THE NIGHT THE SOLDIERS CAME

The Washington Post’s Jackie Spinner meets a calm and reasonable Baghdad resident who turned against the US after ... well, you’ll find out soon enough. The sequence of extracts below is altered from the original to more closely describe events as they are alleged to have occurred:

By all accounts, Imaad, 32, was a typical, mild-mannered college graduate who spoke English well and had quietly supported the U.S. presence in Iraq—until Jan. 5, the night the soldiers came.

The night they came—for vengeance!

His story about that night, told days later in his small living room, is the story of how the U.S. military made an enemy of one man during a 20-minute encounter.

A 20-minute encounter—with terror!

On the night of Jan. 5, Imaad and his mother, Um Imaad—both of whom declined to give their full names for fear of retribution—were watching a movie in the living room.

In the living room—of impending bloodthirsty murderingness! (reader: quit it. tim: okay)

Imaad said they were startled by a loud banging at the door. He went quickly to open it. When he did, Imaad said, there were about a dozen U.S. soldiers standing with their guns pointed at his head.

Every single one of them?

Imaad and his mother said the soldiers rushed in, ordering them to sit together while they searched the house. “You look poor,” Imaad recalled one of the soldiers saying. “Why?”

Seems an unusual thing for a soldier to say. Maybe he was a Sociology Commando.

Imaad answered in English: “I have not been able to find a job, although I’m a graduate of the College of Arts.” His heart was pounding, Imaad said.

As well it might. For we are about to reach this story’s moment of Hitchcockian ultra-horror:

The soldiers went to search his bedroom. He heard laughing, and then they called for him, he said. Imaad went to his room and saw that the soldiers had ...

But it’s unlikely; troops on a raid are more interested in getting the job done than in humilating some self-starting satyr.

It strikes me that Imaad refuses to admit that he enjoyed his little pleasure, and when (ahem) exposed, simply couldn’t admit to his sins (or whatever).  “I swear, Mum, the Americans forced me to do it!

Sigh.  More blame projection of Middle East short comings on Western Civilization.

Thank heavens. I was afraid it was going to be something along the lines of Imaad went to his room and saw that the soldiers having rifled through his panty drawer were cavorting about wearing several pairs on their heads. Now that would have been Hitchcockian horror.

Let’s be fair to Imaad. I’m sure he only has those magazines for their articles.

And richard mcenroe is right. This little scenario plays out hundreds of times a day right here in the good old USofA (ok, maybe not with the armed soldiers and all). No need for the silly Ms. Spinner to go all the way to Baghdad.

  28. It’s curious that a knock on the door in the middle of the night is what is anxiety-producing, considering the courtesy of knocking.  It shows the strength of civilization.

Mother-hitting shows the opposite, giving way to temptation.  Giving way to temptation is rampant, in fact.  Yet giving way to temptation does not produce anxiety.  That is why hitting mothers is not the theme of hard-hitting investigative news stories.  News stories are organizers only of anxiety.  Readers demand it.

  30. I’m struck by something else:  “On the night of Jan. 5, Imaad and his mother, Um Imaad—both of whom declined to give their full names for fear of retribution”.

Er, “Um Imaad” just means “Imaad’s mum”. It’s not a name, it’s a title.  Throughout the rest of the piece,  when Spinner keeps referring to the mother as Um Imaad, all she’s really saying is “Imaad’s mother” - so why not just say so?  Why use Arabic for this particular word instead of English?  She doesn’t use the Arabic for “television” or “mosque”, or “feelthy peectures”, so why the Arabic for “mother”?

Unless, of course, Spinner has no idea; but if she knows so little about the culture she’s writing about, why is she writing about it?

That’s where all they way down the line, through every level of society, intimidation is used to achieve the desired result - submission. If the mum was not a mum, she’d just have to kick the cat.
Why are the feminists so silent?
Compassion Failure cuts in where things happen which are outside the real area of interest - usually the local political area. As long as Emily’s List is still financial and afloat, womens collectives thriving, grants flowing for really esoteric projects, that’s what matters.

  33. spread the magazines on his bed and put his Koran in the middle.

Um, not to be a nitpicker or anything, but how does he know they did this deliberately and weren’t just tossing stuff on the bed at random as they pulled it out of his chest of drawers/bookcase/whatever? The reason I’m wondering about this especially is that presumably Imaad’s Koran was in Arabic. How did they *know* it was a Koran and not just some random book? Unless one of them was an Arabic reader, but that’s not common.

  34. So Spinner’s saying, “Imaad and his mother, Imaad’s Mother”

Yes.  It’s perfectly common in Arabic culture for a woman to be referred to primarily as “X’s mother” (“um X”), especially if she’s a widow with only one son.  It’s also common for men to be called “X’s father” (“abu X”), if they have a son they’re particularly proud of, or who’s well known.
