REPORTER LIBELLED

Whatever happened to not speaking ill of the dead?

Anna Politkovskaya, the journalist murdered by a hit-man in Moscow last Saturday, was Russia’s Robert Fisk.

Harsh. Still, perhaps the reference was to this Robert Fisk, who works for a British publication several notches above the Independent.

  1. Sort of on topic.
Foreign Correspondent did a whole piece on Cambodia without once mentioning the dreaded word ‘Communist’.
Hun Sen was a just ‘former Khymer Rouge’, and ran a ‘democratic government’.
They did make much of the corruption and cronyism there, and even hinted thatit was reverting to crushing the peasants like in old KR times, but they said not a word about the fact he was put in power by the Vietnamese communists, whose government style he still mirrors..
The ABC wants us all to think that Hun Sen is just another ‘capitalist dictator’ whom they can safely criticise, ahistorically of course.

  2. I don’t see the comparison. For one thing, Anna Politkovskaya was a good journalist. Fisk isn’t.

  4. Blimey, the poor lass was shot, and now they walk over her grave with such a tribute. Egad.

  5. Well, at least they didn’t call her Russia’s John Pilger.

  6. Strange the way the left laud Politkovskaya for her courage in speaking her mind in the face of death threats, but let their tails curl between their legs when it comes to offending Islam in the name of “prudence” or “appropriateness”.

  7. yes- if she had been an Iranian killed by jihadists, the left would not even have mentioned her.

  8. Little commie bastard thought he was paying her a compliment.  You sometimes have to make allowances for ignorance.  Or not.

If I were that Robert Fisk, I would cringe in embarrassment every time that other Robert Fisk opened his mouth.  Poor man.

  9. Oh, how horrid of me, but sometimes I wish our lefty reporters, like Fisk and Morford and MacBeth Lane, actually lived in a society where courageous reporting could actually lead to a bullet in the head.

I’m pretty sure they’d be waiters, or stockboys, or movie-ticket-takers instead.

  10. Russia’s Robert Fisk.

Not to be confused with the Soviet Union’s Robert Fisk…

  11. Oh they’d still be “reporters” Ushie, but the kind who write for Pravda and fawn over guys like Putin.  They would not dare cross anyone who might put a bullet through them as with Politkovskaya.  With very rare exceptions Western reporters and other journalists only “speak truth to power” in cases where there is no danger of harm from those in power.  That’s why they are all so vicious towards Bush but mighty respectful of Islam, as Peche points out.

  12. Of course the biggest difference between Politkovskaya and Fisk and Blair is that the former two are journalists.  They live in the regions on which they report and use primary sources in their writing.  Blair sits on his a in Australia and uses blogs to source material.  This has the great advantage of preserving the purity of his style which remains untainted by fact or impartiality.

  13. At least the second Robert Fisk didn’t have the van driver go back and identify with the legitimate grievances of the the rock throwers.  One question I have is that I’ve seen English kids throw and the fact that they actually hit something must be some kind or record?

  14. I presume #12 is talking about the News Shopper Fisk, as the other one is a deluded hysterical blinkered mental patient who wouldn’t know a fact if an Israeli Apache fired one up his lying ass.

  15. But I don’t understand!?  How could this happen in a prosperous, democratic, capitalist Russia!?  Surely all must be good if its now a market capitalist society..?

That about sums up your contributions, I agree.

  17. Kilo, do you think a government claiming control of privatized companies whenever it feels like it is the sign of a free-market capitalist society, or do you not have a fucking clue what is happening in Russia because you are a complete and total ignoramus?

  18. No.  I do not believe this.  No human can be as stupid as kilo.  It’s a made-up character.

Some kind of extremely feeble AI.

  19. Well, all of us here being totally on board with Putin’s neo-oligarchy just because Russia is supposedly “capitalist” now is exactly the kind of dumb caricature of a conservative that I’d expect a clueless lefty like kilo to believe. So I can’t say his comment surprised me too much.
