TREES GO NUCLEAR

Nature’s greatest enemy is ... nature itself!

Victoria’s monster bushfires have generated the power of more than 100 atomic bombs and pumped out millions of tonnes of pollution, greenhouse gas and toxic clouds, scientists say.

The tens of million of tonnes of carbon dioxide pumped into the atmosphere by the 1 million hectare blaze exceed the combined emissions of the state’s power stations, industry and cars by about 30 percent, according to figures compiled for the Herald Sun online by the CSIRO ...

The fires also generated 2.5 million tonnes of carbon monoxide; 300,000 tonnes of volatile organic compounds such as benzene, formaldehyde and hydrocarbons; 85,000 tonnes of methane; 64,000 tonnes of nitrogen oxides; and 59,000 tonnes of smoke ...

The energy produced by the blazes also dwarfs that produced by humans, according to data provided by the CSIRO and energy agencies.

This is why so many members of the Greens are volunteer fire fighters. Oh, wait ...

  1. The way they stir up trouble you would think the Greens were volunteer fire-lighters.

  6. Humanity can make amends!

Fill 100,000 Watermelons with water till their bellies are near to bursting, then throw them on the fires as big ol’ bio-degradable water balloons.

This will put out the fire and end its ravaging of momma Gaia’s breath and reduce humanity’s overall impact for some time to come and give poor momma Gaia time to heal up..and the charred remains of the Watermelon water bombers will help to fertilize new forest growths.

  7. Maybe Popular Science will recommend a giant orbital sprinkler system. It wouldn’t be any crazier than the 600,000-square-mile space mirror they dreamed up in this article.

  8. O/T but since the originating post does have NUCLEAR in the title, it kinda sorta fits, almost, anyway.

  9. FTA - Maybe we can have our fossil fuels and burn ’em too. These scientists have come up with a plan to end global warming. One idea: A 600,000-square-mile space mirror

somethings not right with that… I’ll just fix it up a bit

We can have our fossil fuels and burn ’em too. The earth doesn’t need to be saved.  Get over yourselves.

    thats better

  10. “CSIRO atmospheric scientist Mick Meyer said the emissions from Victorian fires were about 10 times normal.  He stressed the carbon dioxide from fires would not add to global warming because replacement trees will absorb the increased carbon dioxide over time.”

Hey hey!  Mick’s come up with the solution to global warmenising!  We just need to switch our power stations from dirty coal to good ol’ timber because the combustion will “not add to global warming because replacement trees will absorb the increased carbon dioxide over time”.

CSIRO should patent the idea pronto!!

  13. Its a fair call Tim but also the fire fighters have to look at a new strategy. The do nothing until it comes near homes is not good enough now a days. Canberra is true testament to the invalidity of this labor party style thinking.

I’d be far more concerned if they were Soviet nukes as opposed to North Korean ones…

  21. If you can’t imagine how powerful and terrible the fire was by comparing it to the equivalent of 112 one-megaton bombs, consider that this fire produced the equivalent to the energy needs of 125 million (active or moderately active adult female) environmentalists for just one year, give or take a kg of her weight. [Sorry ladies, but I didn’t find and an example for adult male energy needs from this WHO study.)

I have a new appreciation for what these firefighters faced; I flee at the sight of just 3 or 4 of them.

  28. That’s right Infidel Tiger.  Yeah, we should sit down and try to understand what got the fires all worked up in the first place.  Root causes!  Probably John HoWARd’s fault somehow.

If that doesn’t work then we should ban fun cars or cars that haul lots of kids until we make up for all that carbon.
