SILENCE OF THE LIBS

Eleven journalists in five countries face prosecution for publishing Motoons, reports the New York Times. Where are their defenders? Why the silence?

“I keep hearing, ‘Why are liberals silent?’ ” said Said al-Ashmawy, an Egyptian judge and author of books on political Islam. “How can we write? Who is going to protect me? Who is going to publish for me in the first place? With the Islamization of the society, the list of taboos has been increasing daily. You should not write about religion. You should not write about politics or women. Then what is left?”

Good question. You’d expect Western liberals to be making more noise about this.

  1. You’d expect so wouldn’t you? However, just like those other non-existent world problems such as Burrundi, Zimbabwe, the status of women other than in Government departments or Universities, etc, etc, its far easier to write a whiny letter to the Age or the SMH moaning about how ‘mean’ Australia has become under Howard.

    That’ll show em’ brothers!

  2. Cleft stick- to raise the issue would mean having to admit their previous rapture with the ‘Mo rons was at best naive, more likely pure desperation.

    When has a liberal/leftist/progressive admitted to being wrong about anything, let alone tacitly admit that western democracy isn’t that bad?

  3. Turkey has only 14 shelters for abused women at risk in a population of 70 million.Millions have been beaten in their homes and many others have been raped, killed and even forced to commit suicide. Canan Arin has been involved in women’s activism in Turkey since 1980, when a coup d’etat opened the door for the women’s movement there. She is perhaps most well-known for establishing the first women’s shelter in Turkey, where such facilities are still alarmingly scarce.

  4. A Pregnant woman sentenced to 150 lashes. 2005 october…

    A female domestic worker has reportedly been sentenced to 150 lashes for becoming pregnant outside of marriage in the United Arab Emirates. The woman was sentenced by a Shari’a (Islamic) court of law, after the positive result of a forced pregnancy test. The ordered flogging violates her rights against torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment, and is a form of gender-based violence.

    Could Sharia Law be introduced in Australia so the same thing could Happen to Muslim and Infidel women again. We didn’t need the 1960’s Germaine has left the country and there are no women left to fight the battle.

  9. Well this guys not exactly correct, you can still write about religion in these countries (as the books at that wonderful Egyptian book show proved), just as long as its too blame everything on the Joooos and the great Satan, and promote jihad and head hacking as the duty of any good muslim…

    its anyone that is trying to instill a modicum of common sense into the religious debate that is being told to “shut it” if they know whats good for them….

    but he’s spot on about the cowardice of the liberal lefty MSM….  the only problem is that as they control many of the means to air views and opinions and they don’t seem intent on berating themselves, there really isn’t anyone to level these charges at them, force them to respond to the charge, and demand they change….

  10. Instead of the endless, and pointless, fuming about this on the blogosphere, does anyone have any practical suggestions?

    If I lived in Washington DC, I’d take up Hitch’s proposal:

    I wonder if anyone might feel like joining me in gathering outside the Danish Embassy in Washington, in a quiet and composed manner, to affirm some elementary friendship. Those who like the idea might contact me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), and those who live in other cities with Danish consulates might wish to initiate a stand for decency on their own account.

    Could something similar be organised in one or two of the major Australian cities where there is a Danish consulate? Perhaps, as a suggestion, this is something Tim B might consider coordinating, since he now has a higher profile on the issue than almost anyone in this country.

    Czech Foreign Minister says EU should demand apology for Moslem violence

    The Czech Foreign Minister Cyril Svoboda wants the EU to demand an apology from Lebanon and Syria in connection with the attacks on Danish embassies by Moslem radicals. The Czech Foreign Minister said that while he did not approve of caricatures which hurt the feelings of believers, the Lebanese and Syrian governments were responsible for the protection and safety of embassies on their territory. The EU should take a joint stand on the matter, Mr. Svoboda said, because a show of disunity or doubt would only
    fuel Islamic radicalism.

  18. Interesting information from the manual of the Muslim Brotherhood on the impostion of Islam on host countries.
    Muslims must congregate in ghettoes so that they can impose political demands far in excess of the actual numbers of immigrants.(called a multiplier effect)
    once established, these enclaves can function as Islamic states within the host country furthering expansion through Daw’ah.
    Is this why there are now over 100 cases of honor killings in the UK that the liberalized British police cannot investigate ?

    Dairy Producer Who Boycotted Israel Gets Boycotted by Muslims
    Appeasing the radicals does not help. Here is another example. The Danish-Swedish diary giant Arla is the worst hit victim of the Muslim boycott of Danish products. Arab countries constituted Arla’s most important export markets. An article in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten today suggest that Arla itself has for many years been boycotting Israel .
    Arla are denying these allegations!

  22. This is difficult to say but I’ll try to say it:

    We’ve got to get rid of some of the liberal mental furniture that we have grown up with in our heads, and change our psychology and Weltenschauung all the way down;

    We’ve got to stop seeing the Mohammetans as a wayward and overly rigid element in our pluralistic liberal culture, to be reasoned with and persuaded to live and let live;

    We’ve got to stop worrying about whether we or the Mohammetans are being consistant,reasonable, fair or unfair, or whether or not we are employing double standards in argument and behaviour;

    Those things don’t matter any more;

    It doesn’t matter that 95% or whatever of Mohammetans don’t actually become suicide bombers, but merely passively accept Sharia law;

    It doesn’t matter that I have a Mohammetan friend who is a gentle, kindly, honest and delightful man;

    What matters is whether the West and civilization are going to live or die.

    Those are the terms we must start thinking in.

  27. Liberals’ have sold out human rights and universal values for ‘culture’. The world they defend is a series of mutually incomprehensible ghettos.

    The Enlightenment freedoms the West struggled towards over centuries they don’t feel are worth defending any more.  All that’s left is a kind of rootless ‘pity’ and feeble nonsense about ‘offence’.

    Bloody disgrace.

  32. It’s fun to criticise the lefties, and we all know they’ve got it coming many times over, but I also understand that this whole affair has been quite distressing for the amoralist, cultural-relativist atheo-secularists among us.

    If only because it makes them realise that they have more in common with genuine liberals (i.e, people like me) and conservatives (people like John Howard) than they do with arch-reactionary Islamic opinion, which appears -  in some cases - to reject the idea that non-believers can exist on the same planet as the faithful.

    As for the lefties’ rags. Well, they’re obviously confused as well. After all, they employed Michael Leunig.

  35. Don’t leave it to the liberals - do it yourself. Send a letter to those responsble.  Plain Talking Jane has prepared email letters for NSW and Vic residents to send to their political, police and judicial leaders urging them to apply the law equally to all.  She gives specific legal advice on the breaches of the law she (we) want the publishers and distributors of the Koran prosecuted for.  Enough letters should give the politicians the spine to act, especially with elections in the air.

In order for western liberals to come to the aid of free speech, they would have to accept that all their niggling little “battles” against the Ultimate Twin Evils of Christianity and Conservatism were neither particularly useful nor important.  That ain’t gonna happen—they need their sense of relevance.  Without it, they are a null set.
