SPITBACK GUZZLING FEARED

Mighty writing, as always, from the Bulletin’s Paul Toohey:

Labor still likes to imagine it’s a folk singer belting out tunes for the weak and needy. But Labor hasn’t gone and had a chat to the weak and needy for decades. If they did, they’d find something out: that the hobo hiding under the shop awning corner will clutch his bottle of McWilliam’s Port hardest to his chest when Labor comes by, fearing it will reach down and guzzle the last remnants, spitbacks and all.

  1. Amen, Paul. As far as I can tell, the modern Labor Party exists to pursue the interests of the white-collar public sector, and no one else.

  3. “Spitback” is the same as American “backwash,” I presume.

  4. The punters usually get it right when betting on elections. Here are the latest odds of Maxine McKew beating the PM for the seat of Bennelong. (For non-betting folk this means Mrs Hogg is no chance.)

  6. The problem for Labor is that to create their natural constituency of disadvantaged people, they need to be in power.

  7. I guess here’s a reality check for Max.

But now, as a politician, it is you who is going to have to do the explaining.
There’s a big difference between a question and an answer.

It’ll be funny watching her stumble and dissemble while the person across the desk sits there all disbelieving and po faced.

The haughty Mad Max looks like something straight out of the Ladies’ Auxiliary from the 1950s, can just picture her wearing a polka dot Doris Day frock and pearl necklace.
JWH has more of the common touch and is more in touch with the man/hobo in the street.
Mad Max is a perfect match for the Krudder.
How ironic, the ‘conservative party’ has more of the commom touch.

  9. Toohey is spot on about the difference between asking questions and having to answer them.  It’s tempting to think that Maxine, after years of thrashing Howard and his ministers in slanted TV interviews, where the rhetorical advantage is always on her side, has fooled herself into thinking she can beat them in an even fight.  But she couldn’t be that naive, could she?

As others have remarked previously, Mad Max appeared never to deviate from the scripted interview, it always appeared like she was interviewing someone on behalf of the Public Service Left, i.e. it was implicit that she had the Civil Service Left machinery to back her up ... very much like the Krudder, the axeman with the Premier to back him up, should he get into strife ... no leadership qualities at all.

The Labor exists for the benefit of members of the Labor party and their families. It is no different to the mafia. And like the mafia, it is happy to forgive loyal members for any transgression and totally merciless to those who rat on it.

  12. #11 - And “ratting” can just mean not voting the prescribed ticket on any issue, inside or outside of parliament.
