TRY MINUTES

Labor’s blunder-prone future environment minister is impressed by Earth Hour:

Mr Garrett said the act of turning off the lights for an hour would ricochet around the country and the world for years.

  1. One piddling little hour?  Ha!  I can beat that - I’ve had all my lights off since I went to bed last night (this morning) at 3 AM.  As it’s now 3:16 PM, that’s a whole twelve hours without lights.  Gaia had better appreciate this huge sacrifice, the ungrateful bitch.

  2. Mr Garrett said the act of turning off the lights for an hour would ricochet around the country and the world for years.

And then it would (to borrow a phrase from the great Tony Orlando) stretch all the way to the universe and fill up the black hole in space.

  3. And it shall forever be known as the hour which changed the world. And its name shall be spoken in hushed tones.

  4. Sorry, Pete. It’s going to ricochet around inside a few empty skulls, yours included, but even there only until you get your next idea for an utterly pointless gesture.

  5. I’m reminded of those little steel balls you used to be able to bing and bang around inside an old-fashioned pinball machine for an hour.  Dunno why that struck me as relevant, unless it has to do with killing an hour until CSI comes on.  Was there some event I missed?

Despite the attempt by the evil Lord Halliburtonmort to kill it, Sydney would become known as the City that Lived.

  11. Jeez. I turn out the lights every night for at least six hours. Where are my fawning admirers?

  17. Silly Cate embraces “thoughtful darkness,” (a marriage in the offing?) and earth hour organisers want to make it an annual event. What’s wrong with monthly, or weekly, or daily for that matter? Better yet, switch off the electricity at sunset and fire it up again at sunrise. Who needs electricity anyway, when there’s a perfectly serviceable cave I can sell you for a very moderate sum?

  18. Channel 7 TV News Sydney said of Cate’s talk of making it an annual event -

"perhaps the start of a brighter future”

If only I could believe this was deliberate sarcasm.
