STROLLERS NOTICED

David Marr obeys the first law of protest reporting:

The scene in the street was so Australian: teachers, Rabbitohs, wharfies, university students, families with strollers ...

Australian Associated Press also observed stroller law:

Parents with young children, some in strollers, also joined the march from Town Hall, down Park Street, to Hyde Park North.

As Marr notes, nobody was hurt or killed - possibly due to protective stroller abundance:

By a miracle, no demonstrators were injured.

Police weren’t so lucky. No strollers, you see.

  1. Let’s hope they captured every detail of that cheerful crowd and the placards they were carrying: “Marry Me Chaser Boys”; “Austrians out of Iraq”; “Bush World’s Worst Leader Tony Abbott Included”.

    Wha…huh?  “Austrians”?!?

    Your demographic term them ‘breeders’, I believe, Mr Marr-di Gras?

  8. Don’t blame me that the Sydney cops haven’t received their Pram-Attacking Combustible Ordnance ® yet. I sent the PACO® request to the Israelis, but they said they needed the guidance systems for use in the latest mark of ambulance-seeking missiles. [Neither PACO® nor any PACO® subsidiary will be making any refunds.]

  12. I was able to witness (but unfortunately not photograph) a protest in downtown Auckland yesterday against a US/NZ deal.  About 50 to 60 people (although that number will no doubt double in the media).  The usual combination of old folks, hippies and anarchists.  Including one guy in black with a handkerchief tied across his face who thought he was SO badass for lighting a flare.

  14. I’ll say it again. It astounds me that the SMH can carry a person - Marr - whose only role appears to be special correspondent for bile with particular reference to anything relating to the Howard government. Did anyone point out to him that the police force is a state government responsibility.
    What on earth would Marr do with his time if Labor won Federal government.

  15. Marr has got strollers on the brain.  I rode the wrong way through the procession and failed to see a single stroller.

    OK, I might not have seen the entire procession, and the sneaky stroller drivers might have taken a different route to mine, but as far as I am concerned, there were no strollers!

    I even had a look at some video that I shot of the crowd once it stopped for the speeches and guess what - no strollers!

    Again, I only have part of the crowd, so there might be a stroller or two lurking in another section that I did not film, but if strollers were that popular, you’d think that a panning shot of half the crowd would show up at least one of them.  Where you have strollers, you have knee high rugrats, and I can’t see any of them either.

    Maybe when he says “strollers”, he means “two lovely men, strolling hand in hand”.

    Note to David - strollers are like prams.  They are designed for holding small kiddies.  Some, like mine, are bright orange and very easy to spot.

    Yes, methinks the word “strollers”, like “families” is being trotted out to claim higher moral authority.  No mention is made of the 9/11 truthers, the paranoid Loose Change kooks and the man dressed like a collection of sheep turds.

  16. #14 the first few months of a federal labor government Marr will be unable to find any action undertaken by the Kruddster as wrong;
    After a couple of months there will be whining about how the Kruddster must be being poorly advised;
    About a year in Rudd will be accused of betraying the hopes of the Australian people. Repeat for twelve months;
    Six months before the next election Krudd will be described as the best hope for the Australian people, as long as he moves forward with the timetable for saying sorry to indigenous, poofters, whales and misunderstood goats; the republic referendum and legalisation of gay marriage.  The other side of politics remains TEH EVIL.

  20. Give the MARR a go: he meant strollers as in walkers not strollers as in pushers: a most brilliant but manipulative “double entendre!” But then he is ever so clever!!!!!  He does belong to the most intelligent and creative demographic and the most intellectually endowed element of society: a leftist newspaper reporter of a particular inclination!!!! s/off

  22. So, the police and the state are brutal, violent, oppressive fascist machines.  Therefore I will bring my young child in a stroller because…

    1) These brutal, violent, oppressive fascists would never hurt a baby.

    2)  These brutal, violent, oppressive fascists would never club me down in front of children.

    3)  Hey! Maybe they’ll stomp the stroller on camera!  Sure, my baby gets her little ribs kicked in, but that’s a price I’m willing to pay for peace!

    4)  Infants suck that CS gas right up, man!

    5)  While the brutal, violent, oppressive fascists are trashing my child, I’ll have time to run away…

    As far as I’m concerned, Child Services should have a wagon at every one of these marches, rounding up ever kid exposed to such a hazardous environment and charging their “parents.”

  23. Anyone who takes little kiddies to a protest that has any chance of turning violent is guilty of child abuse.

    I was appalled at the sight of terrified children crying their eyes out at the maritime union demonstrations at Fremantle docks as the wharfies fought with police and security.

    Any sympathy I had for the unionists evaporated at that sight.

    It was the wharfies’ use of children as human shields that did it for me, as well. I once was ambivalent towards unions; no longer!
