SERIOUS CONSIDERATION UNDERWAY

“I am seriously considering cancelling my subscription as a result of this, writes John Quiggin, who’s all worked up about a Sun-Herald story on a guy who once fired a starting pistol at Prince Charles. Meanwhile, I’m seriously considering cancelling my Sydney Morning Herald subscription as a result of this:

Marian Wilkinson is returning to Sydney after more than two years of outstanding work as Washington correspondent for The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. She will head up a national security reporting team.

That’s from Professor Bunyip, now returned to blogging after a brief break. Speaking of the Prof, in October 2003 he identified Phillip Adams’ Johnny Weissmuller obsession. Nothing’s changed, Prof; here’s Phil a few days ago:

At the moment you’re doing Johnny Weissmuller impersonations, thumping your ample pectorals while telling us that you’re a man of action.

  1. To offer you my unswerving support - the same undying loyalty that you’ve managed to get from a united caucus.
Can’t he do better than that?
I’d be worried if I were Kim hearing this sort of endorsement. Likely to last until about this time next week.
Weismuller was (as well as an actor in later life) a champion swimmer.
He knew about sticking to the task!

  2. Tim, didn’t you take out that subscription as the result of a lost bet?

  3. I know in the US there would be plenty of people wondering who the heck Johnny Weissmuller is. You have to be either a fan of old movies, or of a certain age, to have heard of this man. I haven’t seen one of his movies since they used to show them on late night TV when I was a child.

Is he some cult figure in Australia so Australians understand the reference? Are his movies enjoying a revival, like among colleges students or something?

Why doesn’t he just say Tarzan? More people would understand the reference and it would work just as well in getting his point across.

  4. LoL Tim…I wondered if you’d catch the Weissmuller reference in Phil’s latest…and indeed, you did. I swear Phil seems to talk about him only SLIGHTLY less than he does about Gough!

  5. How many people under the age of, say, forty have any idea who Johnny Weismuller is? Under twenty-five?

  6. Could be worse.  He could be closeted for Victor Mature…

  7. Hey, I’m 22 and I know who Johnny Weismuller is.

Sure its only because he was the answer to a question on a beer bottle cap… but its something.

  8. I’m 25 and know who Johnny Weissmuller is, but only because he was mentioned in passing by the introduction to my brothers’ copy of “Great Comic Book Heroes”. I couldn’t identify him in a lineup or anything.

Victor Mature on the other hand…I’ve heard the name, but that’s absolutely it. I have no idea what he did, but a vague idea that he died young. Am I getting him mixed up with some other Victor?

  9. I hadn’t visited Quiggin’s blog for ages. Seems he’s become quite the economic rationalist.
