SAM LY

Australian Sam Ly—son of Vietnamese refugees, raised in poverty by a single parent, sweet and ambitious—has died due to injuries received when the lunatic Hasib Hussain blew up a No. 30 London bus. Five other Australians were on the same bus; Emma-Kate Symons collects their stories.

  4. Many Vietnamese have become exemplary Australians. They had, in most cases, to flee the communist takeover, and arrived here with nothing. They had a basic appreciation that assimilation was the way to go, and many were also christians.
    Having known and worked with a number of them, I respect their solid good sense and innate toughness. They also know how to have a good time, and the reports of Sam are that he was both capable, and fun loving.
    It is fitting that we note his passing with a mixture of sadness and recognition of the richness of the Australian mix of peoples.
    The observation that the attacks on Londoners are like attacks on our extended family are apt. But hell, Granny sure has taken in some strange and dangerous lodgers.

  8. Davo, more like a great example of Australian assimilation which was the commonsense approach before multiculturalism. ie newcomers hung onto and shared what was good about their heritage and embraced the freedom, democracy, egalitarianism and beer of their new land.

  9. Slatts -you are probably right -assimilation is the correct word.
    Multiculturism implies the preservation of differences and is therefore in itself mildly racist.
    It also imples that we should tolerate islamic Jihad out of respect for islam.
