O.C. & STIGGS

Tod Carroll and Ted Mann’s Utterly Monstrous, Mind-Roasting Summer of O. C. and Stiggs was published by National Lampoon in 1982. It’s a nihilist-comic riot I first read at 17; recommended to anyone suffering post-Christmas family trauma. Sample quote: “Most people in nice neighborhoods don’t expect their pool cabanas to be in danger from helicopter gunships, which was why Sponson’s tactic of using it was so great.”

  1. Tim ... you must’ve had a traumatic Christmas Day to console yourself with OC and Stiggs ... I prefer the company of Zippy the Pinhead in times of need ... are we having fun yet?

  2. My gosh, a blast from the past! OC and Stiggs rarely come to mind these days although Howard Sponson regularly does, particularly when reading the NY Times.

  3. That was one of the two items I read growing up that goaded me toward a career in writing.

Just re-read it a few months ago.  Still funny half a lifetime later.

Their preceding “1982 Gash Report” had me hurting with laughter.

  5. I believe it was an OC/Stiggs story where I saw in print for the first time the words, “projectile vomit”.

I still remember where I was; it was that memorable.

  6. I was so impressed by OC & Stiggs I bought my own “Totally Approved by Absolute Autocratic Command of Craig Mc While Drunk” stamp.  I’ve still got these issues somewhere.  That was one funny magazine when the greats were writing for it.  Thanks for the link.

Off topic, I also got a “Find Him And Kill Him” stamp as seen in “Top Secret”.  That saw a lot of action in the 80s.

  7. Thanks Tim,
Twenty five years ago I was snickering at a snarky magazine and my mother asked me what was so funny… and I couldn’t explain how hilarious sociopathic behavior was.

This afternoon I was snickering at a snarky website and my mother again asked what was so funny.  I still couldn’t explain.

“Do you think she’ll let you pork her?” he asked, having noticed our conversation. I didn’t answer, though, because of my overwhelming and fanatical respect for Michelle, who I was now totally committed to porking, if not hanging around with for an unusually long period of time.

  8. Ah, National Lampoon!  I was introduced to that illustrious magazine as a high school senior, and read it all through college.  Alas, it went downhill, but the OC & Stiggs adventures were always classic readings…...
