PALESTINIAN BRAIN DRAIN

Having voted for Hamas, Palestinians now seem inclined to vote with their feet:

A growing number of Palestinians are openly saying they’d like to leave the West Bank and Gaza if given the chance, raising concern about the possibility of a Palestinian brain drain.

They weren’t too concerned about that back when they were stuffing detonators in their kids’ underpants and sending them off to be fitted with Semtex shirts. Brains were drained all over the place.

Birzeit University pollster Nader Said, who has monitored emigration attitudes for 12 years, says the percentage of Palestinians willing to relocate once hovered just below 20 percent. When that figure jumped to 32 percent in a September survey, Mr. Said says he was shocked.

The catalyst, the pollster says, has been Palestinian disillusionment following Hamas’s half-year in government. “What the Israelis were unable to do - try to push the Palestinian out of the country - the internal strife is achieving,” he says.

Way to go, Hamas:

Driving instructor Jawad Abul Sheikh, 38, also a father of five, said the government should step down. “The whole region is standing against them, not only Israel and the West,” he said of the Hamas rulers.

The main problem for Hamasters is their refusal to renounce terrorism and recognise Israel, which results—surprise!—in civilised nations withholding financial aid. So, is Hamas moving any closer to these positions? Hamas if:

Mahmoud al-Zahar, foreign minister of the Palestinian Authority’s Hamas-led government: We will never recognize Israel. The Zionists have occupied our land like the Nazis did with France during the Second World War. Israel is a foreign element in the Middle East. Why don’t the Jews establish their state in Europe?

Not big on celebrating diversity, is he?

  21. During a lull between classes at the Yassar Arafat Institute of String Theory and Particle Physics Research, Gaza City.

Achmed: Farouk, my brother and fellow graduate student of Palestinian physics, why so glum?

Farouk, staring at his laptop:  It is this I am reading, of the drain of the brains of our beloved Palestine.

Achmed: You should be paying more attention to your studies. We have a big test in Semtex 301 tomorrow. That class is a killer! But you have captured my interest. In what manner are the brains of Palestine being drained?

Farouk: Primarily by means of the feet. This is what I have read in the infidel blog of the Tim Blair. Also, according to the Birzeit University pollster Nader Said, 32 percent of the brains are now jumping out of Palestine.  This is what this blog of Australia tells me.

Ali: Come, come, my dear Farouk. How is it possible to extract brains through the feet? Or for brains to jump?  This is nonsense. It is a well-established scientific fact that while feet may jump, brains may not.  Brains may be propelled considerable distances with the proper application of high explosives. But they do not jump. Do you not realize this filthy Crusader is spreading Zionist lies?

Achmed:  I know this Nader Said, my good fellow, and I can assure you he has no brains at all.

Farouk:  No, no. I can feel it.  Even as I read this, it is as though my brain is draining!

Ali: Is it that you feel more stupid?

Farouk: Of course not, you goat!  ... Only emptier. Devoid of brains. As though they have been drained!

Achmed:  As the Zionists drain a swamp?

Farouk:  Precisely, as though it was done by Zionists.

Ali, peering into Farouk’s ear: Let me look.

Farouk: What do you see? Tell me, my brother!

Ali: By al-Jove, I believe you have spoken truthfully, for I see nothing at all! Beyond the earwax, only darkness! This is a remarkable result.  I must take notes!

Farouk: My brains! The Zionists have drained them!

Achmed: Quick, Ali, look at mine!  I am feeling strangely lightheaded!

Ali:  You too! Cleaner than Farouk’s, but just as dark!  I dare not let you look at mine!  Oh look, there is our exalted professor. I say, abu Professor! We have made a great scientific discovery. It is our brains ... they are draining!

If I am right, MF might be able to tell us why Jordan and Egypt just don’t give the two disputed territories to the “Palestinians” and let them run it as Palestine, Bedouinistan or whatever. If the Arabs stop hurling rockets at Israel, I’m sure the Israelis and the rest of the West will help them get established in their new country.
I can see that it would be no time before they had a viable currency, stable government, schools, hospitals, running water, trains on time and maybe even a small airline.

  29. #24 Skeeter, I recognise your request for information as somewhat tongue-in-cheek, and must demure from responding in detail just now.

Suffice for the moment that Jordan and Egypt “lost” the aforementioned regions by prosecuting an unsuccessful war on the State of Israel in 1967. Egypt regained of the so-called territories in the ‘70s via the Begin/Sadat treaty, with the notable omission of the densely populated Gaza strip.

I believe that Jordan (like Egypt and the Sinai sans Gaza) has no interest whatever in the possession of territories and population inimical to the Hashemite regime (google “Black September” and you’ll gain an understanding of why).

Essentially, “Palestinians” are Bedouin with no more attachment or right to the lands in dispute than your average a Berber has to Algeria or Libya (or Spain, for that matter).

There are many here that can answer your query more fully.

I have to correct you. Palestinians are not Bedouin. Bedouin is a generic name for a nomadic desert-dwelling Arab.

Whilst Palestinian propagandists like to lie about their “rich connection with the land”, Palestinian is the name given in 1967 to various Arabs, comprising Egyptians, Jordanians and so forth who were in the area. Prior to 1967 the term was of course unheard of. I suppose some Bedouins could call themselves Palestinian if they chose, but suspect they prefer to be Israeli Arabs given the life this permits them to have.

My experience in Israel in the 70’s (Greater Israel, before the treaties) included many an extended wander throughout the Southern “West Bank” (Judea), the Sinai, the Negev and Gaza. I met mostly Bedouin Arabs, professing no allegiance to either Jordan or Egypt. Perhaps this experience coloured my assessment of their demographic.

Whilst Palestinian propagandists like to lie about their “rich connection with the land”, Palestinian is the name given in 1967 to various Arabs, comprising Egyptians, Jordanians and so forth who were in the area. Prior to 1967 the term was of course unheard of.

Kind of.  The word “Palestinian” is quite old - what is new is the meaning. It now specifially refers to Arab people.

Before the 1960s, it was simply a geographic description like “New South Wales” or “West Virginia”.  It had no ethnic connotations at all.  For example, the title “Palestinian Jew” was often used in the past, whereas today to people who haven’t read history this would sound absurd.

There are some great examples around that really show how successful this modern propaganda has been.

    - For example, “The Jerusalem Post” which has been a Jewish newspaper since its inception was known as “The Palestine Post” before 1948.  At the time, nobody saw any contradiction in this.

    - The PLO’s first published charter in 1964 referred to themselves as “Palestinian Arabs” which, if nothing else, is at least an honest term.  If they had simply referred to themselves as “Palestinians” people would have been very confused at the time.

    - I once saw an essay which examined the use of the word “Palestinian” in European media in the pre-Israel era, and showed photoscans of articles from the late 19th century and early 20th century. The collection of articles were on subjects like ‘Palestinian artists tours England’,  Universities showing exhibitions of Palestinian culture or artefacts, etc, etc (you get the idea).

Now what was really striking was that in 9 out of 10 articles referenced, the “Palestinian” referred to was Jewish.  (I presume this was because mid-east Jewish communities had strong cultural and commercial links with their kin in Europe, and were thus more likely to visit and interact there.)

This merely re-enforces the fact that the term was 100% geographic description and 0% ethnic description at that time.

And the best example of all…..

“The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct ‘Palestinian people’ to oppose Zionism.

“For tactical reasons, Jordan, which is a sovereign state with defined borders, cannot raise claims to Haifa and Jaffa. While as a Palestinian, I can undoubtedly demand Haifa, Jaffa, Beer-Sheva and Jerusalem. However, the moment we reclaim our right to all of Palestine, we will not wait even a minute to unite Palestine and Jordan.”

    - PLO executive committee member Zahir Muhsein, in a 1977 interview with the Dutch newspaper “Trouw”.

  60. Bedouin

Any member of a community of Arabic-speaking desert nomads of the Middle East.

Ethnically, the Bedouin are identical to other Arabs. Bedouin traditionally have made their living by animal husbandry, and social rank among them is determined by the animals that they herd: camel nomads enjoy the greatest status, followed by sheep and goat herders and, finally, cattle nomads. Traditionally, Bedouin would migrate into the desert during the rainy season and return to cultivated areas during the dry season, but since World War II (1939–45) the governments of many countries have nationalized their range lands, and conflicts over land use have arisen. Many Bedouin have since adopted sedentary ways of life; most, however, retain pride in their nomadic heritage.
