OFFER MADE

From a review of Jack Coughlin’s Shooter: The Autobiography of the Top-Ranked Marine Sniper, this description of events following Baghdad’s liberation:

The only sour note of the day came from the so-called “human shields,” leftists who had gone to Iraq supposedly to protect the people from the U.S. military and leave them safe in the arms of Saddam Hussein’s secret police. They stormed out of their shelters and began cursing the Marines as “baby killers.”

A group of “surly” Iraqi men approached Coughlin and offered to beat the liberal protesters to death for their insults.

The use of “offered” calls to mind an image of exquisite politeness: “Excuse me, sir, but I couldn’t help but overhear those unruly people accusing you and your fellows of infanticide. Would it be entirely out of order if we were to redress matters by, say, beating them to death? Please, no need to answer directly; we merely ask that you consider our offer. Do continue.”

  1. Obviously these men were CIA plants inserted into Iraq years ago who were ordered to wait just for a moment like this.

Karl Rove is probably the one behind it. Real Iraqis would _never_ act like that! What with them all hating Americans and such.

They were trying to get out the graveyard vote like good little Democrats but that bastard Saddam wouldn’t tell them where all the graves were and they got lost in the desert…

  11. I really, really wish GySgt. Coughlin had taken those surly Iraqis up on their offer.  Maybe not to the death, but at least a beat-down good enough to send all those “human shields” yipping home to mommy.

  12. Did anyone have the stomach to watch ‘Human Shield’ and future Jenny Craig spokesperson Donna Mulhearn on ABC’s ‘Australian Story’ last night?  I’m afraid I didn’t.

  13. Mrs Entropy did, I stayed in the study and sort of listened through the door.

She sure is a wacko of the first order.

Interestingly enough, when Baghdad was liberated, she claimed that she was shot at by a US sniper.

  15. “Curiously enough, somehow the sniper missed.”

More likely, the bullet entered through her big open mouth, richocheted around her empty cranium for a moment and then exited back out.

    She may not have noticed.

Unfortunately she also had an abc size audience, some of whom probably switched off.

  18. It’s funny that, for all her study of ‘spiritualities’, Buddhism, Christian meditation, auras, etc., she’s capable of snobby putdowns of people who play poker machines as some kind of subhumans.  Perhaps they were Liberal voters in their previous incarnation, and are now being punished?

  19. She also made clear that her life’s ambition from an ealry age is to be a member of parliament.  Leaving aside the scariness of that thought, now that she is filled her resume with the appropriate credentials and has been refereed (or blessed) by dear old Aunty, all she needs to do now is officially join the Greens and seek a senate spot in Tasmania.

    You have all been warned.

  20. Hey, I’m in favour of the Greens and the ALP sending as many loons into the Senate as possible, as long as both parties remain limited to less than 38 seats. That way, we get more entertainment for free, and they can’t do any harm.

  21. They tried to say that she was a real true blue conservative christian too - credibility started to fade a bit though when (a) she got into meditation with Buddhists (meditation and inter-faith cuddlies are not really cheered on by conservative christians), and (b) got a job with the ALP, who are not really up-front & positive about religion now that the Catholic vote is less important (also something to do with Leninism I think!).
The lasting impression is one of a confused and attention seeking person. Her search for a proper notion of self-worth may lead her back onto the tracks at some point, but at the moment I would have to agree with her mum - that she should just stay home.
