<< BIG LOSERS STILL BIG LOSERS ~ MAIN ~ DAY ONE >>
SITE MOVED
Adjust your bookmarks, people. We’ve shifted over here.
The new site - the shiny new Daily Telegraph site - is only an hour or so old as I write and very much a work in progress. No links yet to other blogs, nor do I have any idea how comments are meant to happen. Give it (and me) a few days.
Massive thanks are owed to Florida’s Andrea Harris, who patiently and expertly hosted me for five years and who during that time became something of a cult figure in Australia. It took the might of News Corporation to lure me away, Andrea.
Now - to the future!
We can’t comment at Tim’s site yet?
WE CAN"T COMMENT AT TIM’S SITE YET?!?!?!?!?!
OH, NO! I AM SUFFERING WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS!!! MUST COMMENT AT TIM’S NEW SITE!!!

I wonder, will discussions about PACO Enterprises’ latest ::ahem:: products be considered “unpermitted free advertising” (aka “spam”) by corporate lawyer types who don’t get the joke?

(I haven’t looked at the comments section yet to see how it’s done.)Thanks, Tim, it’s been an interesting ride these last five years. “Met” some interesting people along the way, the old timers that were here when I arrived, like Richard McEnroe, JeffS, DaveS, kae, and wronwright and paco shortly after. 1. I concur.
2. Spontaneity – gone - you only have to look at some of the comments on Bolts blog,
3. Neither can I - e,g., try this one for size if you are up to wading through. I have found that even though I may agree with much of what Bolt says, reading his blog and the comments is pretty unexciting let alone contributing.
4. So do I. Anyone want to set up TB Parallel Blog?
5. Tim’s new blog is the same as Bolts (same MSM) and has a few buttons. It even allows emoticons but I can’t say I’ve noticed any on Bolt’s blog. It may still allow other standard html codes like colour, size, etc. but they would have to run the gauntlet of the moderator.Looks like it’s over until we have a new home where we can be truly free.

As others have commented above the new TB site will, as far as commenting is concerned, become another Andrew Bolt site with useless trolls like ‘Barry Bones’ commenting several times on every post and getting up everyone’s noses.
I greatly fear there will be no more of lengthy, witty, erudite, funny, and even rhyming comments we know and love here.
I rarely comment at Andrew Bolt - it’s a great blog but it’s not worth the effort to put together a literate, properly spelled and grammatical post when it gets swamped by morons and kiddies who post in all-caps.

Or Andrea could somehow run a Blair Ghost blog…. Though the Tele probably wouldn’t like that.
This:
The instant reply is what made Tim’s blog so popular.
That’s how you achieve the camaraderie we have/had there.
Now that it’s going to be wide open to every fruit loop with a computer, there’s no way I’m going to suggest meeting up anywhere.

I’m sure we’ll all survive and cope… I think Tim’s aware of what makes his blog special. We’ll all have to stick with it and see how it goes. I’m sure Tim has protected the, er, unique qualities of the blog.

Speaking of which, here’s the answer to yesterday’s pop quiz, and apparently the last time I get to say Not Safe for Work.
Another downside. From being an national and international blog we now have a Sydney-based newspaper blog. If I’m up to commenting on a very busy newspaper blog I’ll do it on my local Melbourne-based one: Bolt’s.
I’ll certainly read TB daily but leave commenting to the Sydney kiddies.

It’s a pity this site and the Sydney one can’t exist in parallel but suppose there are commercial and legal ramifications.

Thank you for the experience of participating on your blog. It has been great fun for me over the last (nearly) three years. I just checked my profile to see that I have been a relative newcomer to your site having joined on 26 July 2005. There have been many times when members of my family have asked the question, “What is he laughing at?” Those times have been sustenance for my soul!
I trust you have extracted a substantial reward from your employer to make this move and I would like to extend my congratulations on your promotion, because this move must signify one. Indeed, if your move becomes a norm, I may have to re-consider an offer earlier this year to join the corporate world on a most lucrative pay offer (it was huge) ....uh oh just re-considered yet again and the answer is still no. Anyway all of us make choices all the time about all things and you have made yours as being what is right for you just now.
So all the best with your new blog and life in the high flying corporate MSM blogosphere. And if you started a daily column in the Tele, I would even consider subscribing and even have the thing home delivered. Whoops, steady on there… maintain some control.
Anyway, I certainly will look in on your new blog and see how things go.
Cheers,
Wand

Think I will watch from a distance for now. If I don’t make it the other side, many thanks for the fabulous blog. Will remain a loyal reader of your columns.
This development has all the portents of doom. I’m concerned that this will end up with all the negatives that Bolt has, being no limit on who can comment, moderated comments, slow as a wet week and twice as tedious.
However, I am prepared to be patient, until about noon today.
I am sure that you are aware Tim, that this blog is about Blair and the Blairites, in varying measures.

We’ll probably have bloody Lucie from teh Canadian Human Rights Council posting!!
Don’t you mean Margot Blight?
And you sure have some show going on in Canada: a tragic outcome from the mush of Trudeau’s multiculturalism. Let’s hope we can learn from Canada’s mistakes and not repeat the exercise here though I am not holding my breath about our new federal government. As Tim mentioned they are still fighting yesterday’s wars. The budget on Tuesday will likely provide an indication of the way they are going and my guess is it will be more of the same dopey left wing policies that have been shown time and again to fail.
For any readers who are unaware of the goings on in Canada with Human Rights Commissions, see Free Mark Steyn and Ezra Levant. Ezra’s comments re the letter I linked above.

Regarding Newspapers dead tree editions and Web based, content, etc. How can the web-based ones for free fund the overheads? Will there be less journalists (haw), etc.
Having worked at a newspaper for 15 years, I can say with some authority that the price of the dead tree editions hasn’t even covered printing costs or distribution cost for decades, and is there strictly for the “paid circulation” numbers: it’s all about advertising revenue and the rates charged based on those numbers. The web-based version has plenty of advertising, as we see, and rates are based on daily traffic.
I suspect the future web-based revenue issues will be lack of space on an iPod-type screen.

I think this war will bring oil prices down, and that there will be no humanitarian catastrophe.
Also, I think that George W Bush reminds me a lot of Winston Churchill.

A real measure of value and worth would be to end this blog with a 25k post thread.
Now, that’d be something to tell the grand kids about.
But, like I said. Wont happen. This crew just aint got the drive to reach beyond the mundane.
Nope. No sir. No way. No how.
So finally lured entirely to the dark side by Rupert’s filthy lucre, eh? How about getting me a paying gig with the old fart as well- I’d go back to writing obnoxious, insulting, potentially actionable vile drunken innuendo if someone was daft enough to pay me, with the promise of vast advertising revenue streams flowing from my readership of 32. Well they gave one to Tim Dunlop for fucks sake, and while he may pull a few readers (figuratively and literally) none of them would have any money, much less spend what they do have on evil consumer goods when there’s Mullumbimbly ditch weed and Che’ t-shirts to be had.
Deary me- slow loading and comment-moderated sites are the way of the future, eh? I can only stand lurking around Bolts for a short while as it’s slower to load than one of these, and infested with more retards than Federal Parliament, but if that’s the choice between productive work and fannying around on the interweb, count me in.
And if they’re paying OK, buy a decent car- an MX5 is the sort of thing someone like this would drive.

Part I - Paco and Bill Clinton
It was late Monday morning and consciousness snuck up on me with a pair of clawhammers and played a Gene Krupa solo inside my head. It was always like that after a night at Machado’s, getting on the outside of a half dozen whiskey sours. I slid out of bed, showered and shaved, wondering idly if slitting my throat might relieve the pressure behind my eyes. I shook the idea off (the landlord would find it too messy).
Somehow I managed to pilot my canary-yellow 1938 Packard roadster down to the office without passing out and went upstairs. Shielding my eyes, I pulled the cord on the blinds, which opened with a resounding flap! (actually, it was more of a flappity-flappity-flappity !; I always did tug too hard on the cord).
What the doctor ordered was a piping hot cup of joe, but when I checked the coffee jar it was empty. Uttering an expletive of the kind that the newspapers usually delete, I decided to head down to the corner drugstore. I paused on the steps to take on some oxygen, when she walked by.She had light brown hair, the kind Jeanie would have if you really did dream of her, and a prow that could cut through an iceberg and a perfect, heart-shaped derriere packed so snugly into a tight cotton dress that when she swung her hips the taut fabric tacked this way and that way across her international dateline in a going-away walk to make a PETA activist strangle a baby harp seal with his bare hands.
Since we were heading in the same direction I toddled along, determined to enjoy the view as long as I could. Suddenly, she stopped to look in a shop window. As I walked by, I heard a loud “Pssst!”. I halted, took a step in her direction and cocked an inqisitive eyebrow.
“You sibilated, ma’am?”
She gave me a puzzled look. “I ... what?”
“Skip it. Is there something I can do for you?”
She spoke in a low, smoky voice, like somebody who’d bought her cigarettes from the devil’s tobacconist. “Are you by any chance Mr. Paco, the famous detective who solves cases while sitting in his chair?”
“In person.”
“Oh, Mr. Paco! I came to your office a while ago and you weren’t in so I’ve been pacing back and forth. Please, you’ve got to help me! Every night when I get off the subway, a big man follows me home, and later I keep getting phone calls from a guy with a Southern accent and he says dreadful things and . . . and . . . there he is!”
Part II - Paco and Bill Clinton
I turned and looked and there he was indeed. He came shambling down the sidewalk with that well-known leer on his mug and approached my new friend. I stepped between them.
“Hello, Mr. President. Or Mr. Ex-President, isn’t it? I don’t recall anybody repealing the twenty-second amendment.”
“Long time, no see, Paco.” He recognized me instantly; you see, we had crossed paths before (ed. note: see, “The Case of the Pornographic Panatellas”). “Why don’t you mosey along while I talk to the little lady?”
I dug in my heels (not easy on a sidewalk). “Don’t you have some autographs to sign in Harlem?”He smiled more broadly than ever. “Paco, you see those Secret service agents back there? All I have to do is snap my fingers and you’ll be wearing that silly hat around your shoulders.”
My reaction was instantaneous. I couldn’t control it. A second later, Clinton was sitting on the sidewalk, rubbing the back of his hand across his bleeding lips, the recipient of what is widely known in the underworld as “Paco’s line drive.” I can laugh off a kick in the shins or a slug from a .45, but threaten my hat and it’s lights out.
Any moment I expected to catch a hale of lead from the secret service boys, but when I glanced in their direction, they had their backs to me. One was pointing at some apparently invisible item of interest at the top of a telephone pole, while the other was whistling “Hail to the Chief.”
I reached down and jerked Clinton to his feet. “Better put some ice on that. Now, beat it!”
He staggered back to his bodyguards and began to chew them out, but one of them gave me a thumb’s up sign behind his back.
The doll was gazing at me almost with reverence. “Mr Paco! You knocked down Bill Clinton! To protect me!”“He’s had it coming for a long time, lady. And if it hadn’t been me, it would have been some other two-fisted, red-blooded, All-American hero. Join me for a cup of java?”
I really don’t get what Andrea’s problem is with the fine Scottish restaurant.
