore on NYE) and had an altercation with someone. Their profile? Probably not overtly racist, but who nonetheless wanted to offend. After all, there are far worse things she could have been called.
They’re both morons. Who waits for hours to watch fireworks?
But Tim, you weren’t just calling shenanigans on somebody’s story, you were denying racism exists. Kunty’s got your number.

It sounds very authentic, with her reference to being accompanied by her friend, the noble Aborigine, and his pet kangaroo. And their visit to the eucalyptus tree to see their pal, Kelly the Kuola. And their joy being cruelly interrupted by the white Australian men wearing hats with the side brims turned up, all brandishing boomerangs. It sounds very Australian, it has to be true.

Posted by AlburyShifton on 2007 01 09 at 07:29 AM • permalinkHi,
Michele reporting to you from down the Racist Mine in the territory of New South Wales, Australia.
There’s so much wildlife here, even in these dark depths, you’d be amazed. An occasional phosphorescent firework lights my way as I traverse the galleries of this fantasyland. Here there are all sorts of vicious creatures hiding in the dark, and ... ooh, look at this large pillar holding up the tons of rock.
It bears an inscription from a venturer who came before me. “Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here - signed Kunthea”. It’s got a bit of a lean to the right, so I’ll just straighten it up with a swift kick to the base ... (cccreeeeaak… rumble…aaaaaaarrrggghh!!!)#38 queef huffer:
I reckon Kuntea Kintey’s American accent would provoke more hostility in a pissed Aussie crowd than her ‘asian-ness’.
Lets be realistic as well - Anglos arent exactly thick on the ground in Sydney. That’s some casual romper-stomper swagger you’ve got going on there, mate. Does it come complete with 18-holed red Docs, fresh polished?
Racists don’t say “...blah blah because you’re Asian.” They call you a gook, or slope, or some such derogatory and offensive term, just like they’d say “wog”, instead of Greek or Italian, “nigger” instead of African-American, “Pom” instead of Englishman, because they want to hurt you. As almost everyone here points out, Kunthea’s letter sounds like a complete fabrication, and a poor one at that. I hope she managed better with her other creative writing, because judging by this effort, she needs to seriously work on that “suspension of disbelief” ingredient important for all good works of fiction.
The only other, vague possibility, is that she was paraphrasing, badly. If so, however, she seriously weakened her credibility.
Now, although these opinions can’t be proven, they are at least based on life experiences in Australia by Australians, which is a lot more convincing than “I believe her because…well, just because! And Tim Blair, you’re wrong, because…well, you’re just wrong! And therefore and idiot, so there!” Pre-school children sound much the same.
#56: Whaddya mean, murph?
Registration was easy when I joined… well, okay, there’s one that got through. But if you mean hauling that net full of old boots, dead sharks and tin cans back up to see if there’s any fresh king prawns in there… somewhere… no way.
On the other hand that inquisitive, good-natured ol’ Queenslander optimism of yours is hard to resist…
So now the idiot Lambert has weighed in. Because he’s seen a sign that says “Asians Out!”, it’s plausible to him that “Asians” would be used as a slur at a NYE piss up. As has been pointed out above, a real racist encounter would likely entail the words “Fuck Off!” Or even a non-racist encounter - Earth to Lambert: Fuck Off!
Posted by AlburyShifton on 2007 01 09 at 02:09 PM • permalinkPoor Michelle. For the first time in her blog’s life, she’s had a bunch of conservatives, many of whom are American, post to a thread of her’s. Unfortunately they do so because her post sounds like the shrill whining of the Democratic politically correct brigade. Her post would not be out of place among the Kos Kids.
The upshot is that now, even though a bunch of conservatives now know about her blog, they’ll still continue to ignore it, regardless how apt her observations on Nancy Pelosi or Federal Budget surpluses may be.
I wonder if she realises the significance of being in agreeance with Bryla and Lambert?
Posted by AlburyShifton on 2007 01 09 at 02:26 PM • permalinkHmmmm.
Personally, and I am Asian, Ms. Ker’s story sounded pretty contrived. Hell my best friend’s mother-in-law (!!!) once called me “slinky-eyed”. Yeah that kinda gave everybody pause at that Thanksgiving dinner.
Seriously. Who is going to insult someone by calling them “Chinese” or “you’re Asian”? That’s an insult? Isn’t that more of a description?
But it’s tough to garner sympathy when someone’s been *descriptive* rather than *racist*.

I am not Austrian and I’ve never been to Vienna, but I would never believe someone would make up a story that involves their voters and their personal pride in this way.
Get a grip, and stop accusing people who “have a background in politics” of making up the awful things that happen to their voters.
Posted by AlburyShifton on 2007 01 09 at 06:20 PM • permalinkI have subjected Kunthea’s original statement to analysis by the Polygraph-Assisted Calculator Online. This sophisticated device, developed by Iraqi policeman Jamil Hussein (and yes, he does exist; we have documentary evidence ), can be used to detect mendacity levels in the written word.
While the result is not definitive, there does appear to be a strong statistical likelihood of the inclusion in the original statement of what are technically known to prevarication technicians as “whoppers”.
I just had a terrible experience…
There was a queue for movie tickets in a Chinatown cinema.
As I tried to enter at an advantageous position, I was taunted with cries of “just because you originate from the Occident, you do not receive preferential treatment”.
It was horrible. I had no idea they could be so cruel. I’ll never go back.
Big news from Bryla:
“Sure, I evaluate information using my life experience, and Kunthea’s experience seems all too probable to me. I’ve personally seen many instances of racism (as a taxi driver, several times a week), although nothing as bad as the Cronulla riots.
Bugger me! Bryla’s got a job, and he’s not living off his missus anymore! He’s joined the crazy Camry drivers of the deep North.
Must be saving up for his court appearance in Alice Springs.
