QUESTIONS, QUESTIONS
“What went wrong with the Arab world?” asks The Economist. “Why is it so stuck behind the times?” Salim Mansur also has a question:
The world, perhaps, is exhausted with trying to understand what malady torments some Muslims to behave insanely. And with their propensity to violence as in the latest saga over the Danish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.
How does one explain how cartoons—however objectionable to religious sensibility—can spark violence in the name of Islam, which means peace?
Beats me. It’s not as though they aren’t used to objectionable cartoons ... like this, from Saudi newspaper Al-Yaum:

UPDATE. Tom Gross:
Non-Muslims might have more sympathy with Muslims who find [the cartoons] offensive if it weren’t for the astonishing double standards and hypocrisy of the Muslim world when it comes to accepting and applauding truly vicious slanders against Jews and, to a lesser extent, Christians.
Well apart from the argument that the likes of Syria Iran Egypt and Fatah were playing it for their own political ends others see something more sinister. Is the current malady a political strategy, with the shrieking masses mere pawns.
“More important, however, and perhaps less widely understood, the cartoon jihad is tailor-made to advance the Muslim Brotherhood’s long-term worldwide strategy for establishing Islamic supremacy in the West”
Oliver Guitta.
http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/006/704xewyj.asp?pg=1Sadanand Dhume in YaleGlobal lends support to this discussion about the “Project” and speaks of the Cartoon Jihad.
http://yaleglobal.yale.edu/display.article?id=6939And Amir Taheri believes the rioting is largely the result of incitements from groups like Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood and the supposedly secular Syrian Baathists, whose chief motives are political and not religious.
Heard Prince Hassein of Jordan on radio demanding UN code of Behaviour that they in the Muslim world have been pushing for, which appears to fit into M Brotherhood Project.
While Dhume may think the Cartoon Jihad won’t succeed I have been so disappointed in the West’s politicians and Editors I am not sure that they haven’t actually moved the Project along quite nicely with this organised uproar.
No doubt the apologists like Lowenstein would claim that this cartoon is about Israel or that most evil of ideologies, Zionism, that he so loathes, but the Star of David makes it very clear who the target is.
Methinks that the editorial staff of Al-Yaum is projecting.

However, whether it was or not, enormous swathes of Muslim populations were more than willing to riot and scream and carry placards threatening death. More than a few, apparently, were willing to carry out those threats. That does not speak well for 1.6 billion people educated in Islam, and until the majority of them unequivocally condemn this behavior, I will continue to view all of them with trepidation and distrust.
You fools! Don’t you understand! They weren’t rioting over the impiety of the cartoons! They were rioting because the evil West keeps them too poor to buy newspapers! It’s all about racisim and economic exploitation!

Please be careful about publishing such cartoons. Whilst to thinking people they represent a gross anti-Semitic obscenity, they will stir attempts at rationalisation amongst those who believe that Israel is committing genocide against “Palestinians”. There are many believers amongst the so-called “intellectual sector” of Western society. And the losers in the debate become ... yet again ... Jews in Israel and around the world.
The cartoon you show, if it was the only one ever published by the Saudi authorities (or Arab world), could almost be the subject of fair debate (I said “almost”). It is, however, but a trivial example of the Jew-hate cartoons published daily by the Muslim world (and also some non-Muslim countries - remember the David Brown / Goya cartoon?).
These abominations do need to be handled carefully and considered in context.
Thank you.
Islam means peace? I thought it meant submission.
Islam’s a great religion for the half-truth. Another (although off-topic, illustrates this point). They claim that a woman has a right to consent in a marriage, yet several Moslem web-sites confirm that a man may marry his partner BEFORE she reaches an age of consent (she’s ‘free’ to get out of the marriage later on - when she reaches puberty - if any man will have her).

Like other offensive statements (be they cartoons, movies, articles, or speeches), there is no satisfying everyone, Tony. Tim could post absolutely nothing on this subject, and someone would be offended anyway, because he didn’t take a position either way.
Further, people who might use this to ‘...stir attempts at rationalisation amongst those who believe that Israel is committing genocide against “Palestinians”’ don’t need Tim’s help. They can go straight the source, or to another source. God knows there are plenty of anti-semitic jerks out there, and they need no urging or support to rationalize their beliefs and prejudices.
The statement here is simple: “So what if someone draws an offensive cartoon about Islam? We see worse against the West everyday, and we do little more than bitch about it. We do NOT get violent. Grow up already!” You miss this completely.
Therefore, Tim is well within any context you care to name. Excepting one of the rioting Muslims, of course. And it’s pretty clear that their feelings aren’t being considered here, hmmmmm?

That’s 800 or 900 years before the Christian reformation. Plenty of time to grow up between then and now.
