OLD EUROPE HATES NEW CURRENCY

Italy:

The euro suddenly spiked lower on Friday after an Italian minister said that Italy should quit the single currency and revert back to the lira.

Germany:

In the wake of the Dutch and French votes against the European constitution, the Germans have decided they want to scrap the euro and bring back their mark.

France:

In the first rumblings of a call for the franc to be reinstated ...

EU UPDATE, from Mark Steyn:

Ah, say the Eurofetishists, but you naysayers are gloating undeservedly: the French didn’t suddenly see the light and decide British Eurosceptics had been right all along; they rejected the EU constitution because they thought it was an Anglo-Saxon racket to impose capitalism on their pampered protectionist utopia.

But so what? Britain’s naysayers don’t have to reject the constitution for the same reason as France’s commies, fascists, racists, eco-nutters, anachronistic unionists, featherbedded farmers, middle-aged “students”, Trot professors and welfare queens, bless ‘em all. If they want to go down the Eurinal of history clinging to their unaffordable welfare state, their 30-hour work weeks, 10-month work years and seven-year work decades, that’s up to them. If Britain doesn’t, that should be up to Britain.

  1. Hardly surprising, and let’s have a close look at the early 1930’s and some of the political rhetoric then, and what is being reported now.

  4. Reminds of a comment made decades ago by an Hungarian Economist (Communist) - paraphrasing him, “The prolem we economists have is convincing billions of humans that gold is not a good money basis”.

Of course the problem with gold is that you can’t print it. Euros one can.

  5. I hope theb Euro doesnt go under. Its much more convenient to have a single currency on such a small continent with so many small countries. The EU is a bit of a joke, but the Euro was a great idea.

    This will probably blow over.

The entire European supranational experiment will be undone by the end of the year, at this rate.

  11. I’ve never liked the Euro myself, not having control over your own currency just seems flawed (unless you have a universal currency the world over, removing it from the equation entirely).

  12. Aging Gamer: If you give up your soverignty as the EU proposes, then you don’t have control anyway. The Euro does make it simpler to travel around Europe, but I’ve never understood how they were going to get all of those countries to succumb to French and German rule.

  13. Bring back the guilder! The only way this will get traction if France or Germany drops it. I don’t see any other country having the guts to do it without the others making their lives miserable for it.

  20. Hmmm.

You know this is the time to buy Euros.

Their price is dropping like a rock, people are starting to dump them and the probable exchange rate, once it goes completely under, will very likely be the same one used to create the Euro in the first place.

i.e. using economic data that’s a few years old when Europe had a better economy.

Well yeah, it’s really a situation of all or nothing. Staying at the halfway point doesn’t help anyone.

And I expect they thought Europe would be begging to have them as their glorious leaders.

  23. Very clever..

    Telegraph

In an article about the problems of the euro, the German magazine Stern advised readers to check their euro banknotes. The notes issued in Germany, it explained, begin their serial numbers with “X”; those issued in Italy begin with “S”. Hold on to the former, was the suggestion, and get rid of the latter while you can.

I wouldn’t worry about it Nic, you can use US dollars in most countries - a kind of universal currency really.

No more Euro - I lost count of the number of lefties gloating over the US Dollar’s slide against the Euro.

The end of the US as an economic super power they cried - even terrorists in Iraq swapped over to Euros ...

Bad luck chums, shoulda stayed with `bucks’!

  27. but they aren’t bagging the euro for nationalistic reasons - just like the no vote on the constitution really, where they want to retain all the boondoggles, they want their old currencies back so they can print more & make people feel a bit better before hyperinflation swallows their economies whole - but whatever sticks a spoke in the wheel of the eurohandcart is good
