NYT GUY “NEVER UNDERSTOOD”
Glenn Garvin reviews the career of New York Times foreign correspondent Herbert Matthews, “the first American reporter to interview Fidel Castro and the last to recognize the man as a ruthless and slightly mad totalitarian murderer. He created, fell in love with, and ultimately was devoured by Castro’s mythology without ever really understanding what was happening.”

We need an award for NYT reporters, call it the “Duranty” for reporters who get all tight in the britches over tyrants.

I always kind of liked this portrait of “Che” the best.
Too bad we don’t have a photo of him executing a troublemaker at his garden wall, although I am sure the Fidel has a few of those around. I hear the tomatoes from that garden grew especially red and delicious.
