Margaret Whitlam is no fan of hand-holding, but she’ll make sandwiches for decades:

Her marriage to Gough has been a extraordinary partnership and it has been for better or worse, in sickness and in health. It shows the strength of her kind of love. For that matter, she still makes his sandwiches every day to take to the office, and has done since 1975.

  1. That mysoginist patriarchal son of a bitch has been making that poor woman build him sandwiches for 31 goddam years!  Wait till the Left gets ahold of that!

    Oh, wait…

  3. You mean this retired (for thirty years) old has-been still goes to the office every day? And what to do exactly….?

Re the hand holding: Also, it really has been quite exquisite to watch all the lefty spear carries like Fran Kelly and Michelle Grattan try to defend the old woman but you can tell their hearts are not in it because all it does it make her look like a embittered and envious old woman.

  4. Gough was 59 in 1975.

Why would you start making sandwiches and all that carry on after you have been married for 33 years for God’s sake?

  5. Instead of sangers,it should have been humble pie he was chowing down. Whitlam left the house just to escape the old bat.

  6. What does it tell us about their relationship that Gough has gone to the office every day since 1975?

  9. Whitlam was sacked from Govt in 1975 and spent the rest of his life getting free lunches.

  10. Margaret is a very remarkable woman - she’s got nothing important to say after living for 86 years, a lot of it married to a man whose every word is the utterance of a Genius-in-his-Own-Lunchtime

  11. Gough and Margaret hed been married around 30 years when Gough was PM.

They might not be into hand-holding, but I do remember a piece of footage of the Prime Ministerial bedroom that was shot during Gough’s tenure as PM.

On the side table, along with the usual stuff, was a jar of (ahem) Vaseline.

Maybe Margaret is just into more physical manifestations of intimacy?

  15. Wait till someone tells her he always eats lunch out.

Reminds me of a formative experience.  Many years ago one of the heavyweights in the office came past my desk and said “Jim, we’ve all been invited out for lunch today by the consultants.”

“Great,” I said grabbing my jacket.

“So I was wondering if you wanted these cheese & tomatoe sandwiches.” he said.

    (it wasn’t Gough)

  16. Go easy people, I feel that some moderation is warranted here.

Just because someone’s appearance brings to mind a bovine’s digestive tract, and they have a personality to match, doesn’t mean we should be judgmental.

  17. Gosh, didn’t he get sick of sandwiches every day for thirty years?  I mean, would it have hurt to put in a Cup-o-Soup, or some noodles once in a while?

  18. What’s Gough been doing in that office he goes into every day for 31 years?

  19. #18 exactly what he did in office - acting like a gold-plated, vomit-inducing, self-agrandizing, hypocritical tosser.  and that’s just the good bits

free uni education for a while was good though - created a whole new tranche of the middle class who became the pseudo-intellectual chardonnay socialists who provide australia with such a rich supply of moonbat idiocy at which to rail & scoff

Nope, rumour has it that Marge has been making him beetroot sangers on white. That way he gets the colour to show. Not quite labour red but close enough.
