VILE MURDERING SCUM HAVE FEELINGS TOO
Oh no! Unpleasant words are being used to describe sub-human terrorist filth:
The terrorists who attacked London should be condemned. But in describing them as “sub-human filth who must be captured and eliminated”, Kim Beazley has lowered himself to their moral level. No matter how repugnant their actions, no human being should be described in that way. To do so might be popular, but it is to take the first step towards genocide lawlessness. Once more, Beazley has shown himself unworthy to lead the Labor Party, let alone the nation. The quicker the party gets rid of him the better.
William R. Stent, Rosanna
Nicholas Gruen is also concerned. Like sensitive Mr Stent, however, Nicholas offers no alternative description he’d be happier with. Please contribute possible examples in comments.
UPDATE. And in The Australian …
I expected more of Kim Beazley in response to the London bombings than calling the terrorists “sub-human filth”. We did not hear this kind of stuff from Ken Livingstone the Mayor of London who was eloquent as well as passionate in his response to the tragedy. Surely it is time for a more intelligent analysis.
Paul Durham
Maleny, QldOne local intellectual giant has characterised the London terrorists as “sub-human filth” – just one more of the vacuous remarks that have come to characterise the leader of the federal flopposition.
Bill Priest
Mittagong, NSW
dont worry; that sort of view is not uncommon.
In a Catholic church in Melbourne (Australia, not Florida) the priest asked the congregation to pray for the terrorists , who were obviously a bit misguided….

If it is Bill Stent, he must be retired by now, but I guess old academics still need to have people listen to them!

Posted by The_Real_JeffS on 2005 07 11 at 12:07 AM • permalinkAs a resident of Rosanna, I would like to apologise on behalf of other residents for Mr Stent’s comments. My head is tilted at about 15 degrees (I have a sore neck).
Here we have the common leftist view in black and white: murdering dozens of civilians without warning is morally equivalent to using insulting terms to describe said murderers.
I just noticed the next letter on the Age’s list. It comes from MacLeod, the suburb next to Rosanna, and claims that 1,000 children are dying every day due to the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan.
That’s over 800,000 children killed since the occupation! The Lancet should give this guy a job as a statistician.
Well, to be a little controversial - the sin of terrorism is evil but I am still called to love the terrorist. That is not to say that I am supposed to feel warm and fuzzy towards him but I am called to act towards him with respect, wanting what is best for him. That, of course, doesn’t exclude my killing him if necessary to stop him doing what he plans to do (or has done) but I doubt very much that I am going to have much chance of converting him if I say to him that he “is” sub-human filth. He’s not. His act is. He is not his act. He is a child of God made in His image. That image is obscured (to say the least) but, nonetheless, it’s up to me to help him recognize that which is good in him. And, believe it or not, if he repents I am to forgive him (with appropriate punishment if necessary) but then I am to try very, very hard to accept him back into the family. The “war on terror” calls us all to extraordinary bravery in every area of our lives. It’s too easy to write people off and call them clever names. It’s much harder to love him and hate what he does. I know. I’ve been trying to love abortionists for twenty years while they slice up children in the womb, suck them out of their mothers, pulp them and flush them down the sewer. The act is evil. The abortionists are my brothers (and sisters).

Posted by Hank Reardon on 2005 07 11 at 01:06 AM • permalinkronvanwegen, it’s noble of you to try and love violent people who butcher, cripple, and wound innocent people with carefully planned bomb attacks, all in support of their self-proclaimed desire to destroy Western civilization, and turn the clock back on humanity in general. The same people who could care less if you live or die as well, by the way.
Personally, I don’t hate these creatures—I see them as sick people who are not past redemption, but who actively reject redemption. They’ve had plenty of chances to deal with their problems in a peaceful manner. Death is too good for them, but that’s all I am prepared to give them.
But you clearly want to be more than ”...a little controversial…” with your descriptive post. Ever seen any photos of bombing victims? I don’t recommend it, but I do suggest staying on topic, and not trying to grab this thread for your own causes.

Do a google search on UNICEF, infant mortality, Iraq, Afghanistan and the first articles that come up are all by the letter writer, Dr Gideon Poyas. His figures are extrapolations of references to UNICEF statistics. To support his argument he even cites the “data” from the Lancet “peer reviewed” article that we have all grown to know and love.
Do all these people congregate in the same area?
The comment I posted at Mr. Gruen’s:
Perhaps we can all be forgiven for the strength of emotion in the moment. Nevertheless it seems to me that this language is odious. And it also seems to me that there is a kind of race to the bottom going on in which political leaders try to out do themselves in their language as if this proves the bona fides of their toughness.
We are facing human enemies. Its important to realise that if we want to understand them – most obviously for the practical reason that we want to defeat them.Jesus, you FUCKING MORON. Could you possibly be more childish and vapid? I would love to see a video of you extending the hand of friendship to one of these BLOODTHIRSTY 7TH CENTURY GOAT-FUCKERS. You are apparently too incredibly stupid to realize that you would be one of the first to get your head sawed off.
But yes, of course, let’s not use odious language to describe those who willfully slaughter innocent men, women, and children. Do you not understand why those of us who have some common sense laugh at you leftist idiots?
Ronvanwegen : I’ll try to live up to your example. Hate the Sin, Love the Sinner, and be prepared to kill them to prevent their Evil.
I don’t hate the bombers - I’d be happy if they suddenly realised they were doing evil, stopped, and made restitution, merely killing them is a poor second best. But it will do.
Personally though, I can’t help feeling that Beazley’s remark is insulting to all subhuman filth.“lower oneself to their moral level”.
This is one of the ready-made-for-morons argument against the death penalty, too.Posted by Honkie Hammer on 2005 07 11 at 02:58 AM • permalinkWhat the Holy Father said regarding the London terror:

To all those who foment sentiments of hatred and to all those who carry out such repugnant terrorist attacks, I say: God loves life, which he has created, not death. Stop, In the name of God.” (my emphasis)Posted by ronvanwegen on 2005 07 11 at 03:12 AM • permalinkI agree, aebrain. Including the insult to subhuman filth.
As for the updates…..if Beazley can piss off leftoids, more power to him. Maybe he can adjust his own leftoid “imbalance”, and return to being a bona fide, lower case “l” liberal.

And nothing short of death will stop them. Can’t you understand that? Nothing you say or do will change their bone-deep obsession with turning the clock back 1400 years. Martin Sheen with Aaron Sorkin as Chief of Staff might be a nice start ;)
And while on the subject of using words loosly, try this example from an article about the various groups seeking to undermine the USA’s military:
The largest of the major pacifist groups, AFSC touts itself as a natural extension of the traditional Quaker movement. It is anything but. AFSC has defended the Viet Cong and the PLO. It took the position that reports of Pol Pot’s genocide were of part of an American “misinformation campaign” and described Pot’s regime as an “example of an alternative model of development and social organization.”

It was the closest I’d heard to a prelate blessing our part in the war on terror. Prayer for one’s enemies shouldn’t be coarsely dismissed.

Posted by swassociates on 2005 07 11 at 01:33 PM • permalinkTo my mind, this particular Gruen comment is quite reasonable. He supports crushing the terrorists but is against the use of dehumanising language in describing them. He has missed a major argument in favour of his position, though. The use of dehumanising language does not really dehumanise its objects - they’ve already done that through their vile actions. It dehumanises the speaker. We should not descend to the level of murderous terrorists. We certainly should hunt them down and eradicate them, however.
We should do this. Unfortunately, the appeasers are against us rounding up the vermin onto cattle trucks and shipping them to the Gobi Desert. So the best we can do is use bad language.
I don’t understand your point, you are FOR shooting terrorists in the head but AGAINST calling them nasty names while you do it?
Let me guess, someone else will have to do the hunting and killing for you , right?Re #86
Wrong, CB. I’m all for calling them accurate, nasty names and I have no qualms at all about being involved in the hunt. However, the war on terror is really a war of ideas - freedom vs theocratic despotism, democracy vs totalitarianism, tolerance vs intolerance, etc. Nasty ideas can only really be defeated by better ideas. We should live our better ideas, not just espouse them. Calling murderers murderers is accurate. Embroidering (a la Beazley) is demeaning to the speaker.
