OUT OF TRUTH

Following his site’s claim that Karl Rove had been charged with perjury, TruthOut.org executive director Marc Ash provides a variation on the tired old “fake but true” defence:

The time has now come, however, to issue a partial apology to our readership for this story. While we paid very careful attention to the sourcing on this story, we erred in getting too far out in front of the news-cycle. In moving as quickly as we did, we caused more confusion than clarity. And that was a disservice to our readership and we regret it.

As such, we will be taking the wait-and-see approach for the time being.

Ahead of the news cycle but true; nice. Incidentally, that “wait-and-see approach”? It’s a fairly useful news-gathering method. Just a tip.

  1. The Seventh Day Adventists didn’t wait this long for the Rapture…

  3. “we erred in getting too far out in front of the news-cycle”

I like it and will use a modified version.

If I decide to knock off work early and go home, when busted, I’ll just say “I erred in getting too far out in front of the work-cycle”.

    Cool

  4. Shame JWH didn’t adopt a wait’n'see approach to that Iran clothing ID story.

  5. I really don’t consider this a disservice to their readers anyway.

Their site should probably change the name to:
    Wishfulthinking.nut
    Whatwearehopingfor.nut
    Ourperfektstorm.looney

  6. So reporting things that haven’t actually happened is ‘getting ahead of the news cycle.’  That’s not what the nuns used to call it in second grade….

  7. The time has now come, however, to issue a partial apology to our readership for this story. While we paid very careful attention to the sourcing on this story were salivating like rabid dogs over this juicy long-hoped-for bit, we erred in getting too far out in front of the news-cycle. In moving as quickly as we did, we caused more confusion than clarity revealed ourselves as lefty moonbat nutballs who continually wet themselves over any and all chunks of gossip about the Rovehitlerbushyburton regime. And that was a disservice to our readership [which we will continue to perform] and we regret it that it isn’t true.

As such, we will be taking the wait-and-see approach for the time being [while we hope the rest of the world doesn’t notice what losers we are].

  8. Hmmm.

    Just in the news:

“Karl Rove dies of old age!”

    ...

Though perhaps I am a bit “too far out in front of the news-cycle”.

  9. The statement “we erred in getting too far out in front of the news-cycle” is another lie, just compounding one on another.  I suppose Pinocchio isn’t a story known by TruthOut.org

freshoutoftruth.org would work, too. I’ve always suspected that’s what “truthout” stands for, anyway.

  11. #1; the SDA’s don’t believe in the Rapture, for that matter.

  12. Well, give them a break.  Jason Leopold’s only been wrong in his prediction of Rove getting indicted, what, about 15 times?  It’s not like you can expect him to get it right every time, can you?

  17. I saw the story on Memeorandum, and thought, this will really go boom, but all I heard was crickets in the night.

    But WHAT A GREAT SCOOP!

I wonder what his “reliable source” is thinking. Maybe he/she just got sick of being hit on for leaks and handed him what he/she knew he wanted to hear.  Nothing says “Leave me alone!” like setting you up for a public pratfall.

  18. “Got ahead of the news cycle.” is equivalent to Richard Nixon Press Secretary Ron Nessen’s response “That statement is inoperative.” is equivalent to “I lied.”

  19. rhhardin — I believe that would have be “After Rove will have been indicted…”

The usage may have fallen out of favor, but Wellington used it in several of his written orders, and he was known for the clarity and precision of his instructions.

  21. In other news today, president Jeb Bush ordered several people arrested under the “Accessory to terrorism” law, passed in his first month in office. Warrants were issued for several newspaper editors, and bloggers.
Pres. Bush said they would be held in the psychiatric wing of Walter Reed Hospital untill the new Camp for the terminally Leftist is completed, in West Texas.

Oh! Never mind! I was just getting a bit ahead of myself.
