SUPERFICIALITY TRANSCENDED

The Boston Herald’s Jules Crittenden on celebrities against terrorism:

I still, by and large, don’t give a damn what actors think. But in this case, the pigs have taken flight. I have a prediction. More of them will emerge. Actors who think it’s cool to oppose murderous terrorist groups and have the totally cool sophistication to appreciate some level of complexity in world affairs. Actors who have the ability to look past the immediate emotional impulse, buck the cocktail party clucking, and transcend superficiality. This is something different, and I’m interested.

Besides, Nicole Kidman is hot.

UPDATE. Here’s the anti-terrorism ad as published in the LA Times.

  1. True, Nicole Kidman is a hot babe. Pity she fell for Tom Cruise, the vertically challenged religious nutcase.

  2. Yeah, Wylie, but she did snap out of it.

The male signatories on that ad are mucho macho.  Hmmm.  I wonder what that could mean?

  3. The author summed up my thoughts perfectly.
I don’t care what a bunch of actors have to say, however on this occasion I am glad they said it.

  4. Maybe they are keen to get in on the merchandising tie-ins?

Or all the roles in the David Hicks play were all filled!

  6. I would eat Nicole Kidman through a straw!

  7. Nicole Kidman es muy caliente and I would also say a damn fine actress.

She was robbed of an Oscar in To Die For, a criminally overlooked film. I would heartily recommend this dark comedy written by Buck Henry to all Tim Blair readers who haven’t seen it.

It is loosely based on the Pamela Smart case in New England and Nicole plays the part to earnest perfection. It seriously made me consider her in a whole different light as an actress.

  12. Anybody have a list of the other signatories?  I’m still wondering where Gary Sinise’s name is.  (Yes, I am obsessed, why do you ask?)

  13. I second Achillea.  Was Gary Sinise on that list?  And where is the COMPLETE list of signatories???

  14. JDB-To Die For is really good, but I also like Dead Calm because…uh…because…um…well, mainly because you get to see Nicole’s butt.

Like the kid in To Die For, I’d probably kill somebody if she asked me to.

May you be haunted by visions of Susan Sarandon. Nekkid. As she is now, not from Rocky Horror Picture Show.

  18. 91B30, you want to check out Windrider. She did get her kit off in that.

There are stills for it online - a quick google will find it for you, but I just find posting links to nude women somewhat discomforting.

To Die For is a classic movie, though. One of the high points in her career.

  19. Achillea, Gary Sinise doesn’t need to sign some bit of paper - he’s been putting his time and money where his mouth is for a few years now with Operation Iraqi Children.

I’ll confess he can park his boots under my bed, so I understand your obsession.

PS: Tracked down a copy of Wed’s LA Times, list of signatories to follow.

  29. Thinking about it, I’m not really surprised to see Eric Braeden’s name on the list.  I recall an interview with him years ago where he was raising his kids with archaic values like being polite and respectful to adults and not using some variation of f*ck every third word.

Doesn’t hurt that he’s got a voice that could make a gal’s toes tingle just listening to him read the phone book.

  30. If the courageous Jews on that list decided to shut up shop and just not deal with the dangerous anti-Americans (Sarandon, Penn, Streisand, Clooney, et al), these deadshits wouldn’t work again in Hollywood.

Even the so called powerful ones like Clooney might find it hard to rustle up a crew. Nobody will want to be known for working with a fifth-columnist traitor.
