It’s not uncommon to meet Arabs who in one breath denounce the US as the Great Satan, and in the next, express the desire to live and work there.

The Arab world’s relationship to the US is similar to that of a 14 year old boy who’s obsessed with an older woman: he wants her but he can’t have her, so in his opinion she’s an arrogant bitch and slut.

No contradiction at all. The problem being they want the trappings of the west; cars, women, booze, nightclubs, loud music, nike, gucci etc, but they reject what makes it possible. The rule of law, respect for the person and society, and a free society.

The walls of the detention centre at port Hedland were plastered with all these ads brought to you via a secular, peaceful sociey, but many of those desiring them had little concept of what got you them.
I remember taking a bloke on a shopping trip to a K-mart at PH, he was disgusted by “all clothes made in China-shit!!” and wanted to know where he could get gucci and Boss clothing.
I took him to a smaller shop where they had good quality gear and he had a conniption when he saw the prices. He then loudly informed the owners they were theives and he could get “gucci” gear back in iran for “5-10 dollars”.
It is hard to parody the extreme dellusions inherent in much of the middle east. A lust for goods combined with a poor respect for the slow job of accumulating wealth is a problem.

Ummm . . . considering how Big Mo made his living, outlawing organized banditry would be a bit embarassing (heh!) and run counter to the tradition of Islam. The threat of amputation for thievery was intended to keep his own followers in line. However, good Muslim is free to take what he wishes from the infidel.

At Bulimba some time ago there was a, SHOCK HORROR, radioactive leak.

Now, after the big meeja beat up, we hear that it was a substance used in gun sights, etc.

Madonna King is beating it up, too. There was a minister on the radio and he laughed at her suggestions that it was dangerous and why weren’t the residents told.

Now we’ve just had an ex-miliary chap who phoned in and explained that this wasn’t dangerous at all, it probably happened about twice a year at Moorebank, where he worked on gun sights, etc. They are tiny vials of the substance and were occasionally dropped.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAArgh. God save us from panic merchants…

There was a fire in a mattress store house up here the other day. Mass hysteria prevailed for a while; the roof was made of some sort of asbestos cement substance. People were cautioned to keep windows closed and turn off aircon and stay inside at the height of the blaze.

  98. I think I might make us some of our t-shirts.

I was going to make Tim B his own Blair shirts and then send them to him as a gift, but if he thinks I’m only a number, then I’ll make some for you all.

  99. Blairs name might be on the blog, but he doesn’t run it. It’s a bit like Myer - we use the name because we can’t be arsed changing it.
