WHATEVER HAPPENED TO SOLIDARITY?

Famously oppressed local dissident Antony Loewenstein is yet to offer any support to fellow silenced author Mark Steyn:

We’ve received many complaints from readers from Vancouver to Toronto to Halifax who’ve tried to purchase America Alone: The End Of The World As We Know It in their nearest Chapters-Indigo-Coles only to be told that their local branch of Canada’s multi-appellated monopoly bookstore chain doesn’t have the book and has no plans to get it ...

C’mon, Antony! Speak up! Denounce the silencing!

  1. Amazon ought to advertise the hell out of this book and do a booming business in Canada!  Then Bezos can give Chapters-Indigo-Coles a rousing raspberry, and a bare buttocks salute waved in their general direction.

  2. "Mark Steyn at his best: funny and irreverent, even while assembling well-reasoned and complex arguments in support of serious insights."
That probably put Ant off completely.

  3. Oh, I’m sure Ant wanted to show solidarity with his fellow silenced author.  But he was silenced regarding the silencing of Mark Steyn (profits be upon him).  Worse still, this nefarious silencing of the silencing was not heard about because, yes, it was silenced.  Silenced cubed!

And just who is doing all this silencing?  The government, of course.  Or neocons.  Bush.  Karl possibly.  With help from men in black helicopters.  You can find it all in Counterpunch man.

  4. Not entirely true. The book is available via the Indigo website

On a side note if you go into any Indigo/Chapters website the anti-Bush left wing books are all given prominent display. Any conservative or “right wing” books are buried in the shelves.

As a form of Direct Action whenever I go into on of their stores I switch them around (I am such a rebel.

  5. I like to pass the time and amuse myself while waiting at airports by checking out the book selections at the shops and moving the conservative authors from the bottom shelf or from behind the romance novels and putting them in front of liberal authors lined up spine to spine on the top shelves. Just my little way to make the world a better place.

Check out the book shelves the next time you’re at an airport and if I haven’t been there yet, make the switch yourself.  You’ll feel so much better and nobody will know why you have that little sly smile on our face.

  8. Ha!

Antony’s book is now into it’s third printing! The second printing corrected the map on page nine such that Haifa is no longer on the border of Lebanon. I understand later versions also made ‘subtle’ changes to other ‘printing errors’ in the first edition.

Curiously, whilst frequently referring to his book as “Best selling” and “now in its third printing”, Antony and the publisher has not once (to my knowledge) disclosed how many copies were actually sold.

Speaking of masturbation, I have glanced at a copy, and am amused to note his claim in the notes that Israeli airport security “inspected his groin” on the way out of Israel.

He can’t. He’s much too busy vilifying Israel and the US and shouting Hooray for Defeat:

Meanwhile, back in the real world, the Bush administration is finally acknowledging that its Iraq mission has failed (shame it took hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqis for this to happen, not that pro-war cheerleaders seem to care.)
Hundreds of thousands! That’s some “real world” analysis right there Antony....

  12. Interesting..while it’s true that Chapters/Indigo on-line is carrying the book, a quick check of all the stores within a 100 km radius of where I live (southern Ontario) indicates that none of them are stocking this book.

Amazing Borders hasn’t bought them out yet.

Never under estimate the power of a hissy bookstore clerk.  I remember when Unfit for Command came out, and I went to my local Bookstar to pre-order it.  The clerk tried to talk me out of pre-ordering as he pulled it up on his terminal..."I really don’t think we going to have demand [sees preorder list] for—oh.”

We enjoy turning copies of Cosmopolitan and Cleo back to front in checkout lane racks in supermarkets. It amazes us that companies that promote themselves as having family values see nothing wrong with placing headlines for ‘get better oral sex’ at the eye level of a 6-y-o.

Probably wanted to make sure he was taking all his little soldiers (little human shields?) with him again...don’t need any little Antonys running around Israel in the future.

  21. Say what you like about Ant (and I’ve said plenty), he used to get a fair number of hits over at his laughable blog at one point in time. Looks like it’s flatlining these days - if the number of comments he’s attracting is indicative of anything. Hang on...this is the Australian leftwing blogosphere’s most celebrated published author! What’s wrong with this picture?

Okay, back on message. My point is in fact rather subtle: Ant may well speak up against the “silencing” of of the estimable Mr Steyn - he may not. Ask yourself; if a tree falls in the forest and nobody knows…

Are you referring to the number of comments submitted? Or the comments he doesn’t censor. There’s a considerable difference…

  24. Oh Dear.

Not only has the Neo-Nazi, Australian League of Rights joined other right-wing extremist groups endorsing Antony Loewenstein’s book, Holocaust deniers are now turning up to Loewenstein’s speeches as well.

This is what happens when you lay down with dogs…

Of course he’ll have a helluva time blaming Zionists for his newest PR problem. Unless Neo-Nazis are also a cunning Zionist plot...[/loewenstein]

  25. PW - having seen Ant and his accessories in real life I really doubt that any self-respecting woman would… want Ant (couldn’t think of a nice way to put it).

Also, I think you should apologise to all soldiers (even the Fwench) for even suggesting that Ant has any kind of soldiering genes in him at all (human shield comment notwithstanding).

  29. Steyn refers to one Heather Reisman as the apparent book buyer for all of Canada’s bookshops. This is amazing. Now THIS is power. Especially when wielded as this woman does - she won’t stock books by conservative authors. Wow!

If I was a stockholder and found that the buyer won’t stock a book that is #2 at Amazon I’d be calling for her head.

  33. #29 Reisman is the CEO of Indigo/Chapters.

Under her direction Indigo/Chapters does not carry any magazines related to firearms.

She also refuses to carry Mein Kampf (but that’s ok we know how that one ends).
