OFFICIAL STATE NEWSPAPER

Not many Victorians buy The Age. But soon they’ll all be funding it:

Monday will see the launch of a new section in The Age: Creative Media, we think. The section, the brainchild of editor Andrew Jaspan, has been on and off so many times we wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t come out. But the idea is to cover media, advertising and the arts and to promote Melbourne as a centre of creativity. It grew out of a dinner last year held by the Committee for Melbourne, and is supported by advertising from the Victorian Government.

Various ethical issues are raised by this. Let’s see The Age’s Media Blog fearlessly address them.

  1. Oh good we get the ABC in writing now.

  2. It grew out of a dinner last year ...Yeah! I’ve been to dinners like that. Lots of things seem like a good idea at the time, fuelled by a few Cabernets.
The Arty Left Collective is already subsidised far beyong its worth, and, like the oil revenue going to the Middle East (and elsewhere), it ends up funding political activity which will be destructive to them and the rest of us.

  3. This happens a lot in France, where the media speaks (even if not in total support of the government of the day) as one voice when it comes to propaganda for the virtues of the French “social model”. The major advertiser in newspapers, magazines, etc. seems to be the government; just look at any issue of ‘Le Point” for example. It is a perversion of MSM and it has led to the MSM being weaker and more despised than AngloSaxon countries.

  4. Readers can be more tolerant than, say, Media Watch, of sections so dependent on a sector’s advertising that the editorial content is feel-good puff—when they want something, like to buy a house, or find an IT job. I don’t know how many people will need to read that Melbourne is great every week.

  5. Wow public newspapers now- one media programme that will never cover it is the media programme on radio national which invariably shuns anything controversial.Unless of course it favours the left.
    O/T
Glenn Milne takes a nasty stab at Mark Vaille’s wife before Vaille even has time to begin his new term.
Then the Outsiders describe him as the accidental politician because of his “dream” run.
He must be doing a good job then.

  6. Aren’t a few Canadians in trouble for a scheme like this?

  7. Are we surprised when the majority of what is printed in ‘The Aged’ is just reconstructed press missives from Bracks’ government lackeys all designed to spread a thin veneer of gossamer over the steaming piles of tish lurking beneath?

  8. I have the offending “section”. 4 pages long.

Page one: advertisement for the Ford Territory paid for by the wonderful taxpayers of the Gulag Victoria.

Page three: advertisement for the Simplot Australia paid for by the wonderful taxpayers of the Gulag Victoria.

With the current crisis in state funded medical care Im pleased that precious tax dollars are used by the labor party to help out their mates at the Age.

  9. the constant ads on 3AW, the features & ads in the Age are only the start - wait till they really start spending (& yes the plans are in the pipeline)

  10. I dont think the Media Blog comment was fair, Tim. It’s possible that Hugh would face reprimand for going against newspaper policy, seeing as he is employed by the same newspaper. Saying anything in public, especially on a blog attached to the age website, would not only be dangerous for him, but I think inappropriate.

Now if you had said Media Watch…

  11. Nic,

Heaven forbid that a newspaper would stoop to such fore-lock tugging hypocrisy by crticising itself.

If this was a Murdoch initiative the gloves would be off.  Even Robert Manne would find something to bitch about it…and I couldn’t wait to see Leunig-atic’s pictorial take on such overt cronyism.

    Coffee’s hot…have a sniff.

  12. Oh dont be so precious, this is not a Murdoch/Fairfax thing. Staff of a newspaper simply arent about to criticise their paper on the record. Its the job of others, i.e. Media Watch.

Tim’s swipe at Media Blog was unfair, unnecessary and aimed purely at scoring points.
