PERPETUATION PERPETRATED

South Australian academic Damian Lataan - currently researching “the rise of neo-conservatism and Australia’s role in the United States’ pursuit of global hegemony in the twenty-first century” - investigates claims that al Qaeda used two Down’s syndrome sufferers in recent suicide attacks:

Iraqi fighters and other fighters supporting them do not need to resort to employing people with intellectual disabilities to act as suicide bombers. It would be as much a crime against their faith as it would be for any other religion or culture.

Well, not any. See, while al Qaeda is simply too nice to carry out such acts, Damian knows a couple of religions and cultures that would happily detonate a couple of disabled folk and any innocents who happened to be nearby:

These ‘suicide bombings’ have all the hallmarks of being a false flag operation perpetrated in order to perpetuate the myth of ‘al Qaeda’ in Iraq; to demonise them as people so evil that they would kill innocent children ... By perpetrating these kinds of crimes the US and their allies have proved to the rest of the world that it is only they that are the true animals.

Lataan, naturally, is a truther. In comments, he expands a little on who was really responsible for the Down’s syndrome atrocities:

Israel are more than capable of committing this type of false flag crime ...

Six years ago Lataan was a mature-age student in his final year at Flinders University. These days he’s listed on the staff directory.

and guess what, they also found out the reason why those “youths” are burning stuff in Denmark. It’s GLOBAL WARMING:

Scores of cars and several schools have been vandalized or burned in the past week. Police could give no reason, but said that unusually mild weather and the closure of schools for a winter break, making them easy targets, might have contributed.

  30. The list of topics that students are studying at the “Department of American Studies” has a scent of hard-left anti-Americanism.
    Two examples.
    1. Nathan Church is studying “Religion and the Right Wing in America.” Nathan, only people who hate the right wing call it the right wing these days( unless you’re an RWDB!). If you want to pretend to be neutral, it’s “conservatism.”
My prediction: thesis has lots of: “those whacky bible-bashers have a lot of influence!”
no exploration of the differences between black and white churches, different denominations, or evangelicals/non-evangelicals.

    2. Sarah John’s dissertation is Regulating a Monopoly Political Power. Read, how do we use the U.N. to keep America “in check.” (read, how do we work against American interests using soft power). Sarah, the UN lets dictators and despots have a seat at the table, including the security council. How do we regulate that band of criminals?
Many conservatives will be much more pro-UN when they restrict membership to democracies, or at least non-persecutory-hellholes.

The very fact that they entertain Lataan’s far-left anti-American anti-Israel crusade shows that the whole department is a nest of moonbattery.

    And of course your blog.
    not true, mate.

One other thing, being anti-israel isn’t “necessarily” anti-Jew. However, when you call yourself “anti-” you’re saying you have a big picture position through which you filter all facts, new and old.

Many people start with the premise that Jews=oppressors. From there, any and all atrocities against them can be forgiven as ‘resistance’, and any and all responses to those atrocities are simply perceived as actions without cause: more oppression.

  43. So stunned was I upon reading Lataan and his commenters that my family thought I’d finally gone catatonic. The sudden, machine-gun like pounding of the keyboard convinced tham I was yet of this world as I left this at his site:

There are so many obvious patterns of deviation in judgement and examples of cognitive bias that occur in your “Telling the History of the 21st Century as it Really Is” that I find myself at once agog and aghast that such muddy thinking is passed on—even as opinion, much less as “truth”.

Indeed there are so many fallacies and cognitive biases apparent in your posts that I am recommending this site to a Professor of Psycholgy whose fields of expertise include Social and Cognitive Psychology.

There is enough material here—anchoring, attentional and selection biases; availability heuristics and Ludic fallacy; observer-expectancy and subjective validation effects; to name but a few—that one might devote an entire thesis to the contents of this site alone.

I am an historian, however, and will leave the above (and so much more) to those better qualified to analyse and offer hypotheses and interpretations of the irrational pseudo-certainty found here.

As an historian, however, I take extreme umbrage at the subtitle of your blog.

Whether you count yourself among those who believe, in some Hegelian transcendent teleological sense, that history has to have a progressive direction leading to an eschatological end; or you view history as a series of discontinuities; ruptures, if you will, measured in various time-scales—that which you term “History…as it Really is” is, in fact, nothing more than your twisted interpretation of a momentary Zeitgeist. It is not History.

Even were one to give you benefit of doubt regarding your self-styled “History”, you have no more chance—on this day and in this place—of getting it right than Heisenberg had in telling both position and momentum of any given particle—less chance, in fact, because of the blatant cognitive biases of observer-expectancy and subjective validation effects noted above.

What is written here is not History, and you make a mockery of the term and yourselves by calling it such.

  71. #69 ah, the same age as me - that solves it!  Years of acid flashbacks have lead him into an Alzheimeric phase of dissociation! (many of my cohort are being similarly afflicted I believe, I knew I missed out on something big when I was a yoof)

  72. Have you considered closing down the Humanities (read: Suicide Cult) of your universities and giving the real estate back to the aborigines…

    ...seems only fair…

  74. Re #69, I missed that, Hanyu, when I commented in #15.

Ye gods, the man might well have helped design or build an aircraft!!!

The thought of that scares me shitless.

  75. I posted the following comment at Lataan’s blog:

    Lataan,

I’ll never forget two years ago discussing on Webdiary the necessity of invading Iraq. While others offered up various rebuttals to my points, you said it was inevitable that the jihadis will detonate a WMD in an American city, killing millions, and we should accept it.

An unbelievably depraved statement. You are an anti-American through and through and should be ashamed of yourself.

I would not be surprised if he refuses to allow it to be posted.

  78. I posted this, let’s see if it makes it:

You are a demonstration of the phenomenon of denial.

When you are faced with a graphic demonstration that it is the enemies of the US who are the monstrous killers, you are gripped by cognitive dissonance; your conviction that the US is doing evil is challenged by the evidence that the people the US is fighting are evil. In order to avoid the discomfort of accepting a conflicting idea, denial kicks in and tadaa! Al Qaeda aren’t evil, they wouldn’t carry out suicide bombings on civilians using civilians. No, it must all be a conspiracy and the US and Israel must be behind it.

And that’s how a worldview where Israel and the US are evil and Al Qaeda is not is maintained in the face of evidence that conflicts with that view.

  80. Second, the targets were both useless and pointless and succeeded only in killing a lot of innocent people, many of them quite young.

Er..that’s the point. They’re after a lot of chaos, murder and ultimately, a caliphate.

  81. #43 I just went to the site and did not see your comments. I’m glad you posted them here because I don’t have the patience to sit at these sites and call them on their cognitive dissonance - partly cos they like having it. they’re proud of it.

I don’t think the concept of debate centred on evidence really resonates with the Lataans of this world. Neither, as you hinted, does actual history.

  82. apologies for the number of posts on this topic:

See last 3 posts on his blogs if you’re interesetd before he deletes them.

His response to my initial post where i said that Al Qaeda is real.
“...I’m not interested in conspiracy theories, least of all the ones that the US government keeps telling those that are dumb and gullible enough to believe the garbage they put out. You, I suspect, are one of those. I bet, for example, you really believe that WTC building 7 collapsed the way it did becasue there was a bit of a fire in it! How dumb and gullible can you get?

    My post:

“Calling me dumb and gullible for believing something you’ve imputed to me is not a smart act. I have not spoken of and am not discussing the WTC issue.

Al Quaeda is not a myth. This group’s manuals have been posted online, articles have been posted online, there are transcripts and translations available in libraries, as is plenty of hard fact-based info on terrorism.

You are a researcher, aren’t you? Your use of the words “All we have heard for years…’ gives the lie to your alleged status. researchers do not rely on gossip (most of them anyway). your statement that there is no prima facie evidence on alQuaeda is laughable. Just laughable.

You don’t need to speculate on what kind of person I am, it’s not relevanT. We’re having a discussion, not hanging out. You have a blog in which you invite commentary. I suggest you stick to responding properly to comments here and keep personal speculations out of it.”

  85. #75, I saw your post at Lataan’s before he deleted it. He can’t read, he addressed you as Ron Wright!

    I think you should sue.
“wronwright” conveys a playful mystery with a hint of picante much needed in this dire ol’ rhetorically challenged world of ours.

“Ron Wright” just sounds like a lost aeronautical engineer.
