PREJUDICE EXPRESSED

The ABC’s Media Watch last night tackled major Australian media outlets - the Daily Telegraph, the Sydney Morning Herald, Brisbane’s Courier-Mail, Melbourne’s Herald Sun, the Murdoch-owned PerthNow, and this site - over the issue of online comments:

For those eager to express their prejudices, there are plenty of new forums in the new media.

The major metropolitan papers have embraced the electronic era and they actively encourage their readers to respond to stories online.

Click for the rest. Media Watch also encourages responses; editors from all of the above-named publications were contacted prior to last night’s broadcast and allowed the opportunity to explain their comments policies.

Well, almost all. They didn’t contact me. And it’s not as though Media Watch doesn’t have my contact details, for in 2002 I corresponded with Media Watch executive producer Tim Palmer - then the ABC’s Middle East correspondent - over a matter that might relate to the program’s current issues with freedom of speech.

Palmer first contacted me in June, 2002, about this post, in which I sought the origin of a unsourced Shimon Peres quote that appeared in a Palmer article. He vowed to sue me unless I published an apology and withdrawal. I was a freelancer at the time, without the finances to challenge any serious legal action, so - following lengthy email exchanges - I eventually caved

I wish to apologise to Tim Palmer for any inference that the quotes attributed to Shimon Peres in the above article were concocted or invented, and to acknowledge that his report as originally submitted to the ABC was accurate and reliable.

I gave in after Palmer told me he was contacting his lawyer that very day to file lawsuits against other journalists who’d criticised him, and that it would be a simple matter to add my name to his list. Apology published, Palmer’s next email congratulated me for being “honourable”.

I didn’t reply.

Two years later, after the Sydney Morning Herald’s Miranda Devine had written something nice about me, she received an email from Palmer gloating about the time he’d forced me to publish a “craven” apology. I sent him a note:

Dear Tim,

At the time of our dispute over your Middle East reporting, you emailed me to say my apology was “right” or “honourable” or some-such form of words.

Now I discover via my friend Miranda Devine that you believe my apology was “craven”.

I’m confused. Was my apology/correction good or bad?

Yours,

Tim Blair

PS: How did all your other lawsuit threats work out?

Palmer’s reply:

which lawsuits would those be tim? accuracy simply ain’t your strong point is it?

Oh, no; he’d forgotten his earlier claims. Palmer had evidently lied to me in order to force an apology, then - two years on, and without recalling the details of our exchange - was contacting journalists to smear me. A final email extract from ethical Tim Palmer, Media Watch executive producer:

I have the right to tell as many people as I like about your shoddy work and about the fact that you, after much posturing, fell in a heap and apologised. I’ve told plenty.

Tell them about your lie, mate.

UPDATE. At Media Watch’s heavily-moderated site, you’ll find this:

The only understanding I can make is that MediaWatch carries the torch for Globalism and maybe even Zionist groups as they are known to push Hate Speech laws so they can’t be questioned themselves in crime. ABC is starting to show a disproportionate number of Jews in the places of power in the ABC.

And this:

AC and TT are both reactionary propaganda mouthpieces of the government and big business. The vilification of Muslims, single mothers and the unemployed is rampant on both of these reproachable programs.

Their function is to confuse workers by blaming minority groups that are easy targets and cannot defend themselves, for the declining standard of living and attacks on workers rights, diverting the focus away from the real cause, which is government policy.

The Muslims especially are used as scapegoats domestically, and internationally to defend the crime of the war in Iraq. They serve the same purpose as the Jews of Hitler’s Third Reich.

Jewish folk might not appreciate the comparison.

  1. Have your lawyer contact the (less than) honourable Mr Palmer and demand he retract his slander and publicly grovel apologize. Turnabout is fair play.

  8. We of the unwashed, blogospheric commentariat recognize that self-righteous posturing, selective memory, and lying are some of the chief features of media leftists, Tim, as you know.  It’s what makes living in their world possible.  Mr. Palmer seems to be a living example, and we should pity him for his obvious limits.

That said, that whole article looked like a blatant attempt to stir up some easily stirrable segments of society for a ratings boost.  Sort of the old “Let’s you and him fight” ploy.  Many can play that game.  For instance, El Cid, Kae, and Howzat, among others, you have been vilified as racist homophobes!  Congrats, you three, you’ve made the big time in Socioloonyland.

Mr. Palmer should be aware that the ridicule from this crowd is merciless and devastating, and can be accomplished without any racist or homophobic epithets at all.  I hope he’s prepared.

  10. Oh, and I read the MediaWatch blurb.  They clearly expect every blogger or editor to control moderate comments to their standards.  Following in the socialist pattern of “Do as I say, not as I do”, of course.

While MW is Aussie-centric, I guess they’ve never read Daily Kos or the Democratic Underground, both of which abound in far worse comments.

But that’s what free speech is. If you limit speech to what you agree with, or what is popular, then it is not free.

This point came to mind when reading David Marr’s whinge in the Herald about how the hated Howard dictatorship muzzles the ability of the fearless opinionated underground fighters for truth and justice and ....zzzz....losing ability to stay awake here.

Neither David or his many friends (the Clives, Tracees and Monicas among others) ever have a problem with censorship of ideas that they disagree with.

That’s what “free speech” means to the left - freedom to agree with their point of view.

  53. Tim,

its the left, what do you expect? There are two quotes, used by the ABC, that are quite ironic:

For those eager to express their prejudices, there are plenty of new forums in the new media.

What of writers such as Catherine Devenny and her hate filled rants at those who, gasp, drive four wheel drive cars, or worse, dare to send their child to a private school?

It’s not just newspaper and online editors who’re prepared to tolerate cyber-racism in the name of free speech.

In a week where the luvvies have been trumpeting the repression of the Howard created gulag that is Australia, this is particularly hypocritical. Free speech is only for the left to attack its own targets.

He allowed this vicious discussion about Muslim taxi drivers supposedly knocking back passengers with guide dogs.

It was an emotive topic. Funny how the old ‘rock, scissors paper’ play by the left gets a run. Imagine if it were white cabbies in Brisbane or Darwin doing this sort of thing? The ABC would have been all over it.

Some points in reply to your show 2007-06-18.

The ideals of suppressing ‘Racism’ is a political persuasion, not a commandment. Not all laws are noble nor meant to be honoured thereof.

Multiculturalism is the highest form of ‘Racism’ as it is the dilution of race.

A good reporter takes the middle ground, presenting the facts and allowing the viewer/listener to make the opinion. Why then does Media Watch take the angle that protecting-race difference is abhorrent pursuit? Obviously I don’t agree with abuse of other races, but people should express their concerns or opinions of racial insurgencies that bring about dilution.

The only understanding I can make is that MediaWatch carries the torch for Globalism and maybe even Zionist groups as they are known to push Hate Speech laws so they can’t be questioned themselves in crime. ABC is starting to show a disproportionate number of Jews in the places of power in the ABC.

  67. Peter M has pointed out that MW uses introductory text to imply that this site and the Telegraph are in cahoots (sp?).  The PR picture, too.  Isn’t this kind of Blair’s privately operated space?  Like Lileks has the Bleat but works for the Star Tribune (buzz.mn).  Like the Instapundit sometimes writes for TCS.

These are clearly demarcated to me.  But I don’t know how to say it, since sometimes links are made each way.  Still clear to me though.

  71. I posted the following at the MW message board General section. I’m more or a lurker than a contributor here but appreciate Blair and this site heaps, such a contrast with mainstream outlets.....

I read via http://www.timblair.net that all the media outlets referenced in your segment “Have Your Spray” were given a chance to comment prior to airing, all except Tim Blair.

We then read of previous hostilities between Media Watch’s Executive Producer Tim Palmer and Blair concerning threatened lawsuits and gloating by Palmer within the journalist community over his victory in seeking an apology from Blair.

Was the above in any way relevant to MW’s non-attempt at comment from Blair? Tim Blair quotes that Palmer has previously made the statement to him,

“I have the right to tell as many people as I like about your shoddy work and about the fact that you, after much posturing, fell in a heap and apologised. I’ve told plenty.”

This would indicate a strong level of animosity is, or at least was, held by Palmer towards Blair, and now we find that Blair is singled out such that he is unable to respond (on MW) to criticism that Palmer is very much behind.

Would Palmer care to comment on Blair’s current claim that Palmer’s recalling of the original incident to other journalists was found to be lacking? He even goes so far as to claim that Palmer has lied (your attorney is onto this Tim P?).

I have all the respect in the world for a man who conducts himself honestly and allows their laundry, dirty or otherwise, be aired in full, and in Tim Blair I see that (he admitted his original error). Tim Palmer on the other hand seems to prefer to smear his opponents dishonestly in private and abuse his tax funded couch for that purpose.

P.S. “sprays” are speech, as are right of replies - something we do like to be free in Australia. Perhaps there’s some agreement at “my” ABC and I’ll see mine at your site?

  72. I also meant to compliment Tim B. on his adroit use of the non-friendly ‘mate’.  But Tim Palmer will probably decide this constitutes Hate Speech (’mate’ speech?) and contact his lawyers again.  Still, look on the bright side: it’s safer than writing reviews of Sydney restaurants.

  80. This comment from the Media Watch site is interesting in terms of MW’s own biases:

Tonights Media Watch feature on racist postings on newspaper sites left no doubt about who the producers thought were responsible for the offending words. Given that all of the offending reads were conducted in what can only be described as very laboured ‘strine’ it would appear that what Sydneysiders might refer to as ‘westies’ or perhaps ‘working class’ people are responsible for the reprehensible comments. Media Watch’s presentation of fact is tainted by the poor voice overs that apparantly are designed to assist us in identifying the good the bad and the ugly.

Therefore, if we can shut all the lefties up (duct tape, bullet to the back of the head - take your pick), we can turn them all into RWDB’s.

Let’s not get too carried away in demonstrating pictorially the ugliness that is militant Islam.

I get your anger, though, and feel it too. Why can’t Palmer and his ilk?

    Spot on, 1.6.

Tim’s the bigger man, Palmer lives up to his namesake; he’s not doing Auntie any favours in the long run.
Hopefully, this petty get-even backfires and the site gets more patronage (not that it needs it?).

  148. One thing, isn’t MW publishing all this “hate thought” to show how bad it is falling foul of exactly the the same laws that they accuse Tim Blair and others of breaking by publishing it in the first place?

Fairs fair, if no one is allowed to publish the hate filled thoughts of RWDBs doesn’t that mean that MW can’t publish those same thoughts to demonstrate that an awful crime is being comitted.

Managed to sneak through* a rather don’t-say-too-much-at-all comment over at MW, which included Palmer’s quote to Prof Bunyip about the utter tedium watching someone die of prostate cancer.
Clearly Mr Palmer or any of his five strapping sons are not moderating at the moment. Or they’ve forgotten all about it.

    You need a vote thing.

    Should the ABC sack Palmer?
    a) Now
    b) He should never have been employed in the first place
    c) no

I wonder can we hound the parasite out his “job”.

  167. Some wit on the MW board reckons sites like this are chatrooms for rednecks

Curious as to what Wiki says about rednecks, I looked it up and found, among other things:

People who work outdoors, including poor farmers who farm poor red soil.
    Indentured servants.
Members of the United Mineworkers Union (USA circa 1910).
Rednecks span from the poor to the working class.

    And lots more.

It seems to me that when members of the left use the term redneck to rubbish anyone that odes not share their world view, they do so on the backs of the poor and working class, the very people that they pretend to champion.

Not being a student of literature, is this irony, hypocrisy, bad manners or just sneering abuse?

I think there is a certain nobility in working the land, either on it or under it.

But hey, what would I know.

    I’m just a redneck

  168. I realise I’m madder than a cut snake with a dose of the clap, but aren’t these censorious Charlie’s the same ones who were railing against JWH’s sedition laws? And weren’t they also claiming “Piss Christ” was artistic freedom? Etcetera etcetera.

A welcome glimpse of what life will be like if they ever get their hands on the key to The Lodge.

  174. #172 MM - I would suggest that if I hadn’t posted here at #153, then my MW post would still be there. It’s pretty obvious some ABC luvvies are wading their way through all these posts to see if wordings or themes correlate with anything that lobs on their message board. And good luck to them, they’ll be on overtime in another 45 minutes.

Anyway, that’s why I thought it wise to put the post on image shack once it appeared on MW.

Yep, yairs. The whole argument about MW is probably irrelevant as, after all, this is the ABC we’re talking about and by any measure no one watches it, no one listens to it and no one cares about it or the people on it.

As for the Friends of the ABC, I’ve seen more people gathered around a dead snake.
